The Plott Hound is North Carolina’s official state dog and is famous for its bravery, stamina, and determination in the hunt. Originally bred to track big game like wild boar and bear, this breed is known for its athletic build and striking brindle coat.

📏 Size & Build:
Males: 50–60 lbs | Females: 40–55 lbs
Lean, muscular, and built for endurance in rugged terrain

🧠 Temperament:
✔️ Loyal and devoted to their family
✔️ Intelligent and confident, but can be independent
✔️ Friendly with people but may be cautious with strangers

🏃 Exercise Needs:
High energy — thrives with daily vigorous exercise, hikes, and plenty of space to roam
Their strong noses love scent games and tracking activities

🛡️ Health Considerations:
Generally a hardy breed, but watch for hip dysplasia and ear infections
Regular exercise is key to keeping them happy and balanced

❄️ Fun Fact:
The Plott Hound is the only coonhound breed that does not trace its roots back to foxhounds — instead, it descends from German hunting dogs brought to the U.S. in the 1700s!

🚨 Feature Friday: Urethral Obstruction in Male Cats 🚨
This week’s feature isn’t just cute—it’s critical.
We’re highlighting a life-threatening emergency we see far too often: Urethral Obstruction in male cats.

🧠 What is it?
It’s when a cat's urethra (the tube that carries urine) becomes blocked, often by crystals, mucus, or small stones—making them unable to urinate.

😿 What to watch for:
🔸 Straining to urinate
🔸 Frequent trips to the litter box with little/no output
🔸 Vocalizing in pain
🔸 Lethargy or vomiting
🔸 Hiding or behavior changes

⏱ Why it's an emergency:
A blocked bladder can lead to kidney failure, bladder rupture, or even death within 24–48 hours.

🩺 Treatment:
Requires immediate veterinary intervention—often including catheterization, IV fluids, and hospitalization.

💡 Prevention Tip:
Ensure your cat drinks plenty of water, feed a vet-recommended diet, and keep stress low—especially in multi-cat homes.

If you notice any of these signs, call us immediately.
This condition can’t wait!

🐾 Tail Talk Tuesday – Meet the Alaskan Malamute! 🐾

The Alaskan Malamute is a majestic, strong, and affectionate breed originally developed to pull heavy sleds through harsh Arctic conditions. Known for their wolf-like appearance and thick double coat, these gentle giants are both hard workers and loyal companions.

📏 Size & Build:

Males: 85–100 lbs | Females: 75–85 lbs

Powerful, sturdy frame built for endurance, not speed

🧠 Temperament:

Friendly and affectionate with family

Intelligent and independent — they love to think for themselves!

Great with older children but need supervision around small pets due to a high prey drive

🏃‍♂️ Exercise Needs:

HIGH energy — requires daily vigorous exercise and mental stimulation

Activities like hiking, pulling carts, or agility training keep them happy and healthy

🛡️ Health Considerations:

Prone to hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and bloat (GDV)

Thick coat requires regular grooming to manage shedding and prevent matting

❄️ Fun Fact:
Malamutes were a crucial part of the 1925 Nome serum run — though Siberian Huskies got most of the fame, these strong dogs were essential in hauling life-saving medicine across Alaska’s frozen terrain.
