This press release is published at the request of the Florida Department of Health in Alachua County.

The Florida Department of Health in Alachua County (DOH-Alachua) is issuing a rabies alert in Alachua County in response to a confirmed case of rabies in a stray kitten that was found in an area west of High Springs off of County Road 236 on November 6, 2025. DOH-Alachua is monitoring rabies among wild animals in the area. All residents and visitors should be aware that rabies is currently present in the wild animal population.

People and domestic animals should always avoid physical contact with wild animals (e.g., raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, coyotes), which carry a higher risk of human exposure and a need for rabies post-exposure treatment. If you are exposed to rabies, receiving appropriate treatment after exposure will protect you from the risk of rabies.

This rabies alert is for 60 days and includes the following boundaries in Alachua County:

• Northern boundary: NW County Road 236
• Southern boundary: NW 190 Ave
• Eastern boundary: Interstate 75
• Western boundary: NW County Road 236

Take the following precautions to prevent rabies exposure:

• Immunize your pets and livestock based on your veterinarian’s recommended schedule.
• Keep pets under direct supervision and on a leash, and keep livestock secured on your property. If an animal bites your pet or livestock, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately and contact Alachua County Animal Control at 352-264-6870.
• Avoid contact with wild or stray animals. Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract them with outdoor pet food, open garbage cans, or other sources of food. If you have been bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal, seek medical attention, and report the injury to DOH-Alachua by calling 352-225-4167.
• Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home; instead, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
• Prevent wildlife, including bats, from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, schools, and other similar areas where they might come in contact with people and pets.

: Three thousand years ago, the Egyptians domesticated cats and set humanity on a long trajectory towards feline companionship and contention, treats and brushing and endless cans of tuna. The animals have also served myriad symbolic purposes, as objects of worship and fear. In recent years, cat videos and the emergence of the “childless cat lady” trope have brought the animals into the news cycle and further emphasized their association with the feminine. Whatever humans think about cats, in any given era, inevitably reveals something about us.

We have one, solid black female kitten (already spayed) needing a home. Trix was part of a community cat litter and all her littermates were claimed on FB. No rescues were interested bc they are full of black cats. She's a sweetheart and we're smitten with her, so she needs to go somewhere she'll be loved. Already spayed & due for her booster at OC next week, then she can go home. Please message me if you are interested in meeting her. 10-12wks-ish.

I also know of two more 6-8 month old kittens, and two adult females under 2 yrs in foster looking for homes, so if you don't want a small kitten, we can still hook you up. All will be fixed, with age-appropriate vax.

Help Puppy Hill Farm Animal Rescue if you can - they do great work. They can also always use more fosters, and they provide supplies, so even if all you have to give is love, step up 🥰

Happy Sunday! We're updating all our cat furniture to make disinfecting and cleaning easier while making sure everyone has plenty of spots to explore and snuggle up on.
