Talk about a looker! Niner is here as a consignment. She is a 6 yr old mare started in barrels, has been used outside and is fixing to start her new life as a breakaway horse. If anyone is looking shoot me a message!

If you can’t do it fast… SLOW DOWN.

This goes for all aspects of life.

Is your horse struggling to counter arc… slow it down, ask for two steps instead of ten. Build a solid foundation.

Can’t make the perfect turn? Place their feet slow, walking and trotting, be perfect slow.

Struggling to reach those big goals? Slow it down. Crush small goals. Take smaller steps but NEVER STOP MOVING.

1% better everyday is 100% better in 100 days.

We had a fun week in Florida! Between hanging out with family and doing body works on horses it was a busy week! Meeko and Flynn loaded up in trailer they’ve never been in like gentleman at 3 am this morning for their long trip to New Mexico.

Set a goal and make it happen.

No excuses, just keep going until you reach it.

When you get there, make a bigger goal.

Continue to repeat.

I believe every horse needs a good mineral in their lives. I have fed SweetPro’s Equipride and Equilix for years. I have always felt like it gives my horses that extra little step that they need.

Charmer and Valerie had a great day yesterday.

Valerie and I had to go rope a runaway calf. She’s starting to figure out how to track and what position she needs to be in when we’re roping. By the time we got to the pens Val was done but she learned you can’t quit and you have to keep going even when you’re tired.

Charmer almost got a cow roped on him but thankfully she followed her calf that I had roped back to the herd. Charmer got to sort today. It was about 40 head so we took it nice and slow. This was Charmer’s 7th ride and he’s starting to learn the moves. Working the gate nice and slow gave him confidence and understanding on why we ask for the moves that we do.

Successful trainers can read a horse and its personality.

They know how to earn trust and respect. They understand how much pressure they can apply without causing regression in the training.

Horses are similar to people.

Sometimes you can ask an individual to do a task and they willing do it. Other times an individual has to be pushed to do a task. Some can handle being scolded and some shut down if you raise your voice at them.

Same concept.

Learn to read the animal if you want to have success training.

Miss Val also had a wonderful day last Wednesday. She was dragging like an old broke finished horse. The Friday before she had over reached and scraped herself pretty good so she got a few days off and she rode off like she didn’t have any days off.

Last Monday we were branding for the Canyon Ridge Cattle Company at the Palo Duro Canyon. Monday morning we were gathering and Roman got his first ever calf roped off him. He got Tuesday off and Wednesday he got to drag some calves. They were big soggy suckers that weren’t very easy him to drag but he powered through it great. During the sorting he was starting to figure out why I ask for those moves at home. I couldn’t have asked for him to work better.

Roman got to rope a runaway today gathering the canyon. We gathered the canyon and were pushing the cows to the pens when a cow and her calf ran off. The cow got turned around but the calf didn’t. Roman and I came to save the day. Tomorrow we’ll be dragging calves.

Trying to get this video to post has been a pain in the butt. I’ve been trying for a week to get it to post. 🤦🏼‍♀️
This is the way we like our c**ts to have their first rides, boring. Charmer handled his ride like a champ. He was a little nervous but that's to be expected but by the end of the ride he was gaining confidence. Theres always something to learn from c**ts. Brazos had a c**t that if you didn't sit and let him get comfortable with you on him, he was going to buck. Now Brazos lets c**ts stand until they relax before asking them to move.

Roman and I got to show off a little for his owners yesterday and today. I got looking back to see how many rides he has between the few rides last fall and last month. Y’all’s he doesn’t even have 30 rides yet! We are 5 rides short of 30 rides and he is riding like a broke horse. Yesterday we went about 8-10 miles because the cows were leaving the calves behind. We had to get around a few and bring them. He learned what a hard days work was and that the trailer is a fantastic place. We had a few fights which I knew was coming because they usually do at some point and I came out on top. C**ts like him are hard to send back because he is so much fun.

Valerie had hard long day yesterday too. She went about 15 miles, roped 3 calves, lead one back to the herd, tied one down and had to drag one into the pens. She had everything amazing. I unfortunately couldn’t get any videos or pictures but she dang sure earned her some grain at the end of the day. She ever once quit. She over reached pretty good yesterday so we decided she needs today off to rest. Starting Monday we will be branding at the Palo Duro Canyon for Canyon Ridge Cattle company. I will have more updates Wednesday night!

Priorities make or break you.

There is enough time in the day to get it done.

Stop sitting on the couch and scrolling on the phone.
Stop watching television.

Go ride your horse.
Go to the gym or for a run.

Do something that is going help you achieve your goals.
Do something that will make you better.

Charmer’s 3rd and last time getting drove. I wish Facebook allowed more than one video because I would post the first time he was drove and his last time! The difference is night and day. This is how we like them to drive before we put their first ride on.

This is a good explanation on how c**ts learn. Each c**t is different and has be taught differently. I understand this 100% because being dyslexic I always learned different than everyone else.

