Decided to space these posts out so you weren't overwhelmed by information. Here is informational post number 6.
Do you have a pharmacy?
We do have an in-clinic pharmacy and can fill most medications. Sometimes we have to special order certain medications, and it can take a few days to get them. Some medications that are both human and animal medications can be filled by local pharmacies. Vetsource is the pharmacy we recommend using to have medications delivered to your home. We do have an online prescription fee for using outside pharmacies to cover the time it takes our staff to review files and submit approvals.
In veterinary medicine we have what is called a veterinary-client-patient relationship (VCPR) to prescribe and fill medication. In the state of Colorado this means that we must have physically seen and examined the animal in the last 12 months. The VCPR allows us to refill long term medications for things like arthritis, seizures, and thyroid issues among others. Unfortunately, if we have not seen the animal in the past year, we are not legally allowed to refill a medication. This is why we require annual exams for refills. Some medications also require testing at certain intervals to be sure the doses are still correct.
How do I get a refill?
If you call the clinic during business hours you will follow the prompts and press option 1. You will then leave a message letting us know your name, your pet’s name and what medication or medications you need refilled. This message will then be reviewed by a technician and/or doctor. If the medication can be refilled, you will be notified when it is ready for pickup. If it cannot be refilled one of our staff will call you and discuss why and what we need to refill the medication. This process can take up to 24 hours.
If you call after hours, you will press option 2. This will allow you to leave a message for the office with your name, animals name and medication you need refilled. This message will be checked during normal business hours, and the same process will be followed. If you call on Saturday or Sunday, the message will not be received until Monday morning.
What if I want to pick up dewormer, heartworm medication, or flea and tick preventatives?
You may just walk in and request to purchase these from behind the counter. However, most of these are still prescription medications. This again means we need to have seen the pet in the last 12 months. For heartworm medications we also require a heartworm test to start prevention and every 2 years after starting. If you have a puppy that is less than 7 months old, they can start heartworm prevention without a test but will need tested when they get older. You may also choose to sign a waiver to decline this test. We do prefer that you do the testing to keep your animal safe. Regular testing is also highly encouraged by the American Heartworm Society.
