3. The states with the highest density of diagnosed cases are Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas.
4. Prevention is possible via low-cost medication.
5. Treatment once contracted can cost thousands.
6. There is no approved treatment for cats.
7. Heartworm prevention can be started at 8 weeks.
