Teddy is such an angel that he has a little halo this evening 🩷
Were gearing up for a few hot days coming up! Frozen treats are being made, fans are being charged, and extra shade coverings are being put up again.
We love freezing veggies and fruits in a bunt pan and letting our crews pick at it throughout the day. Extra hydration and enrichment!
What do you do to keep everyone cool on hot days? Leave tips and tricks in the comments!
Treasured moments with Mellow and Sage.
Binx is gearing up for another round of baling hay! Once the weather is right, we'll be doing our second cutting. This is imperative for our sheep for the winter! We're so grateful for the hay equipment that was donated, and some that we're borrowing, to get this done every year. With quality hay prices being at $5/$6 + a bale, being able to do it ourselves saves us so much on feed costs!
Hope is trying out some new head attire. Isn't she lovely!
Miley and Lo ❤️
Happy cat day from Bell, Ghost, Binx and Bones! All ferals who found comfort at our sanctuary, either through adoption or by chance ❤️
Not Sunday Snoots, but I wanted to share this sweet picture from a couple weeks ago of Dexter looking out to his sister as he relaxes. Remember to Be Like Dexter and enjoy some relaxation today! Maybe even enjoy a nice mud spa!
Baby Basil ❤️
She is beauty. She is grace. Her b***y takes up all the space.
Summer is following his passion of becoming a judge for the Olympic swim team!
Sunday snoots with Raisin and Nutmeg! These girls need to see the vet this week and we could really use your help to cover their care!! We haven't recouped from Summer's last vet visit of 346, and we think the girls bill will be around the same if not more due to potentially needing bloodwork.
Please help if you can!
Raisins color is a bit pale and she is acting off recently.
Nutmeg has a feather growth issue we thought would be resolved with a less stressful environment but it has not.
Both girls have had multiple in-house checks for anything obvious that we can check at home with nothing out of the ordinary, but we know our girls and there's definitely something we're missing.
Please help these girls and help us continue to provide them excellent care!
Mr. Da-hooooos enjoying some fresh water in the wallow!
Mud boops from Dottie are a daily occurrence around here!
Happy 3rd birthday Duncan!!! It feels like just yesterday you were a wild little 6 month old, unneutred, with a ring in your nose to stop you from living your best life.
And now you are! We're so lucky to have been able to spend the last 2.5 years with you and hope for so many more!
Love you Dunki Doos ❤️
Help our residents stay cooler during the heat! We're in need of a few fans, sun shades, and other things for the coops!
If you're able to, check out our Amazon wishlist and send Summer some gifts! Link is below and in our bio!
The day was spent tearing things down, building things up, and everything is an absolute mess but our coop is in place! Thank you Dylan for finishing this up for us! We'll be adding metal at a later time, but for now it's so wonderful to have this done!
Tomorrow we will be working on the run and the inside of the coop so we can get Summer and Captain's girls outside! We have to divide the coop and run because of Summers size, it's too dangerous to have smaller birds in with him. We're so looking forward to having everyone out together and in a more natural environment! We love having house chickens, but they definitely want to be back out!
We received the most beautiful card from our vet who took care of Sterling. They made a donation in her honor to UofI where we have taken Duncan several times. We're so grateful for their care for Sterling even after she was gone.
Binx wasn't happy to have his nap interrupted!
We're watching the ongoing storms here in Lee County, IL, but we think the worst has passed. We're expecting rain all night and the pastures are already all flooded, but everyone is safe and snoozin in the barn and coop!
Sending all our love to those who are dealing with storm damage!
Sunday snoots with Hope!
We have AMAZING news from Summer's bloodwork! His internal organs all showed normal levels, and he's just a bit low on phosphorus and calcium, which we can easily supplement to get those levels up.
This is incredible news because Summer is a Cornish cross rooster, and at 3 years old is considered a senior. His breed is prone to heart issues (and so many other issues) because of breeding. We were really expecting bad news with his bloodwork but we are relieved that our boy is healthy!
Thank you to our amazing vet for treating Summer with the best care!
To help us continue to help souls like Summer, please consider helping with his medical costs!
Summer is back home and doing well! We ran a f***l, did bloodwork, and has an overall physical! Everyone was in wonder of his size and we had some good conversations about his breed and veganism.
Family pasture time with Sugar, Rosemary, and Sage!
Sunday Snoots of Sage peaking in the trailer! We started conditioning last week, but it's now having some repairs done to make sure it's 100% safe to transport these precious souls.
We're still trying to meet our goal to pay off this trailer! Any support would greatly help! Givebutter.com/Freedomruntrailer
Aside from the trailer, we've been working on our new coop for Summer and Captain's girls. This coop will be seperated in the middle and go out to seperate runs. Summer can't be with other chicken breeds due to his size, which is why we were so happy to rescue Sterling. We don't want Summer to he alone, and Captain's girls didn't do well integrating into Rex's crew and we're being bullied, so this was the perfect solution so no one will have to be alone. Summer is doing well and has a vet appointment next week for a check up.
