Just a quick reminder to give your monthly parasite preventatives to protect your pets from fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites. 🐜

These parasites are no joke and are extremely prevalent in our area, so make sure to give preventatives all year round as recommended. 🚨 Skipping just one dose can significantly increase their risk of contracting these pesky buggers. 😳

It's been raining cats and dogs lately! ☔️ Did you know that bad weather can put your pet at increased risk of getting sick or even requiring emergency care?

🔹 Stress decreases your pet's immunity and puts them at higher risk of getting sick. It can also cause GI upset or urinary issues to develop and puts your pet at increased risk of illness or injury from anxiety-related behaviors.

🔹 Not wanting to go out to potty or "holding it" for hours can cause urinary or bladder issues from UTIs to more serious conditions. On the other hand, if your pet has an accident in the house, it can put other pets and your family at risk of getting sick too.

🔹 If your pet sticks their nose in the wet grass, drinks from a puddle or licks their wet paws after being outside, they could contract Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection transmitted through wildlife urine and causes kidney and liver failure both in pets and in people too.

🔹 Standing water and puddles are prime breeding ground for mosquitos. Mosquito transmit heartworms, which cause serious damage to the heart and lungs and may be fatal if left untreated. Make sure your pet is on prevention consistently to help protect them!

🔹 If your pet is used to going for walks or playing outside, they probably have extra energy to burn, which could spell trouble. They may be more likely to get into things they shouldn't. Toxic ingestion could require immediate care, and pets are more likely to eat toys, socks or other household items that can cause intestinal blockage, which can become life-threatening and may require emergency surgery.

Noise Aversion, or Noise Phobia, is one of the most common causes of fear, anxiety, and stress for our pets. Loud unexpected noises like fireworks or thunderstorms can cause significant panic attacks, which can be traumatizing to them and can be very stressful for you and your family to manage. 😢

Now's the time to make sure that you're prepared to help your pet cope with the inevitable fireworks frenzy that the holiday weekend will bring. If your pet has been prescribed anti-anxiety medications or supplements, make sure you have enough on hand to get through the coming weekend. Don't wait until the last minute, request a refill today! 👍

If your pet gets anxious or stressed during fireworks or loud noises and you think they would benefit from medications or supplements to help decrease their anxiety and keep them calm and relaxed this weekend, give us a call to see what our doctor team would recommend. 🫶

Help us thank our VMC Veterinary Team for all that they do for our pet patients and their people!

The AVMA proudly joins the World Veterinary Association, HealthforAnimals, and colleagues from around the world in celebrating World Veterinary Day. The 2024 theme is "Veterinarians are essential health workers."

Today's veterinarians are the only doctors educated to protect the health of both animals and people. They work hard to address the health and welfare needs of every species of animal. Veterinarians also play critical roles in environmental protection, research, food safety, and public health. Thank you to all the veterinarians around the world!

We've had several patients who were treated for foreign body ingestion in the last month -- in fact we saw 5 cases just in the last week! 😬 So, let's talk about it!

Both dogs and cats can eat things they aren't supposed to, and when they do, there's a risk of the object or material causing an obstruction in the GI tract. This is a condition which can become life-threatening and may require emergency surgery. 😳😳

The object can become stuck and block the GI tract preventing your pet from being able to eat, drink, or digest their food. If a complete obstruction develops, the area past the blockage begins to fill with gas, and as it expands, it starts to cut off the blood supply causing irreversible damage and tissue death. 😨

Some pets are more prone to eating things than others, but it can still happen even if it's not something they've been known to do. That's why it's so important to know what to watch for at home. If you notice any of these signs, then have your pet seen by a vet as soon as possible:

⚠️ Vomiting → No amount of vomiting is normal, but repeated vomiting in a short period of time and vomiting right after eating or drinking are both especially concerning.

⚠️ Decreased Appetite → Appetite changes are often the first sign of a problem for our pets. If your pet is not eating as much as usual, is not as interested in eating like they normally are, or refuses to eat, they should definitely be seen.

⚠️ Lethargy → Changes in behavior, attitude, or energy level are an indication of how your pet is feeling. If your pet is quieter than usual, not their normal self, hiding or isolating themselves more than usual, hesitating to do things they normally enjoy or do right away, not wanting to get up or move around, that means your pet is REALLY not feeling well and should be seen by a vet sooner than later.

If you notice any changes in your pet's behaviors or routines, give us a call or schedule an appointment online to have them seen, but if there's something they ate, DON'T WAIT!

Oooohhh Duke 😍… this guy is chillin like a villain after his neuter surgery. Why are our patients so comfortable just after surgery:
1️⃣we give layers of pain support. We are on top of pain management before the procedure starts giving a variety of pain control before, during , and after the surgery. 2️⃣we address their emotional needs/anxiety level and medicate as needed for each patient3️⃣we give them a comfortable environment. Our patients stay warm on the best/safest warming technology (the black blanket you see in the video) and soft blankets.

Many dogs retained their deciduous teeth, especially their upper canines. Most of the time the teeth fail to fall out on their own and it is best to consider removing them with a skilled veterinarian at the time of the spay or neuter.. or earlier in some cases.
