Requiem for Cricket

Twenty-six years of Dog Rescue work has sharpened the lens through which I view Humanity. As I get older, I have less to say to folks who are apathetic toward dogs, and much to say about dogs to those who share my Canine bewitchment.

Within the “Dog World” there is a wide spectrum of Human Behavior. At one end of this spectrum is the rescuer, who will mortgage her house and max out every credit card to pay for a perinea hernia repair in a German Shepherd, (Let’s call him Sergio). At the spectrum's opposite end, is the "Dog Lover" who drags her “hated” and “untrainable” hunting dog (let’s call her Cricket) to a gravel pit and shoots her in the face, then describes the horror as a badge of honor in a self-serving memoir.

How do such wildly divergent Human values develop? Certainly a case can be made that our environment shapes our perspectives, but don’t underestimate the influence of a random encounter with Walt Disney.

I was six years old when my Mother, Berenice, unwittingly facilitated the trauma. In 1961, she took me to see Disney’s 101 Dalmatians at the Drive-In. Oh sure, the big screen animated feature had its fair share of giggles. Who couldn't love Pongo, Old Towser, The Colonel and the epic Sgt. Tibbs, who facilitated the “Twilight Bark?”

Reality skewered my heart when Cruella de Vil’s henchmen set out to shoot 101 Dalmatian puppies in their heads. That is alot for a six year old to process. As much as I love Disney, I cannot bring myself to watch the original or live action version of that classic film again.

A random moment in film history cemented my perspective, and I was determined to become one of the good guys in Dog World. As I look around our house and property, I see nearly 100 displaced souls. I know their stories and hold their trauma in my heart. Often I feel like that six year old kid crying into her popcorn.

Luck plays a pivotal role in a Dog’s life. The luckiest dogs are nurtured by good breeders and find their way into families in which they are treasured for the duration of their lives. Bum Luck dogs wind up in shelters or rescue groups with a 50/50 shot at a second chance for rebuilt lives.

No luck dogs end their short lives as victims of neglect and abuse, or worse, in a gravel pit gunned down by the Governor of South Dakota.

May her Engagement with Karma be swift.

RIP Cricket.

Senior boy, ROWDY, knows he isn’t exactly the cutest dog at the shelter… or the youngest… or even the cuddliest. He’s ok with that, but should it stop him from finding love? ROWDY is his own dog. He’s an Independent guy, but lately he can be heard crying softly in his kennel. He’s lonely. He’s been overlooked a long time.
ROWDY is a sweet curmudgeon who has managed to work his way into everyone’s heart! His name doesn’t fit him. He’s the opposite of rowdy. He’s Quiet & Tolerant. He can also be a bit bossy & opinionated (isn’t everyone some-times?), but he really doesn’t ask for much… a walk, a treat, a little attention. ROWDY is not needy or clingy, but he certainly doesn’t mind being loved up & talked to on his walks. He likes affection, but can be slow to show his emotions. Even so, he looks for me every day.

Surely, there’s a spot for him somewhere.
Isn’t there a lid for every pot?

Dogs-likes female dogs!

8-31-23 OH NO ADAM is Back at the shelter after 8 YEARS!

He is now a plea 1-5-24 He is a wonderful dog!!!!!

A1836704
His new ID

Rescue Request for Assistance
Adam was adopted from us in 2015 but was transferred back to us from another shelter in August. He is a sweet senior boy who loves the scent garden, slow walks, & leans in for lots of pets! If you’re looking for a low-key friendly, please give Adam a chance.
Medical attached. Notes below.

