Summer and fall are the peak time for arbovirus infection as these diseases (which include Eastern Equine Encephalitis [EEE], West Nile Virus [WNV], Western Equine Encephalitis [WEE] and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis [VEE]) are transmitted by several different species of mosquitoes and biting insects.

With more states reporting cases of West Nile Virus (28 cases have been reported in August as of today), this is your reminder to keep your horses up to date on vaccinations with the guidance of your veterinarian to best protect your equine friends from infection.

Learn more about West Nile Virus and find downloadable resources on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website at: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/west-nile-virus

The Fourth of July is almost here, and many horse owners are concerned about how their horses might react to loud fireworks. 🎆

In the graphic below are some tips to keep your pets and equine companions safe during the festivities.

If your horses are staying out overnight, now is a good time to check fencing and look for any hazards like rocks, branches, or holes that could lead to injury if an animal starts running. If you have a high level of concern about your horse's response, consult your veterinarian about the appropriateness of calming agents and sedatives in advance.

No matter what your plans are, please remember to practice safety and be considerate of the people and the animals living around you so everyone may enjoy the celebration.

Thank you to our Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.

Annual vet visit this week for routine exams and dental work. We were able to get a good look at Daisy Jane's lip tattoo and hope to track down more information about her life before she ended up in the deplorable conditions in Barton. Her owner, who is now charged with several felony counts, is scheduled to be arraigned later this month. We are grateful to all who support SRER's lifesaving work!

PLEASE SHARE- We've received several reports along with photos of emaciated horses without shelter in our area. We are very concerned about their chances of surviving the next few days without intervention. Please make sure your horses have access to hay, water and shelter. If your horses are underweight, please consider a waterproof blanket.
