This is Pickles' first hunt in snow. Although it was accidental as I threw the ball too far to the right and it sunk deep into the powder, I still couldn't help myself when I pulled out my phone to start filming him as he worked.

Just like it's easier to smell food when it's hot, and harder to smell food when it's frozen, odor from any source (narcotics, explosives, articles, and scent from live/deceased people) acts the same way. In the snow, scent actsike it's been frozen and zipped up tight in several ziplock bags. It makes things extremely difficult for the dog.

One of the things I look for when I'm testing a dog for dual purpose work is their hunt drive. It doesn't bother me, when I'm testing the dog, if the dog doesn't end up finding the source.

The main aspect of hunt drive that I look for is that the dog persists and NEVER gives up, leaving me to be the one to end it if necessary.

That said, I almost called Pickles off this hunt because I was frozen during this video.

BUT!!!!!

HE threw a COB (change of behavior) that I noted verbally to the audience, so I was relieved because at that point I knew it was a matter of a very short amount of time before he located his ball.

So, I stuck around until he did, and I was correct that he located it very shortly afterward his COB.

That was amazing to watch. He is so solid with his nose work. He never gave up, either, despite how cold I knew he was!

Good job, Saint Picks!

Is a place where I teach your dog not only regarding commands like sit, come, down, heel, etc., but I also teach your dog to p*e and p**p on command.

Going to the bathroom on command is extremely useful especially before a long training day (like now), before long road trips, before bedtime, etc.- the list goes on and on.

If you train with me, , you get everything!

Workin' teams deep into the night.

The best part about being a good canine trainer and knowing how to work in police canine world is knowing the importance of

always

Always

ALWAYS

finding a new building to use or finding new places in which to train.

The worst you can do is use the same training location over and over again -

If I need to tell you this, we have a problem:

The dogs get used to it and when it becomes too repetitive, the lack of exposure training a new environment can be life-threatening to the handler and this dog.

This doesn't give me, as a trainer, the opportunity to troubleshoot any issues dogs might have that showcase themselves through different locations.

If the place in which you train doesn't have some environmental aspect that scares a young or new dog, and you're not aware of this and you don't train the dog out of it,

You're screwed if a suspect runs from the police K9 and suddenly the dogs terrified of that aspect of the environment (and it wasn't something you could work the dog through in training) you're screwed.

That's what training is for.

As a police K9 trainer, it is your job to be prepared with at least 10 locations to rotate through before you even take the job as a trainer .

You must never allow your handlers and dogs to become complacent, which derives from training in the same location (or 2) week after week.

Get out there and make connections.

Meet people.

Use their buildings and their spaces.

As a trainer, don't be lazy. Get off your ass and get after it. It's your DUTY to train in a way that keeps your handlers safe.

Working the boys in their DFR responses to odor.

Although it is not super necessary in explosives, it's very helpful in narcotics detection.

Student Spotlight! Rio is a 3 year old, repeat customer! Springer Spaniel Rio, and his family saw me back in 2017 when he was a baby. They did very well, and came back again for a refresher-course earlier this year in 2021. Rio and his family relearned timing of rewards and refined training concepts helping him fly past his initial stage of graduation, years ago. Good to see you again, Rio!

Student Spotlight! Snickers is only 8 months old and graduated from my training program in March of 2021. Her parents brought her to me in February of 2021 (yes, only one month prior!) asking for help in obedience and basic house manners. Snickers and her family put in the work and, only 6 sessions later, graduated with flying colors! Welcome to Beth's K9 training family, Snickers!

Student Spotlight! This is Larry, a 3 year old German Shepherd who grew up in West Poland. He is a West German show line German Shepherd, and, in March 2021, Beth's K9 training and Banks-Haus German Shepherds went out of California to see Larry and test him as a product for protection training and as the new stud for Banks-Haus German Shepherds. Student Spotlight! This week's features one of my current students. This pup is one of the most rare I have ever met, with such complexity in his mind! He is training with me as a protection dog; biting hard and deep, with pushing grips. He is stable as well, so you can pet and him even right after bitework training! This stability makes him an exceptional family pet that is capable of protecting his people. Say hello to the newest member of Beth's K9 training family!
