I’ve got this pretty grey mare, Ivy, in for a restart. She’s coming along. First time under saddle since she’s been here. Any guesses what I did right before saddling her? 🤠

This video means a lot to me. A week ago, this horse would dive to the left when working to the right, wanting to come up and over.

I needed to get to his hind end deeper and then put meaning back into the outside rein. These things needed to be broken down and worked on separately, the results show. This also helps in our turn arounds. You can see him switch from coke bottling to doing it correctly when he feels that outside rein and leg.

This horse can stop, but he didn’t want to float down through his transitions. You can see him hesitate when I bring him back down but he made the right choice and walked off.

So proud off Rohan!

Todays horsemanship challenge:

Send your horse over a tarp and have them stop with all 4 feet on the tarp!

Add pressure when they come off, allow them to find peace in the relief of the release of pressure when they move across the tarp.

See how slowww you can get them to step. Ask for one foot at a time.

So many benefits:

Trailer loading
De-spooking
Slowing down
Water crossing
Mounting block

Thanks for modeling Rohan!

Meet Rohan!

I’ve been working with Rohan over the last couple months. He’s an interesting horse who was taught a lot of “fancy” before he knew how to move his body. He’s been described as “ADHD” but after some investigation, I’m learning we just need to direct and go with all the energy he brings to the table.

This video is small and quite insignificant in our journey, but I’m proud of him because he looks comfortable. He says wow, I have all this energy and now I have a job I can use it for.

I’m just so grateful for clients and friends willing to slow down and back up when needed. 🤎

I’ve been thinking about the hindquarters quite a bit lately.

Common wording “disengage the hindquarter” doesn’t sit right with me. Collection, forward movement, lateral movement: it all comes from the hindquarter. I want the hindquarter ENgaged, I want it working, moving, and freed up.

In the picture below, you can see this handsome sucker stepping his inside hind across and in front of his outside hind. Results: driving us forward and lateral and a smile on my face.

Food for thought! Lots more to consider, always. 🤠

P.S Get in touch with Clara Phillips for some killer shots!

Guinness update!

I sold Guinness (now Zia) back in September to an awesome home with Courtney McCall! Since then we’ve been working together a couple times a month to help get them acquainted.

As many know, this is a very special horse in my life. I’m so proud of this team and the work they’ve been putting in together. This big bay mare is now also assisting in a therapy program. Not only does she have the heart for it, but a solid foundation.

Thank you Courtney for giving her the best home, care, and for allowing us in on your journey!

This is a horse I’m going to miss. Buddy gets to go home tomorrow to start life as a ranch horse.

More than anything this horse has taught me to trust my work and the program. He helped show me the importance of being able to go with one.

Thank you Becky Schwartz for your trust in me! Super excited for you two.

No shame in taking 30 days to start your 30 days!

Buddy is progressing nicely.

Wishing you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving. 🤎

I’m feeling thankful for what this horse has been teaching me. It’s been all about trusting in our work and in the process.

We talk about the horse “hunting” for the relief of pressure and finding peace. I think we hunt that just as much. I love seeing this horse relax and get comfortable.

As always, thank you for being my spotter on these baby horses and bringing good conversation to the table, Mike Brashear Horsemanship.

Couldn’t be happier with Buddy’s first ride. Quiet and forward. Working on the horse’s timeline means slowing down sometimes, and I’m glad we did.

Thank you for your help and insights, Mike Brashear Horsemanship!

Becky Schwartz, he’s going to make a good one.

Help me welcome Buddy to the program! This handsome guy is here to get started under saddle.

His owner is one of those cool people that helped me get going in the beginning. Always fun when a friend wants to send one to you!

Happy Friday, folks!

What do my first interactions with a new c**t look like?

When I get a new c**t in, the first thing that needs to happen is he needs to be set up for success. When you take a 5 year old child to their first day of kindergarten, what does that first day look like? There might be a tantrum, he’s fresh away from his home and parents. He’s not familiar with his surroundings and has no life experience. The first thing we want to do with this kiddo is get him comfortable, get introduced to his teacher and his classmates. We then might show him around and go over classroom rules. What we wouldn’t do is sit him at his desk and expect him to spell his name.

The same goes for new c**ts. We have to prepare them to learn, set them up for success. Some of these horses have been handled and may already be leading around. Others, we may need to start there. Luckily, there’s a lot you can teach before even haltering a horse for the first time.

C**ts need a firm, but gentle guidance. We need to set clear boundaries, but they have to trust that we won’t hold a grudge. They must learn to make mistakes, and it’s my job, as the leader, to have the feel and timing to correct the mistake. But again, not hold a grudge.

Wether the c**t has been handled or not, my first couple days look the same. I want my c**t hooking on. To me, this is more about a feel than a physical connection (halter and lead). A c**t that is hooked on, you can draw him to you, send him away, disengage his hind quarters, and move his shoulder. This can be done with a halter and lead, but it’s easier to test your work with your c**t loose in a pen. Heck, it’s the best way to start a session with any horse each time you catch them in their pen (pasture large or small, or even a stall).

Another perk to starting this way, the c**t always has something to refer back to. It becomes a safe space for him when he becomes troubled. If you are an efficient leader, he will look to you when he’s worried.
