Please help her find her home

On Sunday, August 18 Chandler Police responded to a call involving a stray dog running in and out of traffic near Ray and Arizona Roads. Officers brought the dog to where she stayed with our staff for two nights. Timid and shy at first, she quickly turned into a sweet 'lovebug'. MCACC picked the dog up this morning. As no microchip was found, she will be on 'stray wait' until Aug. 23. Hello Hu***ng: When your dog jumps on visitors, instruct, “Sit”. When your dog barks excessively, instruct, “Shush”. When your dog uses your living room for agility, instruct, “Settle”, or “Find your Chewtoy, Go to your Bed, and Settle”. And when your dog humps another dog, (to avoid upsetting and annoying the dog’s owner) instruct, “Off”. It’s really that simple, that is, if you have taught your dog the meaning of your instructions (via lure-reward training) and then proofed reliability for all scenarios with just a couple of very easy yet incredibly effective exercises, and then tested Response Reliability — an index of your dog’s comprehension and motivation to respond. Applying practical Science-Based Training. (Not the Century-old learning THEORY!)

On , we’re sharing a few important reminders on the importance of microchips - such as:

➡ 1 in 3 family pets will get lost
➡ Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners and microchipped cats are more than 20 times as likely to be returned to their owners

And remember - while microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen…a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate.

The first signs of the Fight response is when your dog barks, growls, and lunges. It does not have to be actual fighting, but includes any active response intended to move another dog or person away.

The first sign the mouth will often do is to tightly close and the corners of the mouth extend backwards.

The agonistic pucker where the skin above the nose wrinkles and the teeth become visible can be accompanied by a growl or can occur alone and be completely silent. This is a strong warning to whatever is approaching whether that be another dog or a human. You would usually see other body signals as well such as a forward position, hard stare, rigid stance and stiff and upright tail.

Many guardians may be tempted to admonish the growl, but this will often stop the dog doing this warning, so they will miss out this step completely and potentially go straight to biting. If you are struggling with a reactive or sensitive dog then you need urgent help.

Use Little Bites.

When you use food in training, the act of giving a piece of food is more important than the size of the piece of food you give. You'll get much more bang for your buck if you split a single piece of food into several pieces, to use for several rewards.

TROUBLESHOOTING

My dog doesn't like food/kibble
You can train your dog to value food more using Classical Conditioning:
Simply give your dog a piece of their regular kibble just before you let your dog do any of their favorite activities. For example, give your dog a piece of kibble before you pet them, before you let them get on the couch or go into the backyard, before you play tug or fetch or chase, and before you go for a walk. When you take them for a walk, stop every couple of minutes, then give them a piece of kibble before you resume the walk. Your dog will start to associate the kibble with all of these fun activities, and as a result, they'll like kibble much more than before.
