Tonight we welcome a new rescue into our home.
Everyone meet Chester
As I was leaving my neighborhood tonight to run errands, I saw this little guy wondering the streets alone in the dark and rain. After about 30 minutes of trying to catch him, we were able to secure him in my friend Cora 's car. This time of night every shelter is closed and doesn't reopen until noon Friday.
Upon examination, we found he was extremely malnourished, had cuts and scratches all over his body, and his nails were so long they were curling into his paws. We got him inside, fed him, and bathed him. So many fleas and bugs washed out of his fur into the tub. The water was murky with dirt and blood, and his skin was inflamed. We dried him up and set up a cage with towels in a separate room of my house away from my other dogs. A quiet and warm place for him to rest.
His wounds are being cleaned and cared for, and we are making a plan to get his skin under control.
I started him on a nutrition paste in his food to help gain back what he is lacking. He has drank over 16 oz of water so far, and ate 1 cup of dry food, plus the nutrition paste. I went ahead and gave him his first does of dewormer, and trimmed his nails. He has a great appetite, and is very very sweet.
For now he is in quarantine in a separate room on the house. No other contact with other animals, and strict hand washing before and after handling.
Vet visits are being scheduled, and further care plans will be discussed.
He has a long road ahead, but we are here for it!
This is what I love to do. This is what I want to spend my life doing.
More updates to come.
