Interesting I never knew this. Now I feel differently about them.
“My friend grew up in New England where they have pigeons. Apparently they also hate them. He was always saying bad things about pigeons until I pointed something out that he never thought of before.”
“We domesticated pigeons. They are (nearly) all over the world because HUMANS BROUGHT THEM THERE. And, they were more than pets. They carried messages. People raced them. They lived spoiled lives as honored human companions for centuries.
Then we got telephones and we threw them out like trash.
Literally, we threw them away.
Their species had already been fully domesticated and they could not survive in the wild; they lost all their survival instincts during the centuries that they lived caged by people.
That is why they live in cities with people instead of in a forest somewhere. It’s OUR fault. And not only did we throw them away, but now humans curse them as “winged rats;” casting them as pests.
But they don’t know how to live without us, and their instincts tell us that they should trust us. So, they continue to come up to humans and beg for food, because it’s the only survival skill left in their genes.
They love us because they were bred by us to feel that way, and yet we hate them.”

Meet Hobo. Hobo was eating bugs in a person's lawn, so they decided to call an exterminator. Pesticide was sprayed on the lawn and under the house. Six weeks later he was brought to us emaciated, lacking aggression and covered in ant bites. A few days of a nutritious diet, meds, and hydration has him up on his feet. Sadly it looks as though our smelly friend has some lasting neurological damage from the chemicals sprayed, and cannot walk or run without falling over. He can no longer hunt for food and would die if released. Skunks, birds, armadillo, possum and many others are at the mercy of those who spray toxic chemicals to kill bugs. When contemplating pest control, please think of Hobo and his friends that will die alongside those grubs and grasshoppers.

Poor mama opossum with 7 babies in her pouch. She was harmed by humans for the 'crime' of eating the cat food that they left out. She is thin and was having a hard time managing in the wild until she found the food. And was then punished for trying to survive.
She is now on antibiotics for her injuries (looks like she was shot) And we are giving her all the food she wants in a form that the babies can also eat at this stage. So they can eat freely also, without draining all the nutrition from this poor, skinny mama.
BTW, she is most grateful for the help and has allowed me to feel all over her body for injuries, etc. She is able to stand and move around, but is feeling bad due to the infection and her low body weight. Her cooperation lets me know how happy she is to be somewhere safe where the food will keep coming with no negative repercussions.
If you do NOT want lyme disease, then be kind to your backyard opossums who eats thousands of ticks each year, removing the major source of transmission of that disease. They also remove dead things that can also spread illness to humans and other animals. Just leave them alone and let them do their job.
And if you don't want them eating your cat/dog food, then don't leave it out. Just set it out at set times for your pets to eat and then take it up. You pets will figure out the schedule and no wildlife will be harmed, simply because they didn't understand that they shouldn't eat the tasty food that you offered.

Great news! After a long hiatus, Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control is again able to offer FREE spay and neuter surgeries once a month for the pets of low-to-moderate-income county residents. Some slots for female dogs and for cats of both sexes still are available for surgeries on March 18, the first such day. This is NOT a walk-in service; applications must be approved beforehand. Please visit the shelter to fill out an application.

Parsley really is a sweet cat! No one can deny that! He's pretty photogenic, too. As long as he thinks he'll get pets and attention out of it. His entire world revolves around pets and attention. He's an easy cat to please and make happy. He's so loving and affectionate. 💖

Here, we have Parsley (front tabby, male) and Athena (back calico, female). Athena was enjoying a nice nap until the photos started getting taken and interrupted her. 😂 Parsley, on the other hand, just wasn't too thrilled that he wasn't getting pets. Photographs and attention, but no pets, does not fly with him in the least! 😂