Intake Note: 08/31/23 16:48 At intake, he allowed all handling from staff. -TB Per HSTB records, tolerated handling handling with loose body posture. Unable to safetly do exam. On leash meeting, curious and whining to approach. Wanting to engage but not pushing to engage. Fine exploring yard.
Volunteer Note: 10/16/23: Adam (A1836704) was easy to leash and walk to the play yard by the volunteer in training. He did a quick tour of the yard; then came up for pets from both of us. He was quite happy spending his time there walking with us and going back and forth seeking affection. He was more inquisitive in the garden, sniffing along the fence, in the plants and around the obstacles, enjoying the “news of the day”. He still never strayed far, being sure to make frequent pet stops with us. When back in the play yard, I picked up a squeaky toy to try. He sniffed the hard one when tossed; then picked up a soft plush one. We played a few rounds of senior dog fetch, tossing it out a few feet for him to pick up. He walked close to the other volunteer and was easy to return to his kennel. He’s a very sweet, gentle senior dog who happily soaks up all the love and attention offered.
11/26/23Per volunteer: was very easy to leash and walk to the play yard. He leaned against me for pets before going off to explore. I tossed a couple toys that he picked up and carried briefly before coming back for another pet. He soon went to the garden gate, nudging it to go out. He perked up more to be out in the garden to sniff and explore the garden. He walked within a few feet as I walked the garden and would come up for pets when I sat on a rock. He did well on sit and wait. He is a loving, gentle senior who enjoys quietly sniffing and just being near someone.

12/26/23 Per Volunteer: Adam A1836704 was easy to leash. He was not jumping or barking and stood still. He was very low energy in the yard. He showed little interest in toys. He solicited and allowed pets all over, leaning on my leg and wagging his tail. He sat and took a treat gently but set it on the ground. He was easy to return to kennel.

***ADOPTED!!!*** 🙂

Ok Village, we need you!!!! Adam is a very special dog to the staff at the shelter and he needs a great home!!!! Adam, who we had posted before when he was transferred in to the shelter by the HSTB, found himself on the euth list due to space. He was scheduled to be euthanized and one of the staff members looked into his eyes and knew that Adam was not done on this earth and took him home that very day. Sadly, due to living situations she has been trying to rehome the 2 dogs she took in to foster from the shelter. Titan is another dog who we also will be posting. These dogs are as perfect as they can be. Good with other dogs, small dogs, children, housebroken, friendly, healthy, leash trained and loving. Adam is truly a lover, he likes sleeping in bed and giving kisses. Adam is listed as a 2 year old terrier mix. Please help us find Adam a home.

All the information we have about this dog is posted above. If we have not posted about it in the description, we DO NOT KNOW how the dog does with other dogs, cats, kids, or is house trained. Most of them come in without a resume. We do our best to find out as much as we can, but it can be difficult to assess in a shelter environment.

**** PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS! THANK YOU!!! ****
==========================
THIS ALBUM WAS CREATED BY AND IS MAINTAINED BY VOLUNTEERS. THIS PAGE IS NOT A PROJECT OF OR AFFILIATED WITH THE SHELTER OTHER THAN THEY DO SUPPORT OUR EFFORTS!!! PLEASE REMEMBER WE ALSO HAVE FULL TIME JOBS, FAMILIES, AND LIVES AND DO THE BEST WE CAN TO SAVE AS MANY LIVES AS POSSIBLE.

All the dogs in this album are located in Hillsborough County Animal Services in Tampa Fl. Every effort is made to keep the information as up to date as possible.

**** WE CHECK STATUS EVERY DAY ON EVERY DOG AND MAKE AN UPDATE WHEN STATUS CHANGES. Please note, most of us admins work days, as well as we only receive a report of status updates ONCE a day from the shelter – this is run and sent to us at 7pm when the shelter closes. THEREFORE WE DO NOT KNOW IF A DOGS STATUS HAS CHANGED UNTIL CLOSE EVERY DAY AT 7PM AND THAT IS WHEN WE DO DAILY STATUS UPDATES! If you need status during the day, call the shelter (make sure you ask the name of the person you are speaking to so if the information is incorrect, we know who gave it out).

