How to help dry skin on your animals this winter.

It’s one of the most common problems in the winter for both pets and their parents: dry, itchy skin.

Not only is dry skin downright uncomfortable, but for pets, it can also lead to excessive scratching, excessive licking, and inflammation.

So, how do you alleviate and soothe your pet’s dry winter skin?

Use an oatmeal- or aloe-based shampoo the next time you give your pet a comfortably warm bath, Dr. Howe says. Burt’s Bees® Oatmeal Shampoo is a good option, while the Zesty Paws® Itch-Soother™ Dog Shampoo contains both oatmeal and aloe vera. Don’t bathe your pet too often, though. Most dogs only need a bath every month or two, while only a few types of cats need regular baths (hairless cats, long-haired cats and cats who can’t groom themselves).
Use a humidifier in your home. When it’s cold out, we naturally turn on the heater. But what you may not realize is, when you do, it takes moisture out of the air, leading to a drier environment that can irritate a pet’s skin. Humidifiers add water back into the air.
Turn to supplements that contain omega-3 fatty acids, like EicosaDerm® Omega 3 Liquid. Adding omega-3 fatty acids to your pet’s diet promotes a healthy coat and skin, and a healthier coat and skin may acclimate better to the changing climate.

Harsh winter weather can cause pets’ noses to become cracked, chapped, and calloused.

To protect and treat this area, use balms, like Dermoscent Bio Balm® for dogs or Bag Balm® for dogs and cats. Once applied, the balm relieves discomfort by moisturizing dry, damaged skin. Plus, it forms a protective layer from the harsh elements.

“Think of it like ChapStick® for dry, cracked lips,” Dr. Howe says.

We hope this information helps! Please share!

We were able to load our van with dog and cat beds, cat litter, cat food, rabbit food and chicken scratch and other needed items and deliver these items out to a Fairview hub. We know the tempature is dropping and we wanted to get nice warm beds to the animals who need it. Working with our community and the area hubs - helps us to get more items needed into the community quicker. We are happy to collect much needed items and then get them out and into our community where they need it the most.

It truly takes a village.

Can we just say we are so proud of our new meet and greet and play area! This area is built because of our wonderful community support! Like today while having someone coming in for a meet and greet and we get to let the dog loose in the enclosed area and the dog can relax and let the potential adopter really see the personality come out! As we are always saying it truly takes a village and we love our village/community and your on going support of our rescue. Thank you!

We wanted to wish everyone a safe and wonderful New Year.

As we reflect back on 2024 we have had ups and downs as well as most of our community has felt.

We have so many very exciting programs we will be kicking off in the new year.

We are hoping 2025 is a better year for all of us.

Thank you to all who have supported us thru the years and especially this year. We are all very proud of how everyone came together to help out in our community and we have met so many new people by being out in our community delivering food and supplies. For that we are grateful.

So here is to a wonderful 2025 for everyone and may all your dreams come true.

We will see you in the New year and excited to kick off new and exciting programs.

Thank you all - it truly takes a village and we love our village.

CHRISTMAS WITH PETS

A guide for pet owners: dangers under the Christmas tree.

With its customs and traditions, the Christmas season is a time of pleasure and contemplation for human beings. But for pets, it can get dangerous. In order to enjoy a carefree time with your four-legged loved ones, we recommend some precautionary measures:

The Christmas tree
Ribbons, fragrance oils and plants
Christmas dinner and chocolate
THE CHRISTMAS TREE
For cats and puppies in particular, the Christmas tree is an interesting novelty in the living room. They would just love to explore each twig – as well to gnaw at the branches and other things not at all intended for them. That can be risky.

CHRISTMAS DINNER
Our Christmas meals are absolutely a taboo for pets. Waste bins containing splintering chicken or fine fish bones and remnants of spiced food must be well sealed or kept in an inaccessible place so that animals cannot feast on them. Serious digestive problems and even intestinal injuries have taken many pet owners and their four-legged friends to veterinary emergency services over the holiday.