Introducing the beautiful and sleek, Princess Pixie! 🐈⬛ She is the bell of the ball. There is no denying her status in any household. She is such a high-class and sofisticated cat, and she makes sure you know it. 😆 She's a sweetheart, though! Not so much a tolerant or patient one when it comes to kittens or playful mates. She prefers her peace. Having her space brings her happiness and makes her content. 💜 That said, she has no qualms living in a home with housemates just as long as she has some spaces to call her own.💜
This bundle of love, clinginess, and attention is Estella! He is a boy. lol As a wiggleworm baby, however, he would NOT let anyone get a clear view EVER. Little man would not sit still. It's like he knew what you were doing and NOPE. He wanted it to be a surprise. 🤣 So we took a guess in the dark, and it was wrong. He likes the name, though, and responds to it happily. Maybe that was his goal all along. 😉 He's the biggest bundle of love yo everyone - human and animal alike. ❤️ If he could be with you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, he absolutely would. Nothing in the world could or would make him happier than being with his person and just loving and being loved unconditionally! He was rescued along with his 2 brothers from under a porch. Their mother hadn't been around in a few days at that point, so that was when one of our locations was called. It was a 2 state drive to pick up these little guys were 4 weeks at the time, and they were healthy, minus a horrible flea infestation. We got that handled quickly, though. They were scared out first until they realized they were in for a life of love, luxury, and an extended family until their forever home could be found! 💙 They've been happy, playful, bundles of joy since! Their foster & sinblings are happy to have them!
Excuse the mess in the background! We couldn't resist sharing this moment with you all. Taking a break from packing, moving, reorganizing, and some serious cleaning (due to a busted pipe and some flooding), we all had to give this little guy some much needed attention! Mr. Bean (who has obtained the nickname "Little Dude") is doing much better and really regaining his strength. We're all so happy about this! He has really become a playful fella! Very demanding, too! 😂 All his family members at the Sanctuary look out and watch over him. his sisters have joined him as well! Also, at the time of posting this video up, the pipe has been fixed, and the flood mess cleaned up! Thank goodness! 🙏🏻 That was not fun! The cats, on the other hand, had a ball splashing water everywhere and leaving paw prints all over the Sanctuary. They thought this was very helpful.😂
This little love bug gave us all a real scare. Fading kitten syndrome is a very real thing and it's often times fatal and unpreventable. Mr. Bean here was gaining weight, eating well, all positive signs until out of the blue, he was lethargic, weak, didn't want to eat, nurse, or anything. A trip to the vet showed he had no underlying issues that we could treat. No infections, parasites, illness, etc. His sugar was low and he was slightly dehydrated despite our attempts to help him nurse. We were prepared to lose him. So one of our ladies took him in. He took to her right away. She carried him around with her. Let him sleep with her. She helped get him to drink pedialite and mixed that with soft kitten food. Somehow this little guy thrived with her! Though it was touch and go for the span of a week. Every day we all expected to hear of his passing but each day, he was there. We all were so thankful! Then one day, to her and our surprise, she said he was playing and active again! He's a little miracle. To go from such a frail state to a lively, healthy, rambunctious boy. We're so happy! He's still safely and happily with his loving Sanctuary mommy who adores him. 💙
THIS is why we all do choose to do this. Tillie, an adorable and loving kitty, had a stroke though the cause hasn’t been a mystery. Watching her go through recovery and watching how resilient she’s been is absolutely amazing.
One of our rescues, Pumpkin, out enjoying the beautiful weather! Some rescues were outside cats. To prevent depression & attempts to bolt out the door to be an outdoor cat again (some cats are NOT good for TNR). So we work with cats to retrain bad habits with leash training. This way they can still enjoy the outdoors and act on their instincts, while not getting into trouble - or worse. This type of training works best in young cats or kittens. Pumpkin was under a year when he entered one of our locations. He’s not a good TNR because he wants to come home. As a TNR, he would have no home & there are no safe areas near any of our rescue locations. The Mommy he’s with now has been working on the leash training actively since a second out the door bolt happened. He’s a very happy cat and sleeps with her every night. When he comes home, usually a few days later, he comes right to her. Her location happens to be right off 2 highways. The stress if him getting out can be frightening. She now has a GPS collar on him. Since leash training has started, he’s gotten much better! Bolting outside has become less of an issue! He’s been at her location for a year as of December 2023.
