Are you excited to take your furry friend to the dog park for the first time? Visiting a dog park can be an incredibly rewarding experience for both you and your dog, as it provides them with the opportunity to socialize, exercise, and play with other dogs. However, it's important to ensure that your dog is prepared for this new environment, as it can be overwhelming for some dogs.

Here are some tips to make your dog's first trip to the dog park a positive experience for everyone involved:
Make sure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and parasite prevention. This is especially important when it comes to preventing the spread of illnesses and parasites among dogs.

Bring plenty of water and some toys to keep your dog occupied. Staying hydrated is essential, especially when your dog is running around and playing with other dogs.
Observe your dog's behavior and intervene if they become too rough or aggressive. Some dogs may become over-excited or anxious in new environments, so it's important to monitor their behavior and step in if necessary.
Respect other dogs and their owners. Remember that not all dogs are friendly or comfortable in crowded environments, so be aware of your surroundings and your dog's behavior at all times.

And most importantly, have fun and enjoy watching your pup make new friends! Dog parks can be a great way to socialize and bond with your dog, so make the most of this experience.

At Apawthecary, we understand the importance of keeping your dog happy, healthy, and safe. That's why we offer a range of all-natural CBD products that can help support your dog's overall wellness. From calming tinctures to joint support chews, we have everything your furry friend needs to live their best life🐾✨🌳

IS BLOWING W**D SMOKE INTO YOUR DOG'S EAR OKAY?

Yes, dogs can get high from blowing smoke in their ears. The dog’s ear is different from ours because it has no eardrum. It only has an auditory tube that goes straight to the cerebral cortex. Thus, if you blow smoke in the ear, they can get high.

BUT, it is not okay to blow w**d smoke into a dog's ear or expose them to any other form of secondhand smoke. This can be harmful to their health and may cause serious respiratory problems, among other issues. Additionally, dogs have a much more sensitive sense of smell than humans and can be overwhelmed by strong odors.

It is important to always prioritize the health and safety of your pets.

Have you heard the myth that chihuahuas help cure asthma?

The Aztecs thought this breed had the power to cure a variety of illnesses, including asthma. While this has been written about, there is little proof behind it.

A second reason some believe Chihuahuas can cure asthma is that they believe the dog absorbs it. This was first written about in 1956 folklore and later even a medical journal. Specifically, people believed that Chihuahuas would absorb asthma from children in the home.

Another reason many believe this is because Chihuahuas often sound like asthma sufferers.

Smaller dogs, in particular, are more likely to develop asthma.

So..... Chihuahuas do not help with asthma. There is no evidence that backs up the claim they do. Research shows no link between Chihuahuas and asthma relief. It’s an urban legend that Chihuahuas can help asthma sufferers by healing their symptoms.

02/03/2023

The fate of military working dogs (MWDs) when they are relieved of duty depends on several factors, such as their age, health, and behavioral characteristics. In general, there are a few different paths that a retired MWD can take:

Adoption: MWDs that are friendly and well-behaved are often made available for adoption to their handlers or other eligible individuals, such as law enforcement agencies or civilians who have a suitable living environment and experience with working dogs.

Retirement: Some MWDs that are unable to be adopted due to age or medical issues are retired to live with their handlers or other caretakers. In these cases, the military covers the cost of veterinary care for the remainder of the dog's life.

Euthanasia: In some cases, MWDs may be humanely euthanized due to severe medical or behavioral problems that make it impossible for them to be adopted or retired.

CBD has shown some promise in helping dogs with anxiety, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

HELP NEGLECTED HORSES

Help exists for starving, abused, neglected and stray horses. Most of the time, all you need to do is make one phone call to the sheriff’s department, police department, animal control, local humane society or an equine rescue. Your actions can help a neglected horse get the help he needs, but if you do the wrong thing, you may delay the process or, worse, get yourself embroiled in legal troubles.

Your impulse when you see a neglected horse may be to jump right in and help—and that’s laudable— but doing so can jeopardize the case. Your actions may even end up letting the owners get off the hook. To keep yourself safe, and to give law enforcement a chance to investigate and possibly prosecute the owners, here are some actions you need to avoid:
- Do not trespass.
- Do not feed or water neglected horses, even if you can do so without trespassing.
- Do not take the horse.
- Do not comment on social media.

Rescuing horses is not an easy business, and it can at times be quite dangerous. But it can also be tremendously rewarding, after you’ve worked with the appropriate officials and followed the established laws, to see suffering horses get the help they need and deserve.

Here are some tips for taking your dog to the beach for the first time:

- Gradual introduction: Allow your dog to get used to the sights, sounds, and smells of the beach gradually by starting from a distance and gradually moving closer to the water.

- Leash control: Keep your dog on a leash, especially if it's their first time at the beach, to prevent them from running into the water or getting lost.

