This 100%. This is why it is so important to take what you and your dog have learned and continue to implement these things when they go home. If you do not, dogs WILL revert back to their previous behaviors.

Owners and trainers both need to better understand this dynamic.

Without clarity on this, owners develop unrealistic expectations, and trainers take on unhealthy responsibility.

Dogs only change when their environment changes—and only when it changes longterm.

Good trainers coach their clients on how to best change the environment their dogs live in by changing how their clients interact with their dogs daily, moment to moment.

Thus the only way you “fix” dogs is by “fixing” their owners through competent coaching and education. Any other expectation or promise is a guaranteed trip to disappointment-land, for both parties.

🐾🐶Socialization in puppies is arguably one of the most important aspects of a dog's life and is often something that either gets forgotten about or misunderstood. Here are our do's and don'ts to help you start off on the right foot with your puppy!

✅DO'S:

1. Keep things light and fun. Make everything a positive experience.

At this age…… it’s not that serious! You have plenty of time to show off their fancy obedience later. Don’t suck the confidence out of them before they’re given the chance to have it!

2. Take them to different environments: fields, gravel, concrete, ponds etc.

The more places and positive experiences your puppy has, the more confident they will be. A confident puppy is a stable puppy! Reactivity often stems from insecurity.

3. Teach them to prioritize their relationship with you over their environment.

Once your puppy learns just how cool you are and how much cooler you are than anything else, their trust in you will shine through and obedience will be easier to maintain even in highly distractive environments when they’re older.

4. Teach them to tolerate being handled for nail trims, ear cleanings, teeth exams, vaccines, etc.

Going to the vet is going to be a huge part of your puppy’s life along with grooming, boarding, and even professional training. You never know what life is going to throw at your dog, so teaching them to be comfortable with baths, regular nail trims and ear cleanings, dental exams, blood draws, and vaccines are essential for a confident puppy.

❌DON'TS:

1. Take your puppy to the dog park.

Dog parks are filled with a lot of unknowns. Are the other dogs aggressive? Are they going to attack my puppy? Do they have up-to-date vaccines? We don’t want to chance it and find out!

2. Let your puppy interact with other dogs who don’t interact appropriately.

All it takes is one bad interaction with an aggressive or overbearing dog to set your dog back for a long time! Be sure you’re setting your puppy up for success with safe interactions with other dogs!

3. Expect perfect obedience from your puppy right away.

Let’s get your puppy feeling confident in different environments first! The obedience will fall into place after!

4. Let them interact with every person they encounter.

Allowing your puppy to greet every person around can create the expectation that they need to say “Hi” to everyone all the time (even when it’s not appropriate). Teaching them to prioritize YOUR relationship with them over other people will set you up for success in the future.

If you cannot hold your hand on the concrete for more than 2 seconds at a time, then it is too hot for your pet! Choose to walk early in the morning or late at night. If you have to walk during the day, try to stay on the grass.
