On a warm and early September day, our team received an urgent call: a Husky mother had been found with her nine newborn puppies. The pups, less than two weeks old, already faced a tough start. Born into the harsh reality of being strays, their survival odds were slim. Their mother, malnourished and exhausted, had done her best, but the dangers around them were overwhelming—cars, wild animals, and the harsh elements all posed serious threats.
Fortunately, we were able to bring them in, and both the mother and her puppies were named after Hispanic foods in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which coincided with their arrival. The mother was named Salsa. As Salsa and her puppies began to settle into their new home in the shelter’s maternity room, another threat emerged, disrupting their newfound peace. Hurricane Helene was rapidly strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico, and its projected path was heading straight for Georgia. Our team sprang into action, reaching out to the community for help in fostering our animals during the storm. What followed over the next few days was nothing short of remarkable. As we prepared for the hurricane, our phones and emails were flooded with messages from members of the community eager to offer support.
Salsa and her puppies were taken in by a member of our staff, where they received plenty of care and affection. Fortunately, the impact of Hurricane Helene in our area was minimal. However, the event served as a powerful reminder of the vital role a strong foster program plays in our work and the invaluable support we receive from those who offer temporary homes to our animals. Whether there's a storm or not, we are incredibly grateful for the many families who open their hearts and homes to our cats and dogs while they wait for their forever homes. We take great pride in ensuring these little ones are sent to their foster homes with everything they need: beds, medication, food, toys, and bowls.
