Community is everything and we are so grateful to our growing group of plant friends who want to spend time with us and get their hands in soil. We had such a nice day yesterday hanging out and knocking out a bunch of garden tasks together.

We’ll see you at the San Marcos TX Farmers Market on Saturday!

We’re at the market every week from 9AM-1PM, happy to share different pathways for connecting with the plants.

We’ll be bringing:
🌱A great selection of culinary and medicinal plants, many in one-gallon pots. Lemon Verbena | Hoja Santa | Tulsi/Holy Basil | Turmeric | Wild Magic basil | Cuban Oregano | Curry Trees and more.
🍅Fall tomato plants. A variety we’re trying called Desi Girl. It’s a South Asian determinate tomato variety that we hear is prolific and only grows 2-3 feet tall. We have a limited number, so get em while we got em.
🫖Our thoughtfully crafted herbal tea blends, all of which feature herbs from our garden. Long Hot Summer | Lemongrass Chai | High Smileage I Cuddle Puddle | Despair Repair | Happy Tumease and more
✨Fairy Dust, a fun mix of homegrown edible flowers to sprinkle onto cakes, salads, and all the things!
🌶️Curry Up powder, featuring homegrown coriander, curry leaves, and cayenne. It’s a go-to in our household and many of our customers say the same.
🌸All Is Well Oxymel. An apple cider vinegar extract with monarda, fennel, yarrow, and honey. This is a tasty blend that supports digestion and seasonal wellness. Take by the spoonful or use in salad dressings, marinades, mocktails.
🪄Our summer batch of herb bundles made with mugwort and other seasonal plants in our garden
🧢Homemade granola, cool hats, and more!
👩‍🌾Free seeds, as always.

Update: It’s a brown-headed cowbird and they’re brood parasites. The mom plopped an egg into the nest so the wren parents would care for it. Thanks to all those who helped us ID. Bird dynamics are wild.

—-
Bird people! Can you help us ID the bird in the first photo? Is it a mockingbird baby? Or someone said cowbird? We want to solve this mystery.

A wren couple made this nest in our Greenstalk planter. One day we noticed 1 egg. Then maybe a few days later, 5 more. This planter is right out our back door so we see it often. We’ve been watching the babies grow and seeing a wren couple care for all the hatchlings. But this one baby seemed to dominate the nest. He grew faster than the others, eventually perching on the edge of the planter, and we assume flew off. Now that this bird has flown the coop, we can clearly see that the other babies look and act very differently than that one. And they still have a bit to go before they’re ready to fly. So who was the imposter bird and how did he get there? 🤔🧐🪺

We hosted students of Wildflower School of Botanical Medicine back in May and it’s fun to see all the gardens we planted exploding with blooms now.

🌱A little garden bed near our back door that had a curry tree, chaya tree, oregano, and lemon balm. We planted basil seedlings and cosmos seeds and everything is flourishing.
🌱A little space along a fence in our front yard garden. We planted tithonia, gomphrena, squash, amaranth, pineapple sage, jewels of opar, long bean seeds, perennial basils, and a lot more.
🌱Our side yard hedge that is full of plants and seeds tucked in by three classes of students. It’s full of bees and butterflies and we LOVE looking at this space and thinking of all the hands that were in our soil helping to create this beautiful chaos.

Gardening makes everything better.

We came across some old photos from when we first moved here and it was a nice reminder of how far we’ve come.

Our 100-year-old house needed all the things but since we’re gardeners, we started there. 🙂🌱We arrived with a hodge podge of plants from our old place and tucked many of them into the ground near the house where we could tend to them more easily.

And then we couldn’t stop. We started replacing the lawn with a garden ecosystem bit by bit. The garden expanded and expanded, slowly and organically. And with each growing season, we got a chance to observe the elements that affect our space, learn what works and what doesn’t, make changes as needed, and tuck little plants in wherever they fit.

We’re now about five years in. We got a new roof in preparation for rainwater harvesting, a catio, a fence to protect our garden from armadillos and deer, and some arch trellises to grow more food and a shadier microclimate below. The volunteer redbuds have filled in beautifully to offer dappled shade and abundant edible blooms, we have a bird bath that’s bustling year-round with a variety of bird friends (our primary pest control patrol), and our garden is full of pollinator-attracting plants that self-seed every year.

Here’s what our garden evolution has looked like for us.

Well, this escalated quickly! In a good way.
🦋✨🌸

When we first moved here, this area was just a dead tree stump surrounded by grass. We routed our greywater to it, planted a tiny piece of coral vine that quickly shot up into a gorgeous mess of flowers and bees, and have been adding other plants and seeds as they come into our lives.

This year the dead tree finally got fell down in the wind and now it’ll become a fabulous habitat and food for the soil. We got up some arch trellises to take its place and the coral vine monster continues to grow and grow. It’ll be exciting to see how this space continues to evolve. We’re liking what we see so far 🙂

One thing we love about gardening is that we can try all kinds of interesting foods that would be hard to find otherwise. We like choosing plants that are low maintenance, productive, and do well in heat and humidity. Some of the fun varieties in our garden this year are snake gourd, thai kang kob pumpkin, cucamelon, tindora, job’s tears, and lemon cucumber.

Thank you SO much for all the well wishes and support, y’all. The love has been overwhelming. ❤️

We’re sorting ourselves out this week and will be back at the San Marcos TX Farmers Market this weekend. Downtown in the square by the county courthouse, Saturday 9-1.

If you’re someone who worries about planting things bc you’re scared of killing the plant, try mullein. These plants got thrown across our yard by 60 mph winds and are doing great despite it all. They’re hardy dudes and they have stories to tell. 🙃

In the meantime, we’ll be over here sorting ourselves out. We’re sure a lot of y’all are doing the same. That was a wild storm. 😳

05/09/2024

Our little barn swallow babies have flown the coop and yesterday evening we got to see them all on the line hanging out with the crazy sun.

Every year during the warm season, our front porch is occupied by barn swallows. As soon as one brood flies off, the parents get to work making another one.

Did you know?
🌱A single barn swallow eats about 60 insects an hour. Their diet includes mosquitoes, gnats, flies, wasps, flying termites, and all kinds of insects humans consider to be a nuisance.
🌱Barn swallows are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which prohibits disturbing the birds, their nests, or their eggs.
🌱 Near the end of the summer, barn swallows gather in large flocks to begin their winter migration to Central or South America. Then in the spring, swallow couples will typically return to the same nest to start the process again. We look forward to seeing our barn swallows return every year and when they arrive, that’s our sign that spring is here.