*** ADOPT INFO: All dogs available for adoption are vetted and ready to go and expected to leave when you apply to adopt them. No holds will be placed on a dog. IF YOU WANT TO ADOPT, THEN GO TO THE SHELTER AND MEET THE DOG ASAP. IF THE DOG IS POSTED AS ON EUTH, THEN PLEASE EMAIL [email protected] and CC to [email protected] . Please include the name and ID number of the dog, your name, phone number, and when you will go to the shelter to adopt them (must be same day for euth listed dogs). PLEASE DON’T EMAIL THE SHELTER IF THE DOG IS NOT ON EUTH!!! Just go and meet them if they are not on the euth list.
All dogs must be adopted in person. If you are out of area and willing to drive in and meet the dog and put in an application, we may be able to help get the dog to you when ready to go. If you are out of state and want to adopt a dog, you will need to find a rescue to pull, arrange transport, the dog will need a vet issued health cert for travel, and, most likely, temp foster while all the arrangements are being made. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL THE SHELTER UNTIL YOU HAVE MADE THE ARRANGEMENTS AND HAVE SOMEONE TO PICK THE DOG UP!!!

*** FOSTER PROGRAM UPDATE 6/12/15 The following are the guidelines to foster at risk dogs through the Last Chance Foster. These are the guidelines we adapted from the last foster program and will post official guidelines once the program is finalized and made official):
Last Chance Fostering Program:
1. Approved Individuals are eligible to foster animals that have been at the shelter more than 30 days or are on the euthanasia list for time/space.
2. Last Chance foster will be limited to two months providing ample opportunities to find their foster a forever home.
3. They will commit to bringing in their animals to all First Saturday Adoption Events and 2 additional Saturday Adoption Days at the shelter.
4. All scheduled foster appointments will be attended.
5. At the end of the Two (2) month period the foster parent will be responsible for returning the animal to Pet Resources for euthanasia or adopting their animal.

If you are interested in fostering, please email [email protected] and CC to [email protected]. Dogs that are not eligible for foster can be “adopted to rehome”. These dogs are eligible to come to the HCAS adoption events.

*** RESCUE INFO: To place a rescue hold or to become an HCAS Rescue Partner, please email [email protected].

***PLEDGES: If you would like to pledge for a dog, just post a comment on the dogs thread how much you would like to pledge. We encourage people to only make pledges for HCAS approved rescues or to the HCAS foster program. Money should never be sent directly to adopters. It can be sent directly to their vet for dogs that have medical issues. Once a dog with pledges leaves the building to the approved rescue and we receive a link where pledges can be paid, we will post the link. We cannot be responsible for pledges being paid. It is up to rescues to collect their own pledges. Sadly, usually not 100% of pledges are actually realized. Rescues feel free to let us know if someone has not paid a pledge after being asked and we may ban them from the page. It would be helpful if pledgers would keep a list of dogs they have pledged for so they can check on the threads and pay their pledges once the dog leaves the building. PLEASE NOTE FB DOES NOT ALWAYS ALLOW US TO COMMENT TAG EVERYONE ON A THREAD TO ASK TO PAY THEIR PLEDGE. PLEASE DO NOT ASK US TO PM YOU TO REMIND YOU BECAUSE PMS USUALLY END UP IN THE ‘OTHERS’ FOLDER AND MOST PEOPLE NEVER SEE THEM. IT IS UP TO YOU TO KEEP TRACK OF AND PAY YOUR PLEDGES! Thank you!

*** INFO ON HW: Heartworms are not contagious and dogs can only get them by a mosquito bite. They can be treated with “fast kill” which takes about 2 months, is more expensive, and the dog will need to be kept quiet during the treatment. There is also “slow kill” which is cheaper, takes longer, the dog does not need to have normal activity restricted (extremely vigorous exercise probably should be delayed), takes usually 6-18 months. List of vets who will support slow kill: https://www.facebook.com/notes/tamar-barry/vets-in-tampast-pete-area-who-will-do-gentleslow-hw-treatment/282243061843020

Fb friends, please see the story on Miley.

