EHV-1 Outbreak Update April 6th
Everyone at SVEC wants the Michigan equine community to be informed and to stay healthy during this outbreak. The EHV-1 virus (respiratory form) has been detected in two horses at one farm in Saginaw County and two horses at one farm in Livingston County.
We are not accepting appointments for horses who have been directly or indirectly exposed to the virus, furthermore, none of the EHV-1 positive or suspect horses have been at Saginaw Valley Equine Clinic.
SVEC is absolutely recommending to vaccinate horses for EHV-1 and we are currently using the most up to date Flu/Rhino vaccine. If we do encounter any horse displaying symptoms of EHV-1 and requires more than supportive care on the farm, we are referring these cases to an isolation equipped hospital such as MSU's VTH.
If you believe your horse has been in contact with EHV-1, isolate the horse from nose to nose contact with other horses, monitor re**al temperature twice daily, and do not allow the horse to leave your property or new horses to enter your property for 28 days.