- Hydration: Make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water to drink, as the saltwater can dehydrate them quickly.

- Foot protection: The hot sand and rocks at the beach can be hard on your dog's paws, so consider using dog-friendly paw wax or booties to protect their feet.

- Beach rules: Check with the local authorities to see if there are any specific rules or regulations regarding dogs on the beach.

- Swimming safety: If your dog is a good swimmer, supervise them closely and make sure they don't swim too far out. If they're not a good swimmer, avoid letting them near the water.

- Clean up: Always clean up after your dog and dispose of their waste properly.

Tip: Try using the sticky licky pad with some peanut butter, to distract them while they get used to their environment and for them to be relaxed.

By following these tips, you and your furry friend can enjoy a safe and fun day at the beach.

Can cats get rabies?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that more than 250 cats in the United States are infected with rabies each year.

Rabies is almost 100% fatal, and there is no hope of recovery or long-term management of the disease once a cat has been infected and has started to show symptoms. It’s critical to take the cat to an emergency vet once symptoms appear or if you suspect a rabies infection.

The amount of time between infection and the onset of rabies symptoms is called the incubation period. This ranges from 2-24 weeks, with an average of 4-6 weeks. The length of time depends on how much virus was injected by the bite, how close the bite is to the brain, and whether the cat has been vaccinated.

There is no treatment for rabies in cats, and humane euthanasia is recommended if the disease is strongly suspected. For this reason, it is critical to keep your cat up to date on their rabies vaccine to ensure their health and safety should they become exposed to this disease.

CBD & RABIES

CBD offers myriad benefits for pets, but it’s not a treatment for rabies by any means. Pet owners usually give their dogs CBD to manage the symptoms associated with rabies, such as anxiety, headaches, hyperactivity, etc.

The studies on the pharmacologic effects of CBD on bacteria revealed remarkable antibiotic effects, especially against antibiotic-resistant gram-positive bacteria such as MRSA. It also potentiated the effects of conventional antibiotics.

CBD isn’t an acknowledged treatment for rabies, so you shouldn’t use it instead of the therapy prescribed by your doctor. You can, however, manage behaviors that detract from your ability to keep your dog safe and it might help with the side effects of the vaccine.

CBD & PTSD

We know CBD has been shown to help with anxiety and fear based emotions, as well as negative memories, which may benefit dogs with PTSD. With the proper support and supplements, like calming CBD oil for dogs, we can help our dogs live their best life.

Despite a lack of research in PTSD, and dog PTSD in particular, there has been a significant amount of research in relation to CBD and anxiety that could prove helpful. An article in Neuropharmacology stated, “in addition to modulating basal anxiety states, recent studies suggest an important role for the endocannabinoid (eCB) and glucocorticoid systems in the modulation of emotional states and extinction of aversive memories in animals.” This leads us to believe CBD can aid in the elimination of aversive memories to treat severe anxiety disorders like PTSD.

Do you have a furry friend with PTSD?
Try our tincture or peanut butter. We recommend starting low and slowly increasing the dosage until you find their correct dosage for their anxiety.

If you have any questions, well be happy to help you!

Training a adult dog can be hard sometimes. We're here to help you with some tips!

It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks. In fact, some people find that training adult dogs is easier than training puppies since they can sit still and focus for longer periods of time.

When it comes to unlearning bad habits, never punish your dog for his bad behavior, this may only make things worse. Instead, use plenty of dog training treats and positive reinforcement to redirect his behavior and teach him about the rules and boundaries in your home.

Don’t push your dog past his physical or mental limits. Start with simple commands to build a foundation, and go from there. Before teaching your dog to “stay,” make sure he knows how to “sit.” Before teaching him to “roll over,” he should know how to “lie down.”

Don't forget to relax and have fun!

Adopt a cat, here are great reasons to adopt!

According to Research Gate, owning a cat, or any pet you adopt from a shelter, has been shown to have positive effects on humans’ ability to cope with stress, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Taking a cat home from a shelter can improve your sense of happiness and general well-being.

And like we mentioned before: Adopt, dont buy!

According to the ASPCA, 3.2 million cats can be found in shelters every year and of these, about 860,000 are euthanized annually. Adopting a cat not only helps one of these many animals, looking for a home, but also opens a space for shelters and rescue groups to take in another cat.

According to Clinical & Experimental Allergy, research has found that early exposure to a cat in the home can actually reduce infants’ sensitization to the allergens cats produce3. As a result, kids have a reduced chance of developing allergic diseases.

If you live in a small space, a cat can be an excellent companion because cats don’t require lots of room or daily walks like a dog. Cats are generally low maintenance and if you provide them with toys (like cat trees and window rests for enrichment), they make wonderful roommates.
