Smokey has been quietly waiting for her chance at a forever home for the past 13 months. Smokey is a reserved soul who believes in keeping a low profile and following the rules. She’s not one to seek the spotlight, but with patience and understanding, she’ll reveal her true self: a kind, gentle companion who will win your heart in her own quiet way.

Smokey is looking for a peaceful home with a calm routine—an environment where she can finally relax and feel safe. A quiet couple or individual would be her ideal match, someone who values her peaceful nature and will give her the space she needs to blossom.

The employees at the Tiffin Ave Walmart have sponsored Smokey's adoption fee. If you are looking for a kind, gentle companion kitty, Smokey's your girl.

If you would like to know more or schedule a meet and greet, please call 419-423-1664.

The Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County has been actively involved in feral cat population management for a few years. Our independent TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) program was temporarily paused in mid-2024 when our dedicated veterinarian had to step away for a medical procedure. Since then, our current veterinarian has been working in as many feral cat surgeries as possible during regular surgery days, with the potential to add a dedicated feral-only surgery day in the coming months.

Because the Humane Society does not currently have a veterinarian available full-time for feral surgeries, the City of Findlay connected with VCA Findlay Animal Hospital to provide additional veterinary support for TNR efforts. This partnership ensures that more feral cats can receive spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and proper care.

Our primary responsibility in this collaboration includes:

• Providing location guidance to feral cat volunteers to ensure TNR efforts are focused where they are most needed.

• Ensuring feral cats are returned to their original outdoor homes after surgery.

• Responding to community questions about TNR and feral cats as inquiries come in.

It’s important to clarify that the $5,000 allocated by the City of Findlay is NOT going to the Humane Society. These funds are being used to cover the cost of supplies for surgery and vaccinations, ensuring that more feral cats can receive the care they need.

We appreciate the City’s commitment to addressing overpopulation and hope our community will be patient, as TNR is a long-term process. It takes years, not weeks or months, to see a significant impact. Studies show that sustained TNR programs can take 3-5 years to show population decline. Additionally, removing feral cats from an area does not eliminate the issue, as new cats will often move in.

Addressing Common Concerns
Feeding Feral Cats:

• We understand the compassion behind feeding feral cats. In our experience and training, we advocate the saying: “If you feed them, fix them.” While no one is obligated to fix feral cats, if you are providing food and making them dependent on human care, it is in the cats’ best interest to ensure they are spayed or neutered.

• Cruelty Toward Feral Cats: Unfortunately, some have suggested lethal methods such as sh00ting feral cats. This is not only cruel but also illegal. We urge the community to embrace humane solutions like TNR.

• Why Ear-Tipping?: Ear-tipping is a universal indicator that a feral cat has already been spayed or neutered. If a TNR volunteer traps a cat with an ear tip, it should be released immediately.

We have turned off comments on this post, as we do not have the capacity to monitor them at this time. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to us directly:

We appreciate our community’s ongoing support and patience. Every cat fixed is a step toward reducing overpopulation and ensuring a healthier feral cat community.

The Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County

n June 18, 1888, residents of Hancock County who were concerned with issues related to animal welfare and control, including education, incorporated the Humane Society of Hancock County. Throughout the next 70 to 80 years, due to the loosely structured and undocumented nature of animal care, there is little information readily available; so the work of the Society is a mystery, but remains an ongoing research project.

On September 20, 1969, Miss Ann Rieck, a lover of animals, leased her farm in Amanda Township to the Society to be used as a shelter. Volunteers made things habitable and constructed kennels. The first adoptions completed at the shelter were those animals found on the farm when the volunteers first arrived. The Humane Society was also reincorporated in 1969.

Early 1970’s highlights included:

  • The appointment of the first Humane Agent.
