… “blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog.”
Taking in this boy has changed our life entirely. You know a puppy needs to be let out every few hours, taught “sit, stay, come” along with all else. Has to be fed multiple times a day to sustain proper growth. The whole 9 you know? And everyone shares the journey of the puppy stage, “ohhh would you just look at him/her , aren’t they just so cuteeeee” … but no one talks about this stage.
The senior stage.
The old dog stage.
The all greys stage.
The real golden age stage.
It’s rough. Especially when you venture into a giant breed. They just age so differently compared to a Labrador or even a Chihuahua . They become brittle so fast. So brittle that if the wind blew just right, their frail body will give in and lay down on the spot.
So frail that what may of been walks for hours, turns to only being able to last moments.
They may strain so much to sit down or to get up that they often have an accident on themselves or on what’s around them. - male doggy diapers have sure been our aid with the frequent urination.
They can’t help it.
They can’t help that this once so puppy like body kept up with everything they attempted, now continuously fails them with such minimal effort.
They can’t help that they need to be let out to go to the bathroom just as much almost as that fresh 8 week old puppy so eagerly trying to appease its new owner to delight. They often times are on a handful of medications to be able to complete a day, or battle a senior dog illness.
They can’t help it.
I really encourage you , that if you get a dog, or a pet of any kind , that you do your absolute best to see it through to the end.
Imagine going through so much at such an old age, and having to mend an unsteady heart from such uprooting. A dog this age, this size, this breed; so rarely reaches this faze in life.
He honestly is a prized possession. In the short time he has been within my care, we have done our absolute best to make his limited time as comfortable as possible. These animals love with every ounce they have. They don’t have anything else to offer , but love!
I just want to remind everyone as we edge closer to the end of this holiday season- a dog or an animal period is a true life long commitment.
It’s a bumpy road- but boy is it worth it!
Happy holidays everyone. 🎄
