Reminder to have fun when you’re training your dog and to try new things!
Here is a snapshot of Nala’s session of proofing her down (stay)! This is a great way to solidify your commands, and show them that no matter what goes on, wait until you hear your magic release word: “FREE!”
This will help with reliability, impulse control, and over time they will settle easier as they worry about what is around them less!
Note: Nala did get many rewards for being brave 😊

How often do you challenge your dog?
Today we practiced obedience around different distractions such as food on the ground, a nearby toy, a new object to get on and sit.
When adding these different layers of difficulty in your daily repetitions, it will help your dog be more prepared when distraction happens in real life outside of their house!
We know that a tug toy on the ground isn’t the same thing as seeing a squirrel, but if your dog hasn’t learned to think, problem solve, and follow your instruction when there’s a toy around, you can bet they won’t be able to do it when a squirrel is running around!
Practicing with food on the floor during training can help them learn that dripping human food doesn’t mean they can automatically scoop it up, or it can help them if the ground is covered with acorns on a walk, or even recalling away from finding cooked chicken bones at the park!
We can’t train or have 100% control is all situations, so the more you can practice distractions when you are fully in control of the dog, the rewards, and the distractions, your pup will be more likely to make better decisions when distractions when you’re not ready one day!
I am attending an online @denise_fenzi scent detection course with my personal dogs, and decided to try it out with our Facilikitty too!
Mango is clicker conditioned and likes to work for her meals! I don’t know much about training cats for scent detection but it’s been fun to try out! She is learning the scent “Birch” just like my personal dogs!
Dayschool with Wild at Heart Canine Academy looks a little different than your average mainstream doggie daycare!
While we do have playtime between dogs, we also focus on many other important factors:
🧠 Mindset- a calm dog makes better decisions. If a dog is overaroused it may lead to pushy interactions and even negative play
🧠 Impulse control- We need to be able to call dogs away from eachother, dropped food, a stick they found, etc. Sometimes, it’s not always play time just because another dog is nearby or a new person comes into the room
🧠 Mental Exercise- We hear often how people’s dogs can exercise for hours but not calm down! This can be because their brain was not exercised and therefore cannot turn off!
🧠 Physical Exercise- It’s important to get daily exercise for your pup for overall health and well being! In addition to mental exercise, these are great ways of fulfilling your pup!
Train Demon with me!
Training and fun can go hand in hand! Demon loves working for his ball and has built up to long durations and multiple behaviors between rewards! Our favorite sessions are the impromptu ones between appointments or if I only have a few minutes to spare as I don’t worry about the little things as much and just have fun!
I love his expressions!
💨Sordy about the loud wind!🍃
Merry Christmas from Wild at Heart Canine Academy ❤️🎄🎁
Anyone else play Musical Place?
We love generalizing the place command to other surfaces! This is good for confidence building, and learning that place isn’t just a raised dog bed at the house! Here Chloe is practicing on raised wooden benches, turf covered platforms, we even have drain covers, metal benches, textured plastic tables, and more!
Do you practice Place on different kinds of surfaces?
Mary Kate had her first session leading to wear a muzzle today! The goal is for dogs to enjoy wearing go their muzzles, so that the muzzle is not only a trigger for a stressful event!
For example: If your dog does best wearing a muzzle in a vet office, don’t just put the muzzle on when you get to the vet. Instead, put the muzzle on before leaving your house,l for the appt, wear the entire vet visit, and drive home before taking it off
You can teach your pup that wearing a muzzle means fun adventures like going for a walk or playing in a creek! Because of the type of muzzles that we like to use, your dog should be comfortable wearing it with room to pant, and can even have the ability to drink or take treats!
Even if your dog is not a bite risk, it’s a good idea to teach every dog how to comfortably wear a muzzle. That way if your dog ever gets hurt, your dog and the vet will both be safe!

Julep goes on an adventure!
Puppies have a Critical socialization period between 6-16 weeks of age and it’s REALLY important to get out and experience the world! Julep is not quite done with her shots so we are careful where she is being set down, I typically recommend avoiding popular parks on the grass, dog parks, and pet store floors. You can also wipe their feet after being on the grass to help!
I brought Julep’s breakfast, which she got to earn any time she checked in with me around distractions, followed me around, or overcame something new!
Novel Sights, sounds, smells, people, places and pets are great things to expose your puppy to! They do not always have to interact with these new things, but it is important that they start to learn that these things can equal fun and food! This can help build a curious and confident adult dog later on
Interested in Julep’s adventure? Send me an email to hanna@wahcanineacademy I’d you’d like to be added to our online community for behind the scenes training with Julep!
Doorway manners!
Po is new to our training program and is an excitable corgi! He loves to sprint up to doorways and be the first one out and once he is outside he is go-go-go searching for something to look at or chase.
We practice a lot of calm at doorways so that we can influence a calmer mindset on our walks as well. If Po is racing to the door, and is super amped up as he leaves, this will lead to a super amped up walk too with less engagement and more pulling.
Instead, we take our time at doorways. If he races towards the door we go in the opposite direction. If he walks nicely to the door then we can approach it closer. If he has trouble sitting we might make him leave the doorway and start over. Once the door is open we still don’t want it to be a race to be the first out of there so we repeat these steps even with the door wide open! The goal is to learn that major doorways are a trigger for engagement with the handler and calm in order to go to the next step: a walk, a bathroom break, etc.
If your dog likes to dart out of doors and into the street, or if you are struggling with arousal and reactivity on your walk, or just want to add calm and structure into your dog’s life, this is great to practice!
Benelli is best friends with Willow and Valko! I love how well they get along, however it is important to teach friendly dogs how to listen to their humans when their friends are around! We did a small social session right before this training, which can be difficult to reel her attention back to me at first, and we ended with another social session. Listening to me does not always mean play time is completely over!
This can also be really important to practice if you have a multi dog household! It doesn’t always have be play time when all of the dogs are in the living room together, and just because you tell one dog “free” doesn’t mean everyone is free! In this video I was also using their individual names followed by the command to let them know which dog I was talking to each time.
