Today for “Grooming Topics”: Fleas

A flea is a tiny little bug that bites down on our pets, like a angry little vampire, and leaves them itching and uncomfortable. It is frustrating and time consuming to get rid of fleas, for your pets and your home. The best way to keep this from being a problem is to prevent it by using something like “Frontline”, or a flea collar.

When you are brushing your pet down, please keep an eye out for little black specs or movement in the fur. If you are unsure how to take care of this issue, you can always check online or call your veterinarian for advice.

The most common way of taking on this issue is washing them with a flea bath soap. This has to be a thorough application, leaving almost nowhere for those little bugs to hide. Once done and dry, it’s time to use a “flea comb” to carefully go through the fur and brush out any remaining fleas.

However easy a bath can be- the bigger problem remaining is looking into the pet’s immediate environment. If you have a pet covered in fleas in your home, you have to check your home for fleas and treat each room, each piece of furniture, and any clothing your pet may have been in contact with. Fleas can be a problem for any warm-blooded animal, including us humans, and those bites are no joke!

Today for "Grooming Topics": Basics of pet grooming

Grooming is something many of us are familiar with. There are trims and hair cuts, brushing and bathing, or even just a nail trim. As people, we can go get our teeth cleaned, our hair cut- but unlike our furry friends we don't wiggle or fight our barbers- and we certainly don't bite them either!

We give our pets the care they need, and there are experienced groomers everywhere that know how to handle your pet, and provide a pleasant experience! Pricing can vary from service to service, but it is well worth it.

Although grooming is an excellent way to care for or pamper your pet, parts of the process can be stressful. It is a good idea to start grooming your pet young, and train with treats for them to at least tolerate things like clippers and scary blow-dryers.

Dog collars are more than just a decoration reflecting your pets personality, they carry our pets I.D., Rabies vaccination, and identifying tags. Collars are good to have on your pet, even if you decide to use a harness for walking!

Dog collars, however good they are, can cause some issues when it comes to your dogs fur coat. There is always a possibility of hair getting matted or stuck, or even worn down over time when a collar is too tight. The general rule is that you should be able to put a finger or two under the dogs collar while wearing it. This allows for a good range of movement, keeping the wear and tear down for your pets fur coat.

Today for “Grooming Topics” : Kennel Cough

Kennel cough is a highly contagious upper-respiratory infection seen in dogs in any shape or size. This is a common issue to watch out for when boarding your dogs at a daycare, grooming shop, or boarding kennel.

It’s always good to keep an eye out for any changes in your dog, especially if they have been anywhere with a confirmed case of kennel cough. The “Bordetella” vaccine, used as a preventative, is often required for dogs that are kept at boarding facilities and crowded pet areas.
