Hackberry emperor butterflies love our Monarda blooms. And they also love Miguel. 🦋❤️😂
Back in February, we ended up with some very rootbound dill starts that had been sitting in pots too long. We had started a bunch extra in case ours froze over the winter, but they didn’t this year. So we decided to tuck the plants into a newer garden area to let them be seeds and food for pollinators. And with the help of friends, it made the project so much more fun. ❤️
Together, we pulled up the grass, worked in compost, and planted a couple loquats. Then we added the dill plants, tossed in some seeds of cosmos and zinnias, and we’ve been tucking in other plants along the way. The moringas and curry trees are starting to leaf back out now, the dill plants are full of swallowtail caterpillars, and it’s a bustling little ecosystem over here! It’s beautiful and chaotic and it’s food, medicine, habitat, and community all rolled into one.
We’re so grateful to have people’s hands in our soil and whenever we look at this garden, we think of all the love.

Here’s some dill in our garden that we overwintered by protecting it with mason jars during the freeze. It’s now a gorgeous swallowtail butterfly host plant and it will soon make lots of seeds.
A couple folks came by our market booth yesterday to get dill or fennel plants specifically for swallowtail butterfly habitat and they were so excited to find plants with a baby caterpillar already on them. One person said we should charge extra for that. 😂❤️🐛We’re so glad y’all are excited about making gardens that also serve as wildlife habitats.
Some host plants for swallowtail butterfly caterpillars are dill, fennel, parsley, and rue. And you can plant blooming plants nearby for them once they’re butterflies and you’ll have a happy little ecosystem. 🦋 Some of our favorite summer bloomers are cosmos, zinnias, tithonia, and perennial basil. We have many of these plants available right now. And rue is almost ready. A couple of y’all have asked for that one.

We had a fairy in our garden this evening. ❤️✨These are hawk moths / sphinx months. They’re what tomato hornworms turn into and they’re magical, y’all! We always get excited to see them.
Gardeners are always hating on hornworms but we invite you to shift your perspective. There are ways to coexist. If one’s munching your tomato, you can inspect your plants and relocate them to other nightshades in your yard that can handle the hornworms munching on them. When we first moved in, our front yard was pretty much all bermuda grass. And little by little, we’ve been replacing it with a diversity of food/medicine/habitat plants that cover the ground instead. Here’s a little peek at some of the plants lining one side of the walkway.
