Desert Veterinary Medical Specialists

Desert Veterinary Medical Specialists We Love Caring for Our Patients and Their Families We believe there is a reason it’s called ‘Specialty’ Medicine. At DVMS, every patient is special.

Yes, we’re board-certified specialists, but it is the very special families and pets we have the privilege of caring for that make our profession so fulfilling. And it takes a very special primary care veterinarian to spearhead the collaborative effort that, together, we can provide. We receive referrals from veterinarians all across Arizona and the southwest and appreciate being called upon to pr

ovide specialized care. And every patient’s family deserves the time, compassion, and information they need to make decisions that are right for their pet. Please know that our goal is to assist you, in any way we can. We are glad you chose Desert Veterinary Medical Specialists.

MooMoo's Moo-ving Recovery Story! 🐄💪

Guess who came to visit us today?
Our senior CVT's little one had a special request that mom bring her beloved stuffed cow, MooMoo into work with her to repair her eye.

MooMoo had a little accident and needed some expert care to fix her eye. Our amazing team jumped into action, and with some delicate "surgery," MooMoo is now back in tip-top shape! Here are some snapshots from MooMoo's procedure and her happy recovery in her owner's loving arms. 🥰

MooMoo is feeling much better, all thanks to the love and care she received. We're so glad we could help bring a smile to her owner's face!

Jade had quite a day! Despite stressful circumstances, she was such a joy to have at the hospital. A CT scan was performed due to concerns of coughing and a mediastinal mass. The scan yields fantastic news, with no mediastinal mass detected. Hopefully, this will bring some relief to Jade's owners. Ongoing monitoring for her other concerns and the persistent cough is important and she will continue to follow-up as needed.

This picture of her being wheeled out in a cart to her owners’ vehicle is heartwarming to see, highlighting the care and consideration given to her, especially given the challenge of slippery floors and her post-anesthesia grogginess. Wishing Jade a smooth recovery and many more happy moments with her family!

Chowder is a sweet 5-year-old English Bulldog that has tons of love to give, even at the doctor’s office. He came to see our internal medicine team after visiting the emergency room because he had trouble breathing and was coughing. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and one of our amazing internists, Dr. Jacobs, knew just what to do to help him heal. He just recently came to see us again for a recheck appointment and we are so happy to report that Chowder’s pneumonia has resolved, and he is feeling much better! Chowder has a few other medical issues that we will continue to manage to keep him feeling like his best self and able to keep spreading joy to everyone he meets.

Here is the best selfie of doctor and patient to help brighten your day! Please meet "Henry", a Chinese Crested that presented to Dr. Church for a follow-up exam. He was diagnosed with Moderate Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease (Stage B2), Valley Fever (pleural effusion), Mild Pulmonary Hypertension. Henry will continue to follow-up with Dr. Church for monitoring of his diseases and I am sure for future selfies with his favorite Cardiologist.

*Respiratory Disease in Dogs Sweeping Across the US*
A recent outbreak of respiratory disease in dogs is being reported across the US and we know you are likely concerned about your pet. The cause is still being investigated. The disease can cause coughing ranging from mild to severe and is not responsive to antibiotics, it can last up to 8 weeks in some cases. While uncommon, severe pneumonia requiring hospitalization and more aggressive treatment with antibiotics has been needed in some cases. Because the cause has not yet been determined, no specific tests or treatments have been developed. Investigations are underway and updates will be given as they become available. At the moment, the only general precautions to take are keeping a safe distance from other dogs and not letting your pet share water bowls or food with other dogs, especially if they are showing any respiratory signs. If you have any questions about the health or risks for your pet, do not hesitate to contact us or your local veterinarian for more information. For more information, you can also look at:

We regret to inform you that Royal Canin has decided to discontinue their venison line of selected protein diets. There is a limited amount still available. If your pet is eating this diet, please let us know if you would like us to try and order what we can. If you have any queries regarding this matter, please contact Royal Canin. If you need recommendations on an alternative diet, please contact us or your primary veterinarian. It is important to note that this is a prescription diet, and we can only prescribe or recommend diets if you have had a consultation with our doctor within the past year.

Say hello to this goofball "Sullivan". He belongs to one of our technicians and comes to see us when his tummy troubles start to flare. He is the sweetest boy and a joy to have at the clinic. As you can tell by this photo he has a silly side to him, and is always around for a good laugh as long as there are belly rubs involved as well. We love that you are apart of our family!

Meet Milton pictured with his Technician Alexis aka "Georgia". He has been seeing Dr. Riensche since 2020 for Chronic cough, Valley Fever and an elevated ALT. His last follow-up with lab work shows that he is doing well and won't need to see us for another 6 months. Milton is a very enjoyable patient for his visits, and we are glad to see he is doing well.