Any donations towards her wheelchair would be highly appreciated and put towards good use. As you can see, this sweet girl is determined to get around and has a lot of life left in her ❤️

Meet Miley! 💗

This is a heartbreaking story, all.

This adorable 4-year-old girl joined Animalluvr's Dream Rescue yesterday after her owners surrendered her due to moving. The owners were asking around for anyone to take Miley in and were not successful due to her special/medical needs, so her euthanasia was scheduled for this morning. She was saved in the nick of time by Dog Angel, Ann Malone of Rescue Me Tampa - Shelter Dogs! 💔

She will need extensive medical care because you see, Miley has no use of her back legs. The sores you see in this photo are caused by her dragging her legs and urine burns. There is video in the comments, it is very difficult to watch.

The Pitbull Mafia of South Tampa has vowed to help Animallurvr's Rescue raise the necessary funds so that she may receive the medical attention and equipment she so badly needs. Can you help? Even $5 can make a huge impact.

Miss Smiley Miley will need medical diagnostics, such as MRIs to uncover WHY, a wheelchair, and therapy to start.

But she is sooooo worth it. Check out the second video posted (in the comments): Miss Miley with her new foster sissy being pulled in a wagon...all smiles!

PLEASE SHARE, WE NEED TO FIND OREO A HOME - Tampa, brandon, Riverview & Lithia, Fl (and surrounding areas)

I debated writing this but felt compelled to get it off my chest- Oreo was returned to us less than two days after his adoption 😔His adopters threw in the towel two hours after adopting him and threatened to leave him at the shelter if we were not able to receive him. Thankfully they kept him over the weekend and dropped him off first thing on Monday morning.

While Oreo and his “new sister” got along great outside, territorial issues started inside the house that the adopters were unprepared for, and basically unwilling to work on.

I understand the emotions of this as I have been in their exact predicament but, a commitment is a commitment. They felt the safety of their dog was the most important issue- and for that, we completely understand and of course welcome Oreo back with open arms.

While I am not here to bash anyone, I was pretty upset of the actions that transpired over the weekend. If taking care of a dog was all sunshine and rainbows, then everyone would have a dog and shelters wouldn’t exist. But that’s just not the reality of it.

We love Oreo and are prepared to find him the best home possible because that’s what he deserves; patience, love and understanding. Not threats of being abandoned at a kill shelter.

We got you Oreo!! Please share this boy in hopes of finding a dedicated family.

02/27/2021

Happy tails to our sweet Oreo!! Today this handsome boy went to his Furever home and we couldn’t be more happy for him.

Peyton and family had been looking to add another pup to their pack when they came across our post of Oreo. It was love at first sight not only for the family but for Oreo who has a sister to romp n play with along with a nice yard and sweet pool 😎

Thank you to the Yowell’s for taking a chance on this incredibly sweet boy. We can’t wait to see updated pictures!

Guess who got busted out of the shelter today?

Oreo 🤩

Welcome to the BBR family Oreo. Here’s to never living in a backyard again and wondering when your next meal will be.

Tomorrow Oreo will get vetted at Bloomingdale animal Hospital in preparation for his first meet n greet on Saturday.

Today we visited Oreo who is currently at the Pet Resource Center off Falkenburg. He takes treats so gently and is so so quiet 🤫

If you saw his previous living conditions, you’d be mortified. He deserves so much better than the life he has had.

Thank you for liking our page!

We are a grassroots rescue located in Lithia, FL. This rescue was started in honor of sweet Belle; A 7 year old Staffordshire who was rescued from living in a hot garage in horrific conditions. Some amazing volunteers from our local shelter got wind of this and did everything in their power to get her away from her previous owner. Time was ticking as Belle's previous owner did not want her any longer and was trying to get her put down.

Unfortunately, 3 months after her rescue, it was discovered Belle had a brain tumor. She left this earth knowing she was truly loved by her adoptive family as well as everyone who fought to get her out of that hell hole.

Our mission is to get the Belle's of the world OUT of similar conditions.
