π―π―π―πππ ABSOLUTELY SPOT-ON! A must read post from SpiritDog Training!
You will often hear me speaking about how crucial it is to KNOW WHAT A BREED WAS CREATED FOR before you decide to bring it home. Yes, training and proper exposure to new situations is key. But love, treats and comfy couches to lay on don't change a dog's genetics and how powerful they are.
I am constantly shocked at how many people I encounter who get a breed of dog without having any idea what it was bred for. When I explain it to them, they typically have a lightbulb moment of sorts, and suddenly so much of their pup's behavior makes sense. I think one of the biggest shockers I encountered was someone who didnt know that Siberian Huskies are high intensity dogs (originally bred to run and pull sleds for great distances, essentially endurance racers,) rather they thought they were laid back, low key couch companions!
Understanding what a breed was created for is crucial to understanding their behavior and why they do what they do. It is your road map for life with that breed of dog. Don't embark on a 10-15+ year trip, er, commitment, without a road map! πΎ
