Thin Line K9s

Thin Line K9's is a nonprofit, based in Gettysburg, PA. Focused on training and advocacy of therapy dogs for first responders.

At the end of 2021, we had the opportunity to add a service dog to our family in order to help mediate specific needs within our family. Unfortunately, purchasing a fully trained service dog was too costly for us to make a reality. After a lot of research and soul searching, we decided to train our service dog ourselves. Our need for a service dog is directly related to being a fire department fam

ily. As we researched the ways a trained service dog could help us, we began to realize how well-trained dogs could help other first responder families cope with the emotional and physical stresses of their job. We decided to simultaneously train our dog as a therapy dog as we trained her to work as our service dog. This decision allows our family the opportunity to give back to our public service family and our community at large. Therapy dogs are specially trained to provide affection, comfort and support to people, often in settings such as hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, libraries, hospices, or disaster areas. Our specific goal is to provide these services to active, retired, career or volunteer public servants such as firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, police officers, ER & ICU nurses, and teachers. We hope to offer this support in firehouses, police stations, hospitals, schools, offices, and even in the homes of people who have dedicated their live to helping our community. Although we have some experience (and have sought the advice and guidance of professional dog trainers, veterinarians, experienced service dog raisers, and others) we recognize that our expertise is not, specifically, in the dog training world. We have already made a number of mistakes, and will continue to make some. However, this journey has already begun to have a huge, positive impact on our lives, and we look forward to sharing this positivity with others! Took another trip to in Hanover today. As always, everyone who worked there was simply awesome and so helpful!
We worked on "place" and feeling calm while riding on things like this lumber cart.

My littlest hooman went to a friend's birthday party at the other night. WOW! It was so loud and busy. I had a really hard time understanding what the hoomans we're doing on those roller skates. They were moving so fast, but not really walking!
Dad kept me calm, though, and I tried hard to keep my mind on my job.
Thanks to the AMAZING people at Magic Elm Skateland! They were awesome and so helpful!

Sometimes, a puppy just needs to be a puppy! TLK9 Tullamore Dew has the zoomies like any other 1 year old pup. Her favorite thing in the world is to RUN and chase her tennis balls. She can (and does) do this for 30 minutes or more before getting tired. Her handler ( Rich Dooley ) has to use a launcher so he doesn't throw out his shoulder!

In the very unlikely event that I can't become a service dog, I still hope to have an important job. I'm trying to get used to the noises and smells of firehouses so I can be a station dog. Dad would bring me to visit on duty firefighters, EMTs, and police officers. Apparently, talking to the same dog (like me!) is really helpful for them to deal with the realities of their important job!

My hoomans went to a Christmas Festival in downtown Gettysburg today. There were so many smells from the food trucks and so many other dogs trying to play with me!
I kept calm, though, and paid attention to my job! The nice people at even gave me a pup-cup of roast beef when dad got dinner!

TLK9 Tullamore Dew hasn't been feeling her best lately. The decision was made that she would not be having puppies, and she has needed time to recover from surgery.
Luckily, her littlest handler has been taking Great care of her as she recovers!

TLK9 Tullamore Dew took a quick trip to Jersey Mike's Subs in Gettysburg, PA today. The staff were amazing, and so very professional! They even made a special "pup cup" for Tully to eat after she got off duty.

TLK9 Tullamore Dew met with a new groomer a couple of weeks ago. She is not too happy with the results! At least she's a bit cooler for the end of summer!

TLK9 Tullamore Dew recently moved on to restaurant training. She's now learning to ignore the hussle and bussle (not to mention smells!) of a restaurant. Tonight, she went to Tommy's Pizza & Half Pint Creamery (she crashed a daddy and daughter date night!)

Thank you to both Tommy's & Half Pint! Both establishment's employees were outstanding, polite, and kind! They seemed to know the appropriate ways to interact (or more importantly not interact!) with Tully while maintaining complete professionalism. PLUS the pizza and ice cream were AMAZING!

We're not the first to train dogs for therapy service with first responders. K9's For Warriors has a great program in the south. Someday (soon) we'd like to accomplish here in PA & MD what they have in FL!

The daily grind of simple obedience training and socializing. We spent some time yesterday practicing "tuck" in the busy aisles of Walmart.
Tuck is a command for TLK9 Tullamore Dew to lay down at the side of the aisle or against the wall, and to stay until released with, "Let's go!"
This is how Tully stays out of the way of other customers while her handler is shopping.
As always, thanks to the amazing staff at The Gettysburg Walmart for their professionalism, friendliness, and help!