Huge thank you to Dylan for always helping with any project we have going on, and bringing his much needed carpentry skills!
Thank you to Nathan for the plywood donation, and a donor last winter who contributed to this coop as well! We're finally able to do it and couldn't complete this without all of you!
"Move Dottie, I wanna see my new trailer!"
We are only need 745 to meet our match this afternoon!! We're SO CLOSE and Dexter is SO excited to have his own trailer... just don't tell him he has to share it with his adopted siblings!
We would like to send everyone who donates some stickers and personal thank you cards from our residents, so please keep it coming!
Link is in the comments! Please share and support this huge need for our residents!
We have a 1k match to help reach our goal by tomorrow! Every bit helps, and we're so close to being able to cover the entire trailer! Help us meet our match by tomorrow at 3pm when we pick it up!
🚨 We Need YOUR Help!! 🚨
Freedom Run friends!! We desperately need you RIGHT NOW! It's an emergency!!!!
We found it....the most perfect trailer we could possibly want for our Freedom Run residents!! But here's the catch...
I have to go purchase it TOMORROW 😬 But we still need 2350 to get it. You can see why we need your help! Dexter really needs to get to the vet asap to have his wounds assessed and this trailer is just what we need to get our sweer baby boy help. We weren't able to get Dex loaded in our friends trailer today and plan to train everyone to see the trailer in a possitive light once we have it. We also have upcoming needs for both Hope & Duncan to get to the vet. You can see why it's so important we don't miss out on this trailer!!
I know 2350 sounds like a lot. But if everyone seeing this could chip in even just a little and then share this post, I just know we can do it!!! Will you help!?
Link to help & pic of our dream trailer (for our budget) in the comments!
The results from Sterling's necropsy showed that she was septic and died of peritonitis and that there was nothing we could have done at that point because it happened so quickly.
Sterling lived a wonderful 8 months with us and with Summer. They loved each other so much that we dubbed them "the love birds". Summer is doing okay today, we brought in some of our flock to be next to him in their own enclosure. We had planned to build the love birds a coop yesterday which didn't happen, but we still plan to do that Sunday so Summer can be an outdoor boy and at least see and hear more of his feathered friends. The next week will bring a lot of changes for us with our flocks and integrations, along with some issues we're having with Hope and Captain's crew that we'll share more on later.
If anyone would like to volunteer some time to sit with Summer and our other feathered residents to comfort them, we would love to have you and it would mean so much to our little family members who have gone through so much trauma in the past few weeks.
Sterling had her vet appointment. Her heart and lungs sounded okay but she was in distress which was treated with oxygen and she perked up a lot. After the exam we decided on a care plan, got blood drawn to be sent off, and left with meds to treat her ongoing vent gleet issue.
I was petting Sterling's head in the passenger seat as we were driving when she suddenly went limp. I'll spare further details, but we rushed back to the vet and they tried to bring her back but couldn't. Sterling passed away right before my eyes. She's gone.
We're getting a necropsy done to find out what happened, and we're keeping a close eye on Summer, her mate, and giving him all the extra lovings. He was alone before Sterling came into life and so worried on how he'll be without her. He has a wellness check in 2 weeks but is healthy overall but we're keeping a close eye on hos behavior.
I love you, sweet girl. We'll see you again ❤️

You may not realize, but Sanctuary's are so often criticized and belittled for the work we do. We are often met with confused faces, smirks of humor, or the endless question of "but what do you _use_ them for", as if it was unimaginable that someone could simply live their life without being exploited. Some days it's easy to brush past with the hopes that we're planting seeds to promote animal welfare. Most days it's emotionally draining and we deal with heavy compassion fatigue. To know they could have met the most horrifying fate haunts us whenever someone compares them to a meal or a commodity. But these pictured moments... these beautiful, precious moments that we share with our rescues... they bring us back to peace, and we would never give up these moments for anything in the world. Unconditional love doesn't begin to describe how we feel about every single one of our residents. They're our children, our family. They're who we fight for, and who we live for. #NationalNonprofitDay
Today's Sunday Snoots are brought to you by baby Dexter's snoot! This was the day I picked him up from Purdue. We immediately fell in love with his calm gentle soul, and he settled right in as if to say "okay, let's go home mom", and slept the whole way home. I can't believe this was two years ago.
Everyone is doing okay today despite the heat. We're closing monitoring everyone, and have given out fresh water and watered down runs and wallows this afternoon. Can't wait for cooler weather tomorrow! In the meantime, enjoy Miley, Dottie and Hope having a little visit from last week!
