Over the last 24 hours I have gotten many messages asking who I was referring to in my previous post, however, a specific person or business is not what the post was about.

The post was about the systemic issue that we have in the dog industry.

Cesar Millan and Holly

TyCalK9 and Mugshot

Touch Dog Training & Rehabilitation and Odie

Jeff Gellman and the bonked dog

April’s K911 Academy and Thor

Cypress Arrow K9 Academy and the cane corso

And the list goes on...

including the thousands of dogs that go under the radar.

We only seem to sensationalize and be outraged by the abuse of dogs when it falls on the extreme end of the spectrum.

But what happens after that?

We still support these people through tv shows, liking and sharing their social media posts, going to their conferences, recommending them to family and friends, regurgitating their pearls of wisdom.

While we think that we would be able to spot abuse happening and therefore would not support it in any sort of way the numbers of followers that these types of accounts have speak otherwise.

We have become desensitized to seeing dogs experience emotional and physical discomfort during training.

Our dogs, as an extension of us, need to be protected similarly to any other vulnerable minority in society.

We are transfixed by the promise of quick resolutions to problems. Perfect dogs that do as their told, when told - and if not we need to fix them.

Dogs couldn't possibly be animals with emotions similar to ours - so of course we can treat them differently. After all, comforting a scared child reinforces their fear... right?

We are smothered with information about dogs that is old, incorrect and continues to push the narrative that dogs (and their behavior) are simplistic.

And if dogs are simplistic they are easy to fix.

Behavior is complex.
Understanding dogs is complex.

But avoiding abusive training is not complex - it's incredibly easy. It's all about awareness and attention.

Stop paying attention. Starve them.
