$4,600.
That is about the cost for all of our spay/neuters schedule for the month of July. This is ONLY spay/neuter. This does not include their blood tests, vaccines, deworming, flea/tick prevention, food, and other necessary vetting costs and foster supply needs.
If our average spay is $220, and their blood test & vaccines is $80, prevention & deworming for one month $50, and a bag of food $45. This is around $395 if I had to guess. Now if the foster needs a crate to use, we are out of leashes and collars, and any of the other day to days pop up, we are well into the $400’s per dog. Our highest adoption fee is $300. Imagine what it looks like for a medical pup..
This takes that number to about $8,000 if we have no extra vet appointments or needs and if they are only with us for one month. How much will we get from adoptions? $5,500.
I hear all the time “Bri idk how you do it working full time and doing this.” Well, I have to. Because what I will not accept is a dog or cat going without. I will not accept my fosters struggling and not having things they need to be successful. I am not confident enough in my fundraising abilities, my marketing, or just the community to keep us going when everyone is struggling already. The entire country is in crisis. People are struggling to keep their homes, shelters are struggling to keep the lights on, and rescues are struggling to pay their vet bills. I’m so afraid of that coming to us that I have to work and I have to keep pushing forward.
We get push back for our adoption fees sometimes in which case I want to say- kindly touch some grass. Read a book about rescue costs then come back to me lol. We are now running a whole new AC system 24/7- you’d gag at my electric bill. Our well pump is going out.. if I want water for my family and my critters I have to replace that too. I strongly believe that is happening because of how much water we use in any given day. Bathing puppies every single day that p**p in their crates several times a day. Filling kiddie pools to keep them cool and give them some fun- I can keep going. But you get the point.
If you’ve made it this far- I want you to know this isn’t me complaining- I’m so fu***ng grateful I get to do this physically and mentally. I love my life you guys. I wouldn’t change this for the world. But the more help you guys can give me, the more help I can give.