Did you know that pigs need sunscreen in the summer months? Especially our pink piggies Hope and Dexter! This is Dexter saying "thanks mom" after his ears and back were sprayed down with our favorite cruelty free sunscreen! Mud acts as a natural sunscreen for them, but most times their backs and behind their ears need extra covereage.
Thank you so much to Tatiana for volunteering today! We were able to bring Summer, Lo, Winter and Nutmeg outside in their run and work on getting more things in place for them!
Duncan is blowing his coat and turning into a hippo! He's doing so good at getting around and moving more! He's definitely lost a few pounds in a good way and we're excited to get him to where he needs to be.
Summer is doing really well and isn't showing any signs of depression after losing Sterling. We miss our girl so much, but we're glad that Summer is doing well. Summer has a vet appointment on Wednesday where we'll be getting bloodwork done and a full physical to make sure hes as healthy as he appears! This is just a wellness check, but Summer is 3 years old and fate isn't on his side due to his breed. Cornish crosses are bred to be killed at 6 WEEKS old, and their bodies have been bred and modified to grow more quickly than their legs can carry them, and more quickly than their organs cam properly develop. Summer is a string healthy boy and we've been lucky enough to have raised him from a baby when he was found wounded in an apartment complex! We're so happy to have found a vet who will be treat our bestest boy like the individual that he is!
We did not hit our match but there's still time to help us reach our goal! We raised 265 towards the match (1k) and in total we are only 890 away from our entire goal!!! We brought home the trailer today which is so incredible! But we need to recoup those funds QUICKLY for upcoming vet care needs for Dexter, Hope, and possibly Duncan. Please keep sharing, donating, and commenting on our post so they continue to reach people! Tomorrow if the weather isn't too hot, we start training with positive reinforcement to load in and out of the trailer! We can't wait to share what you've all made possible!
We're picking up the trailer TODAY and have 945 left to meet our match as of last night! We're so excited and relieved to finally be able to get this for our larger residents. We can't put into words how incredibly thankful we are to everyone who has supported us and shared our plea for help, and we know we can meet our match by this afternoon but we need your help! When a group of people who love animals come together for a shared cause, nothing is impossible! Please keep the momentum going so we can cover the whole trailer when we pick it up today!
Dexter's checklist: ✅️ Spa treatments ✅️ Stuffed unicorn pillows ❌️ Travel Trailer We still need to raise funds for our trailer! Dexter and Duncan were roughhousing and Dexter got a wound on his shoulder. We treat these at home, but this one isn't healing like it should and we're very concerned for our little lover boy. He has a vet appointment tomorrow afternoon that we are borrowing a trailer to transport him in, but we're really asking a lot from our friends kindness because they also need their trailer tomorrow! We really need our own. We've lost out on two due to lack of funds. Please share, spread the word, and help us meet our goal! Dexter needs you! I was refreshing the piggies water when Dottie decided that this will absolutely not do, and that the trough shall be used as a bathtub from now on.... She does make the cutest little bathtub piggy though ❤️
With everything going on lately, our focus has been heavily on our bird residents. But we wanted to share our trailer fundraiser for those who may have missed it! We have some anticipated needs for Hope coming up where she'll need to go to Purdue Vet for an MRI to get some imagining on her spine. It's nothing urgent yet but with your help, we can get the trailer before it may become urgent! We knew we would eventually be dealing with health issues with Hope and Dexter especially with them jumping from a truck on the highway as babies to save their own lives from the meat industry, and we are so thankful for all of you to help support them! The trailer we had our eye on sold already, but we have two others we found with the same price range! They're both smaller but will still work well. If you can't donate, please share, comment, and spread the word! Www.givebutter.com/freedomruntrailer We have some exciting news about our chicken crews coming up later this week so make sure you're following up for that!
Sunday Snoots with Lo! We decided to reschedule pur Open Barn Day this Saturday, future day TBD. We have a lot of projects planned for this week that were on hold because of the heat last week, so we need to focus on those projects for our residents, but we will announce a new date in a couple of weeks!
We had an amazing day with an amazing visitor! We are so grateful for our friend Brandy who has been part of the sanctuary family for some time and has a special bond with Dottie girl ❤️ this visit meant so much to us after what we've been going through these last few weeks. Brandy brought some amazing donations including lots of fruits&veggies, snacks for the chickens, tarps, and vegan snacks for the humans! A big thing was poultry netting and an electric charger, which we've already put up to better protect our flock from everything that may wander by in the night. I'm honestly looking forward to getting some sleep now! Thank you so so much Brandy! Keep being an amazing human.
We're expecting a super hot day tomorrow and are freezing treats, charging small fans, adding more regular fans, and freshening everyone's water! We're so happy to say that the weather for Open Barn day next weekend is looking beautiful so far! Sign up using our new link! https://givebutter.com/3H4iTY
