Let’s talk first rides and starting c**ts. Anyone who knows me knows I love a good controversial
conversation🫢
Almost all c**ts started in my program get a first saddle and first ride in the same week. Now let’s define first rides…. Keep in mind this is my opinion.
A first ride is NOT you sitting on your horse and walking it around. A first ride is NOT Jeffries method for 30 minutes.
A first ride SHOULD be walk, trot, left, right, stop, back. Ideally a lope SHOULD be done aswell but absolutely by the third ride. With that being said, if you are starting your own horse on your own timeline then hey whatever works. BUT if you are starting horses as a “professional” then you need to be getting the most done that you can and setting that horse up for a successful future.
By the 5-10th ride I like that horse broke in the pole, understanding legs for direction, able to bend their ribcage around leg, backing fluidly NOT choppy. Most importantly absolutely no sticky footed reluctance to move forward business, that only gets people hurt. Lazy and sticky footed are NOT the same thing.
A LAZY horse will do what you ask, WHEN YOU ASK, but only offer as much energy as required of them. think your kid broke grandma safe horses.
A STICKY horse will have to be argued with to get an ounce of try from them, eventually these horses develop quirks and dangerous behaviors to avoid work. aka your buckers and rearers who use these behaviors as outlets when they don’t agree with your pressure or aids.
I have started countless horse and helped and watched countless more being started. What I have witnessed is horses started too slowly are commonly sticky footed, attitude towards pressure, don’t enjoy work, and developing a lot of quirks down the road.
Agree, disagree?
