We have a very special update to share with you today. ❤️🐾

A few years ago, a dog named Harmon came through the doors at LCDAS. His coat and body were worn and he was heartworm positive. It was obvious Harmon's previous life had not been easy. But, as we volunteers quickly came to know, he had the most beautiful and loving soul.

Heartbroken, we watched for months as adopters passed by Harmon's kennel without any interest. They couldn't see how special we knew he was deep down.

Harmon began to deteriorate after months on the adoption floor. So, we were beyond grateful when we found out that Gulf Coast Humane Society was taking him into their shelter. And we were even more grateful when we got word that Harmon had FINALLY been adopted from GCHS shortly after Hurricane Ian.

It took quite awhile for Harmon to finally find his way into the loving home he always deserved. But we're thrilled to know he's thriving now, and that the rest of his life will be just as beautiful as we always knew he was.

Big thanks to GCHS for helping Harmon find his forever family. And even bigger thanks to his adopters for giving him a beautiful life! (Be sure to scroll through all the photos and read the update that Harmon's family recently sent to GCHS at the end!)

A volunteer took Arlo for a 3 mile walk this morning and this is what she had to say about him:
“I got to thinking about my mother-in-law as I was walking Arlo and the fact that they share similar characteristics.
•She loved to go for long walks and engage with people- That’s Arlo!
•She had a carefree happy-go-lucky attitude- That’s Arlo!
• She was adventurous and wasn’t afraid to try new things- That’s Arlo!
•She loved to “counter snack”, we think Arlo would also!😳
•She liked to sit in her recliner, watching sports and nod off for a quick nap- So would Arlo!

I think she would have loved Arlo, a simple, good natured, happy guy who just needs a home!”

Volunteer Isabell recently took Blossom for an outing and this is what she had to say about our sweet little girl:

“We went downtown Fort Myers and she did amazing. She walked nice on the leash for the most part. She didn’t react to other dogs barking at her and layed next to my chair while I was eating lunch without begging for food.”

UPDATE: Daisy has been adopted!

We forgot that National Hiking Day was yesterday so we celebrated it today with shelter dog Daisy on the John Yarbrough Linear Trail.
Daisy can get amped up at the shelter but once out the door and into nature and the real world her blood pressure goes down and she relaxes, casually and elegantly putting one paw in front of the other.
Even the electric bikes zooming past didn’t break her calm.

She’s only a year old and lacks a bit of confidence so these morning walks experiencing new things is great therapy for her. She’s smart, treat motivated, sits on command and is eager to learn and please. Her breed is a mystery but we’re thinking there may be some Malinois in the mix? With the right adopter we know she will thrive and become the dog she was meant to be!

Jackson is a 1 year old Doberman Pinscher. He’s small for the breed and underweight as you can see. He doesn’t look like he was especially well cared for in his previous “home” but dogs are amazingly resilient and Jackson is moving on hoping for a better life. We adore his long lanky legs and his gentle kisses. He’s a special guy and we are hoping he finds the perfect family that will love him and never let him go.

UPDATE: Marshall has been adopted!

Marshall is 4 months old and already big and thick. Like all dogs we hope his adopter starts his schooling immediately. With a little patience and a positive approach young Marshall will become a great, well behaved family member. All too often adopters neglect the training and the dog ends up back at the shelter 40lbs bigger, jumpy, mouthy, not leash trained and virtually impossible to adopt out again. This sweet, smart little guy has tons of potential but it’s up to you to make him the best he can possibly be!

He’s available for adoption at www.leelostpets.com

Gracie was recently out as a Weekend Warrior and this is what her host family had to say about her:

“I fostered this pretty girl this past weekend. Her name is Gracie and it fits her well. She is the most sweetest, affectionate and well mannered rescue dog I have ever met. She is house broken, crate trained and listens well. Obeys simple commands and a very polite treat taker! She doesn’t care for people food and could care less if you dropped food on the floor. She loves to go outside and play but is just as happy to lay in the sun. She loves bones and toys. She loves people and dogs but is part hound so she will go after cats, squirrels and lizards in a heartbeat. Runs as fast as the wind and jumps like a deer. And if you’re looking for cuddles she’s your dog. She hugs everyone she meets, literally hugs you! She will sit with you, lay with and sleep with you. All the while you must be touching her! She will demand it! 🥰.”

Gracie made such a good impression on this nice family that they want to WW her again if she isn’t adopted this week.

Good photos of shelter pets are attention getters! They bring in potential adopters and increase the chances that the pets will be adopted. Good photos also make the shelter stand out in a positive professional way. That’s why the administrators of this page are so focused on making the dogs look their best!

Today the volunteers took these photos of the dogs that are new to the adoption floor. The ones still without photos, Chrissy, Janet and Marshall were in surgery today.
We hope you see a face you fall in love with!

Rihanna has been without a home for over 3 months. This short, stout, robust, fun loving, athletic, comical girl loves to be outside zooming around the play yard. Her girth and sudden bursts of energetic enthusiasm may not be a good fit for families with small children but for someone who knows, loves and can manage her breed characteristics she would be a delightful companion!

Stop by the shelter and ask to meet Rihanna!
