We are very sad to announce the passing of our resident Grouchy Old Man, Douglas. Beloved Mentor and adoptive Grandpa to many of our younger pigs, Douglas was loved by many. He was found passed peacefully in the woods, in the big pasture, away from his normal area. We think he knew his time was near and didn't want to upset his family. When we brought him to the cemetery for burial, so many pigs from the herd came to say farewell, including many of his grandbabies.
Douglas' history is a bit of a mystery, he was found struggling in the woods, and was believed to have been there at least a year. His age was unknown, although it is believed his was a an old man, due to his many missing teeth. When he came to us, he was doing much better than he had been, but was still recovering from being left in the wild. He quickly gained weight, and a delightful grouchy attitude that was a big hit with the people in his life. In our original set up, he was kept in a pen next to some rescued babies. Doug tore down the fence so he could be with the babies, and was often found cuddling them, hanging out with the littles, and in general being a good Grandpa.
He will be deeply missed by many, including his rescuer Brandy Burns, his Grandma and Great Grandma, and Shay and myself, along with many many of his fellow herd mates.
