Did you ever notice that when you scratch a particular spot on your puppy’s belly the hind paw starts moving?
This is called the Dog Scratch Reflex which is an involuntary response that protects dogs from fleas, ticks and other irritations! 🐾 🐾

A cluster of nerves under the skin,
making up the Dog Tickle Spot are activated and send a message to the hind leg, via the spinal cord, to start kicking in an attempt to dislodge the source of irritation.

Nothing beats a refreshing dip in the pool after a hot 🥵 day!
Swimming 🏊 is great exercise for dogs - a 10 min swim is as much exercise as a 40 min walk! It is also easier on the joints!

All our dogs are introduced to the water under supervision as early as 8-9 weeks to ensure they know how to swim and get out in case they fall in. Some of them love ❤️ the pool, others tolerate it.

Our blue merle Jack LOVES the water and every afternoon-particularly after running in the yard-he slides into the pool to cool off.

Little Rey seems to have also acquired a taste for an afternoon swim!

Love hearing from our puppies’ families!
Recently we brought Solo to his new home in California. He and his new dog-mom are bonding well. He was introduced to his new dog sister, a 8 year old Corgi who belongs to his new human sister.
How to introduce a new puppy to a dog already in the home:

Start slowly
Puppies are full of energy and can tire out older dogs, who may get overwhelmed & lash out.

Choose neutral ground - Dogs are territorial, so start in an unfamiliar quiet place like a park

Keep interactions short and brief and frequent.

Use positive reinforcement- Reward the dogs with praise and treats throughout the process so they associate each other with good things.

Manage energy levels- pause frequently to help them regulate energy levels.

Look for signs of stress - Dogs communicate their feelings through body language- watch for signs like yawning, lip licking, panting, or averted gaze. If you see these signs, give the dogs a break.

Make sure dogs have their vaccinations!

Although Solo has gotten two sets of his vaccinations, he is not completely protected, so he needs to have his socialization to different things in a safe manner - in this case, he is in a pet stroller while walking in the park!

Going Solo: Puppy concierge service to California. ❤️ Our puppies must be collected in person and are not shipped commercially. However, we provided a concierge service for a VIP client with our second pup, Solo, on this occasion. Our client has decided that he will retain his call name, Solo! 💞
Even though Solo has an excellent temperament, he was completely on his best behavior on his flight to San Francisco wooing several passers-by on the plane and at airports.
Our expandable carrier allowed Solo to stretch out on the flight yet fulfils the airline’s takeoff and landing requirements 🛬

Puppy Bathing: When should I start? 💦
Puppies should be at least 8 weeks of age. Before that, they cannot regulate their body temperature and may get too cold, so wiping down with a warm wet cloth is sufficient
Avoid taking them to a professional groomer until their vaccinations are complete, generally about 4 months old.

Where to bathe your puppy 🚿
A sink or a tub works, or if you have a dog bath, that is great!

How do I bathe my puppy? 🤔
Get all supplies ready first…
Treats, dog shampoo, towels, nonslip mat, hair dryer! Some helping hands may be helpful the first few times. 🙌
Check the water temperature is stable and not too hot before wetting puppy down and applying shampoo.
Scrub gently, avoiding the puppy’s head, then rinse well, directing water away from the head and ears 🐶 and towel dry.
Not all puppies will appreciate a hair dryer, but introducing it early on a low fan and cool setting will help acclimate the puppy.

HELPFUL TIP: We use a lick mat with (xylitol-free) peanut butter to keep the puppy distracted during the bath! 🧼

LEAVING DAY has arrived for the first of our puppies. After morning grooming and farewells by our junior handler and litter mates, Vader waits patiently anticipated his new family’s arrival.

Jack - our blue merle adult - is 4 years old and is such a good boy!
I was setting up the crate to start crate training the pups and he went right in!

Crate training is so important as there are many instances when a dog might need to be in a crate for a short time - traveling, at the vet, at the groomers, or just when it’s not safe to have them running around.

Our adult dogs go willingly in their crates although Jack is probably the happiest in it!

When is the best time? For puppies, ideally at 8 weeks!

Start by encouraging them to go in with treats or a favorite toy and saying the command word “crate” or “kennel” are common ones. Once the pup goes willingly, you can close the door but only for 10 min initially and then slowly increase. Once they are comfortable for 30 min, you can leave for a short time - 30 min to an hour - which you can gradually increase to longer times.

Never leave your pet more than 6 hours in the crate - young puppies shouldn’t be left more than 3-4 hours!

Once you are home, let them out and let them play!!!

We usually leave our adult dogs a favorite safe toy and a feeder type toy with them in the crate! Relaxing music also helps!
