THE STORY OF JOE - This sweet boy and his herd were reported by concerned citizens. These citizens alleged that around a dozen horses had previously starved to death on this property. The horses had nothing to eat and had been chewing on the bark of trees. Fortunately, The Lauderdale District Attorney's office and The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department got involved and we were able to bring Joe and Flash to the quarantine shelter at SRER. Sadly, the black mare was down upon arrival and died at the scene. We have posted the "before and after" photos of Joe and the emaciated mare below.

THE STORY OF BUTTERCUP- We will never forget the first time we laid eyes on this precious girl. She had been attacked by dogs a few days earlier. Her open wounds were oozing with infection. Her condition was very serious and her prognosis was not good. Fortunately for Buttercup, a co-founder of SRER is a retired veterinarian with a huge heart. We moved Buttercup to her farm the following morning on an Easter Sunday. The veterinarian and her neighbor, who is a nurse, spent hours everyday cleaning Buttercup's wounds and giving her antibiotics and other meds. It was touch and go for a few weeks but as you can see Buttercup pulled through. She is living the good life with her forever family which includes another veterinarian. She is a very lucky and loved girl!

THE STORY OF PETE - This sweet c**t was found by the Lauderdale County Animal Control Officer. He was emaciated, covered in rain rot and quite fearful of people. Another thin horse on the property had already died. We are thankful the ACO found him and brought him to SRER before it was too late. The vet recommended that we treat him for anemia and a gastric ulcer due to him being starved. It took some time for Pete to recover but as you can see he is now thriving with his wonderful forever family.

THE STORY OF BUD & SISSY - When we started SRER, we had no idea how many horses were abandoned in our area each year. These two cuties were running loose and creating lots of chaos on HWY 72 in the Center Star area for quite some time before they were captured by deputies and the ACO. It seems that this Bud and Sissy were "looking for love in all the wrong places". If you've had minis or ponies, you know they can be more challenging to manage than full sized horses. Once caught, Bud and Sissy proved to be very sweet and cooperative. Fortunately, they were eventually adopted together by a family with lots of horse experience.

THE STORY of BEAU - This sweet gelding was found abandoned and tied to a porch by Colbert County Animal Shelter authorities. He was emaciated, covered in lice and had barbed wire in his tail. Two veterinarians estimated him to be 30 years old. Fortunately, he recovered and thrived for 8 more years as a healthy, happy horse. His "Before" and "After" photos are below as well as a photo from his 34th birthday party.

THE STORY OF ALLIE HOPE - This little dun filly was part of a horrific cruelty case in the Central area involving almost 30 equines. Sugar, now called Allie Hope, was emaciated, infested with parasites and covered in lice when we rescued her. She was so weak and lethargic we weren't sure she would survive the winter. You can see by the photo on the right that years later she is thriving in her new home. Her adopters are very kind and take excellent care of her.

Happy Thanksgiving! We are thankful for all who support SRER's lifesaving work. Rescue work can be heartbreaking but also rewarding when a rehabilitated horse is adopted into a caring forever home.
