Meet The Team ✨

Josie is originally from Ramer, Alabama, where she grew up competing in junior and high school rodeo with a special love for team roping. Her background in the rodeo world instilled in her a strong work ethic, a calm-under-pressure attitude, and a deep appreciation for animals. After graduating from Troy University with a degree in Business Science, Josie brought her mix of southern hospitality and sharp organizational skills to our team.

As our receptionist, she’s the friendly voice on the phone and the one making sure everything runs smoothly—keeping schedules organized, assisting clients, and helping us deliver top-notch care for every horse we see.

Feature Friday of Colton Cash Gilliard & Hank! ✨

“God’s blessed me with the ability to ride and be partners with some of His greatest creatures.

My young rope horse never presented as being lame. Never presented he had any issues but I could feel something just wasn’t quite right.

Blessed to have the hands down the best veterinarian in this game, Dr. Andrews.

She got Hank and me in asap and worked her magic. Our first rodeo after treatment and Hank the Tank was back and the photographer caught him doing what he does when he’s feeling his best. Win.

Thank you to Alabama Performance Horse Services and the entire family from Dr. Andrews, Mr. Rick, Shelby, Madison, Alex, Roscoe, Darla, Jasper, and Burrito.

Thank y’all for being so good to me and my horses. See y’all soon... but for maintenance purposes only.”

WARMER WEATHER = TICK SEASON! 📢

As the weather warms up, ticks are becoming more active — which clearly means more chances for your horses (or yourself and your family pets) to encounter this parasite. Despite their diminutive size and appearance, ticks are highly equipped to carry and transmit many serious diseases including Equine Piroplasmosis, Lyme Disease, Equine Granulocytic Anaplasmosis (Ehrlichiosis) and Tick Paralysis, so tick control remains an important management practice for horse owners.

Because ticks infected with serious diseases do not usually transmit those pathogens immediately and often must feed for a period of time before disease transmission, removing them from your horse as soon as possible is important. Check your horses for ticks thoroughly after a ride, and at least daily if they’re out on pasture in order to prevent disease transmission.

From a pasture management perspective, you can decrease the number of ticks your horse may pick up by removing brush and mowing tall grass where ticks like to live and discouraging wildlife such as deer that tend to reintroduce ticks to grazing areas.

Additional facts about Lyme disease in horses is available on theEquine Disease Communication Center's website at: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/lyme-disease

And as always, if you have questions on tick control or the diseases they can transmit to your horses, talk to your local horse doctor!

What is founder in horses? 🐴💥

Founder, also known as laminitis, is a painful and serious condition where the sensitive laminae inside the hoof become inflamed. This inflammation can cause the coffin bone to rotate or sink, leading to long-term damage and lameness.

The first radiograph shows a horse with normal radiographs while the second shows one who has foundered.

Why does it happen?
⚠️ Overeating grain or lush pasture
⚠️ Obesity or metabolic disorders
⚠️ Retained placenta in mares
⚠️ Excessive concussion on hard surfaces
⚠️ Systemic illness or infection

What to do:
🔍 Call your vet ASAP—this is an emergency
📸 Get radiographs to check bone alignment
🧊 Ice the feet in early stages to reduce inflammation
💊 Follow a treatment plan with your vet & farrier
👣 Bloodwork to check metabolic status & diet and manage weight carefully

Founder is serious—but with quick action and good care, many horses recover and stay comfortable.

Combining Eastern and Western medicine creates
a well-rounded approach to diagnosing, treating, and preventing issues before they become major problems.

Western medicine is essential for diagnostics like X-rays, ultrasounds, and bloodwork, allowing for precise treatment of injuries, infections, and diseases with modern veterinary care.

Eastern medicine focuses on balance and long-term wellness, using acupuncture (pictured here), chiropractic care, herbal therapy, and bodywork to support circulation, reduce inflammation, and enhance recovery naturally.

By blending both approaches, we can address not just symptoms, but the root cause of discomfort or imbalance, helping our horses feel and perform their best. Whether it’s managing chronic pain, improving digestion, or preventing injuries, a holistic approach gives our equine partners the best chance at a long, healthy, and happy life!

Nerve Block vs. Joint Block: What’s the Difference? 💉

At APHS, we use both nerve blocks and joint blocks as diagnostic tools used to help pinpoint lameness in horses, but they work in different ways!

Nerve Block (Local Anesthetic Injection into Nerves)
- Used to systematically numb areas from the bottom up
to find the pain source
- Targets specific nerves to desensitize a region of the
limb
- Helps determine if pain is coming from soft tissues,
tendons, ligaments, or joints

Joint Block (Intra-Articular Anesthesia, pictured here)
- Local anesthetic is injected directly into a joint
- Pinpoints joint-related pain (arthritis, inflammation, or
degeneration)
- Confirms if the discomfort is coming from inside the joint
rather than surrounding soft tissues

Both methods are crucial for accurate lameness diagnosis, helping us create the best treatment plan to get your horse back to soundness!

Protect your horse and the herd! 🐴💉

A Coggins test is essential for detecting Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), a serious and contagious disease. EIA is not treatable and transmitted through blood so a Coggins test helps identify infected horses. Stay compliant, travel safely, and keep your equine friends healthy! ✅

Keep Your Performance Horse Moving at Their Best!

Routine chiropractic adjustments are essential for keeping your performance horse balanced, flexible, and pain-free.
Restrictions in the spine and joints can lead to stiffness, uneven movement, and even lameness, preventing your horse from performing at their peak

Why Regular Adjustments Matter:
- Improves flexibility and range of motion
- Releases muscle tension and corrects imbalances
- Helps prevent compensatory injuries
- Enhances overall performance and comfort

When a horse has spinal restrictions, they may struggle with:
- Lead changes & collection
- Engaging their hind end
- Proper bend & suppleness
- Resistance under saddle

Regular bodywork keeps your athlete feeling their best, allowing them to move freely and perform without discomfort!
