If you know me, you know I’m over the top with my babies… but this little guy holds a special place in my heart. I had a little song I made up and always sang to him. Seeing him living his best life literally gets me teary eyed. 🥹🫶🏻

To those wanting / interested in an ISABELLA (or any dilute) puppy, PLEASE READ!

Many people are interested in Isabella puppies, which I totally understand, they’re absolutely gorgeous! 🥰

BUT, there are risks that come with Isabella’s, or any other dilute color.

I want everyone to be aware of CDA!

👩🏻‍⚕️ Robin Downing, DVM, DAAPM, DACVSMR, CVPP, CRPP - has a great explanation on CDA and answers a few questions about it, I took a few pieces from what she wrote.

“Color dilution alopecia (CDA) is a genetic recessive inherited condition that causes patches of hair thinning or loss, and may also include flaky and/or itchy skin. The condition is associated with individuals who have what is called “dilute” color, and is most commonly seen in dogs with a blue or fawn coat. These puppies are born with a normal looking hair coat, and the symptoms of CDA may begin to manifest at 6 months of age or older.

While CDA is not curable, it is fairly straightforward to manage. Your veterinarian will determine the best way to proceed. Management may involve shampoos, rinses, and/or ointments to manage dry skin, scaling or superficial infections. If needed, your veterinarian may prescribe oral antibiotics to treat a more severe skin infection. There may also be nutritional recommendations to maximize skin health in the face of CDA.

Due to the inherited nature of this disease, dogs with CDA, their parents, and their siblings should not be used in breeding programs.

Other than overall appearance, health is not at risk - there may be some skin specific issues that will emerge and need to be treated. Your dog may develop scaly skin in the bald areas. She may also develop small bumps or even pustules associated with a bacterial skin infection.
Some dogs with CDA will experience itching that may need to be managed.”

The hardest part of breeding isn't the lack of sleep, the constant worry during pregnancy and then in those first few hours, days or weeks. It's not the time put into cleaning, socializing, evaluating temperaments or finding good homes. The hardest part is the last hug and kiss you have go give them when you tell them they are the best puppy before you send them off on their new adventure. Do they know you love them? Do they know you chose the very very best home you could for them where they would be loved and have fun? Do they forgive you for not keeping them? No matter how much you know that puppy will be loved and cared for in its new home, it breaks your heart a little every time one of them has to leave.

So, for those who ask a breeder "how can you let them go?" Or "don't you cry when they leave?" the answer is yes, I've cried every time a puppy leaves. I raise puppies because I love it. I do it because I want my breeds to continue and to be healthy, functional, animals with solid conformation and good temperaments. I do it because there ARE great homes looking for great dogs and it's not fair to anyone to keep them all here (much as I'd like to sometimes).

So, the next time you pick up your puppy from their breeder, know what you're really taking is a piece of their heart, and make sure you take the very best care of it.