To the current and future c**t breakers and horse trainers ✍️ some wisdom from (what the tik tok trainers call me) “a gunsel” 🐴

On my first day of 8th grade my math teacher, Mr.Hunter, stated to the class “MATH PEOPLE ARE LAZY”
He went on to explain that the smartest people you’ll encounter are the ones who can accomplish their goal utilizing the shortest route possible. That doesn’t mean they don’t work hard for what they accomplish, it means they have found shorter ways that work effectively to get to the correct final answer.

My middle school self thought “Dang, finally a math class I don’t have to show my work in!” I thoroughly enjoyed his class to the point I didn’t want to miss school. That was the only year I felt that way 😜

Now as I break c**ts and train horses of all levels and calibers I think back to his statement. Riding horses is a lot like math class. Heck, a lot like school in general.
The horses are the students, each with a different level and understating of the subject. Each student needs to be taught the same thing just a little differently to get the correct answer.
📌type 1 Some have to work really hard, work through the problem, re-try over again, and still can not achieve the answer the first few tries. They need constant reminders of how to get to the answer. These are the ones who erase holes in their paper 📝 because they have to keep trying before either finally getting the right answer or throwing a fit and quitting. They take a lot of extra time and help just to pass the class. Usually they want to live up to the “Math people are lazy” statement but math just isn’t that easy for them.
📌 type 2 You have your in betweeners who need to work through the problem to get to the answer, but usually once they’ve got it down you don’t need to remind them how to do it. They’ll get frustrated one day and have the problem figured out the next. Most of these guys just needed a break for a little while to let their brain clear. They come back with a clean mindset and still have knowledge from the day before to continue learning from. Frustrating days don’t usually set these guys back. They just sleep it off and come back ready to try again.
📌 type 3 (These are the “Math People”) Some know the answer before the problem is finished being wrote on the board. These are the ones that either 1. Minds their business, does their work, and get their A+ or 2. Argues with the teacher about everything, is frustrated that everyone else isn’t as smart as them, and have a really bad attitude for the brains they have.
Some teachers can teach all students equally and effectively, while others benefit only 1 or 2 types while others fall behind or end up quitting.

We as the trainer have to be the teacher that identify what type of student we have, handle each students situation, and ultimately have them all learn something in the end.

We know time is of the essence, but so is patience. When you’re asking a horse to perform, the simplest way to ask is usually the quickest way to get a response. If the teacher demonstrates a problem in the most basic way to start out, most of the students will understand the basics from the get go. From there the teacher can enhance the difficulty gradually. Your type 1 student will be able to keep up and gradually learn without the frustration of trying to keep up with the type 3 student. The type 3 student, who will try to get ahead of the rest, can still go at their own pace while still learning the basics of the equation. Type 1 and 2 aren’t confused and able to perform to the standard while type 3 excels. The trainer is being lazy in the sense he/she is not asking for too much before the horse is ready which ultimately would with more work in the long run. The type 2 and 3 horses have ample time and knowledge to grow their abilities. The type 3 horses tend to be able to utilize their abilities to their full potential quicker due to the slow and correct basis.

All 3 types of students will struggle or won’t pass if the teacher tries to rush the learning process.
All 3 types of horses will possibly blow up and form bad habits if rushed in the training process. Even the smart ones that catch on easy and want to perform still need to slow down and do the basics.

It’s ok to be a “math person” if your using training techniques that utilize the simplest and shortest route to build a confident and successful horse.
However, if you took that statement as an excuse to sit on your butt, ride for 10 minutes and ask an unprepared horse for maneuvers it can’t even begin to do, take a step back. Training might not be the right field of work for you. Not every horse is a “Math person” some of them are going to need you to be a history or English teacher.
Happy training and good luck
-tik tok gunsel 🤙

This is the 3rd time I have tried to post this video hopefully it works this time. Charmer got drove on Friday by the end of it he was driving pretty good. We drive our c**ts before we rode them so they will understand what we are asking of them during the first ride. Sometimes a c**t will need a few days of driving to truly get the understanding of what is being asked of them. Charmer was drove on Friday and Saturday. He will get drove again tomorrow before his first ride. Excuse Sterling screaming. 😅

Yes! It’s so important to hobble train horses! This is the reason we tie legs up in our ground work. You never know when you’ll need it!

Yesterday was day 2 for Charmer. His first time being saddled and having his head tied around. We start every c**t in a side pull. Tying their heads around teaches them to give to the pressure without fighting you.

What you do to one side you’ve got to do to the other. Charmer handled his actual first day extremely well! Tying up legs has so many benefits and we believe it’s very beneficial to our ground work.

Brazos’s home bred c**t! Charmer is out of Brazos’s buckskin mare April (Poco James King X Doc Bar) by Sons CD. We are super excited about this c**t! He is so sweet and wants to be your friend personality. He is the total opposite of his mother. It’s going to be fun to see his progress.

Hopefully April is gonna carry me a c**t by Roosters Daimonds!
