Just received word that Brody has crossed over.
He was supposed to stay with us this weekend.
He had been coming to use for 1.5 years and we always enjoyed having him stay in our home.
We are all sad that he is gone but grateful that his family chose us to care for him when they needed us.

It turned to summer fast. The temps are rising and that means we are in Heat Protocol.
What is Heat Protocol at Cadet K9 Kamp?

1. We limit outside time to no more than 10-15 at a time. We still allow them to have plenty of time outside we just take at least an hour break in between to let them cool off, hydrate and rest. They are let out if they let us know they need to potty but then right back in until the next outdoor time.

We use the cooler times in early morning and nighttime to give them extended time outside.

2. We have more water bowls set up throughout the house and when we go out for playtime I will usually put a bowl of ice in the water bowls.

3. I will start making frozen treats for the pups this weekend. I mix ice, bananas, peanut butter and watermelon in a blender and freeze them to give them.

4. Certain breeds are more susceptible to heat related illnesses so those dogs are limited to no more than 5 minutes outside during the heat of the day.

5. We monitor their water intake as some pups will drink a ton of water when they are hot and it can induce vomiting. Giving the frozen treats when they are outside and when they come in help with this.

6. We do not take dogs on walks on hot days, the pavement is hot and if it is too hot for you to walk barefoot on it then it is too hot for their sensitive paws.

Safety is always a priority in our home for the humans and the pups.

Meet Max!

Max is so loved by our family. His favorite person is my son and they spend hours cuddling in the big chair and playing outside.
He is curious, loves treats, likes to take several naps, needs to be with humans, likes to observe me when I cook, and loves to look out the front window.
Max is quite photogenic and has a beautiful red coat.
We are so glad his family chose to share him with us. He is part of our family when he is here, as are all of the dogs that stay with us.
When they come here they know there will always be a human with them and they form strong bonds with all of us. They also bond with the other dogs here as we have a lot of regulars that come to us often so they get to know each other and it is so sweet when they come and see a dog friend that they love.
We are so grateful for all of our clients and that w get to share our home and lives with so many fur friends!!

Today our hearts are broken as we heard from Porsha’s Mom this morning that she has passed.
Porsha started coming over a year ago and not only did she come for daycare 2-3 days a week she had many longer stays, one being 6 weeks. To say she was a part of our family is an understatement. She was quirky and hated being left alone in a room, she would howl/whine loudly and it drove us crazy sometimes but we loved her so much. She was very bonded to Jim and Caleb but loved to cuddle with me as well. I just don’t sit down as much as they do so she preferred them. She slept with Jim in his bed and adored him.
She hasn’t been doing well the last few months and when she was here Thursday I saw a huge change as I hadn’t seen her in two weeks. She was supposed to come for daycare today.
When she left the other day, Caleb was upset that he didn’t get to say goodbye and has been waiting for her to come over for cuddles today. I haven’t told him yet as it will break his heart.
I love you Queen Porsha and will miss you so much.

INFO ON KENNEL COUGH

~What Is Kennel Cough?

Kennel cough refers to "any infectious or contagious condition of dogs where coughing is one of the major clinical signs.

It is also known as "infectious tracheobronchitis," and tracheobronchitis describes the location of the infection in the trachea (or "windpipe") and bronchial tubes.

Kennel cough is often referred to as the Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) because it can be caused by a number of viruses and bacteria.

These can include the adenovirus type-2 (distinct from the adenovirus type-1 that causes infectious hepatitis), parainfluenza virus, canine coronavirus, and the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica, the veterinarians said.

~Symptoms of Kennel Cough

Below are some of the common symptoms of kennel cough:

•A loud cough (often described as a "goose honk")
•Runny eyes and nose
•Swollen tonsils
•Wheezing
•Lack of appetite
•Depressed behavior
•Most dogs with infectious tracheobronchitis will cough when the throat is rubbed or palpated, or during and after exercise.

Often, the hacking cough caused by kennel cough will persist for several weeks after the infection."

~How Contagious Is Kennel Cough?

Kennel cough is very contagious and your pup can be infected if it comes into contact with an infected dog.
The disease has been named the kennel cough because it is often seen soon after dogs have been housed together in kennels.

⭐️However, the infection can be spread by casual contact such as sniffing each other when on a walk, playing, or sharing water dishes.

Factors such as stress, cold temperatures, exposure to dust and crowded conditions may raise your dog's risk of getting infected, according to Ward and Panning.

Dogs with kennel cough may not appear to be sick in the early stages of the condition but they can still infect other pups, warns the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

~Treatment for Kennel Cough

There are no specific treatments for viral infections.
However, many of the condition's more severe symptoms are due to bacterial-related causes, so antibiotics are useful against the Bordetella bronchiseptica bacterium.

Most infections resolve within one to three weeks, but some cases may require prolonged treatment. Mild symptoms may linger for several weeks even when the bacteria have been eliminated.

Cough suppressants and anti-inflammatory medicines may also provide relief in some instances. But your veterinarian can help determine the best treatment for your dog.

Vaccines are also available for the kennel cough, but not all dogs need to be vaccinated, and the vaccine does not protect against all viral or bacterial sources that can lead to Kennel Cough so getting the vaccine provides protection against certain a strains. Speak to your veterinarian about whether your dog should get the kennel cough vaccine, advised the AVMA.

Happy Thanksgiving Week!
We are so thankful for the amazing clients we have that choose Cadet K9 Kamp for their fur babies! We love sharing our home with them and giving our clients peace of mind when they are traveling, knowing their pups are in a loving and safe home where they are treated like members of our family.
They also make pup friends and our regulars het so excited when they come and can’t wait to get inside and see who is here!

We have a couple of small dogs that don’t like to be out back when the big dogs are wanting to play so we take them out for one on one time in the front yard to walk around, watch people walking, cars going by and to go potty. When the bigger dogs come inside we let the little ones have the yard to themselves.

Molly stayed last with us in July. Right before her stay she has a swollen lymph node removed and during her stay her sweet parents messaged to let us know that she had been diagnosed with Lymphoma.
Some of these pictures were taken during that stay. I had been checking in with her mom to see how she was doing and got a message last night that Molly passed peacefully with her parents by here side on October 21st.
Molly was a sweet sweet girl. Not rambunctious and preferred to be near the humans, either on the couch with us or on the floor at our feet. Caleb loved how much she loved to be near him and she brought so much love and joy to our home.
We have many loyal clients that bring their dogs to us every time they are out of town and they become part of our family. We get to love so many dogs and their family’s. It is a great blessing but it also means we get our hearts broken often when they pass over.
There were tears and heartbreak when we found out about our sweet Molly as there is when any of “our” pups leave this world.
We are grateful that her parents shared her with us and she will be missed by our whole family.

What a great bunch of fur friends to spend our weekend with!!
These are all regular pups that have been coming for a while and we are so grateful that when their parents need someone to love and care for their fur babies, they choose us, and they always know that we have a spot for our regular pups so they never have to worry about finding the care their pups need and deserve when emergencies or last minute things come up!
