A m/MC+ (237) with a fleck of merle coloration in her eye. The accepted norm suggests this is impossible yet here it is!

We have submitted the paternal grand sire (obvious merle, Embark m/M) to Pawprint. His cheek swab came back m/M (267). The experts say it is impossible to produce a m/MC+ (237) from a m/M267 only parent. We submitted a semen sample and he is still reporting as m/M(267) only.

The author of the Merle book has taken this litter into her files as a possible deviation from the accepted norm and will be following the progress and further testing as it becomes available.

Sire of litter m/M237!

Merle lengths from pawprint are back and we have a mosaic! I’ll post the pups we tested, their merle length reports and their embarks soon! Spoiler alert, the pups appearing black/rust are m/M237, the regular harlequins are m/267, the double merle is M237/M267. The mosaic I will save for a surprise!

There was a question about why I would spay the mother to the litter after this. The decision has nothing to do with the merle. She is a carrier for HUU (Bladder Stones) and both litters from her have had a high HUU carrier incidence. There is not enough testing currently being done in the breed to risk this in the gene pool. We own her littermate sister who is clear and still have access to the pedigree if we chose to use it later.

We have an exciting and crazy litter we will be posting updates on.

11 puppies born from a Harlequin mother and a Black/Rust father.

The puppies are (per embark dna) genetic double merle, regular merle, regular black and rust and cryptic merle!

Further DNA is being run on the father (Embark and Tilia merle length) and additional dna on the cryptic and double merle harlequins will follow.
