A chilly day for a Sheepdog trial!

And like that a week has gone by in a flash and the 2024 USBCHA National Sheepdog Finals has come to a close congratulations to all the winners! We want to give a huge shout out to Shona O Kane and Jori along with their Horses Fancy, Jones, and Dunny and Dogs Oz, Preacher and Lassie for all of their help and hard work this week as our set out team. Thank you as well to all of the volunteers that came up and filled in when Kelsy and I needed an extra hand in the pens. We couldn't have done it with out all of you, you were all an absolute joy to work with!

We also want to thank Rebecca Gibson, Dee Bailes, and Nicole Bozich for putting this huge event together. Everything was phenomenal, and we appreciate all the hard work yall did to put this together for our sheep dog community

When we said "Quiet and Kind" we meant it! When we take on the task of being the pen crew for your Trials we understand that not only is it expected for the flow of the trial to be maintained and orderly, but also that the sheep used for the trial are well cared for and respected. We want our clients and their stock to feel comfortable with us and strive to maintain minimally advertise practices when working with animals

It's been a muddy mucky last couple of days here at the USBCHA National Finals, but these guys have been such lovely sheep to work with we haven't had a single issue besides some in general sheep naughtiness 😂 The handling system that we've have been using has been great as well easy to use and allows for you to move around in the system quickly and plenty of access points to pull sheep out if needed.

Not to mention our beautiful view of the trial field

I was about to cook dinner when I saw the dogs staring at something in the backyard like it was the latest doggy soap opera. Luckily, River Alfriker is a snake whisperer and saved this copperhead's skin, allowing it to slither away and enjoy more cicada buffets.

Maple knew that inventory management was no joke, so she put on her best game face and got down to business over the weekend. She was ready to take on the world, one perfectly organized hay flake at a time.

We've been putting our pen skills to the test all summer long! Finally got some snazzy t-shirts to show off our skills and let everyone know we're open for business. Who knew being the pen crew would be so fun? Fen the German Shepherd sure did!

The past few weeks have been torturous at my job. My days have been running 12+ hours with everything that needs doing including my 9-5.

But every evening despite the heat and humidity I look forward to this. To being out in my pasture with my flock tending. I on one side and my partner on the other with the dogs watching the sun set and listening to all the bird songs.

Looking out with my shepherd crook in hand feels like I've been doing it for so many lives, it creates so much peace.

Sure my back hurts, my head is pounding and I'm probably not drinking enough water but this moment here is what I think about every day.

The wind blowing softly by me, the smell of sweet gum trees.
And the readiness to chase away sheep and goats that are getting a little to close to leaving their pasture with my crook in hand.

Always ready and always watching.

Our fences may be down but our flock still needs to forage especially with all the over growth in our still forming pasture.

So the past few days we've gone out and manned the fence lines ourselves until we can get physical fence up for them.

We've been having a terrible time keeping our electric fences working so of course today when I got home from work a group of ducks had made their way to the neighbors house. Thankfully they are easy to herd back home with just my shepherd crook, and Bacardi as an honorary herding cat.

A hot humid evening with some pretty nice pictures of a couple of our cats, Chase Birds, Kovu, Dog and Nokia. In addition some photos of our Sidhes, Cú and Ban with our sheep who are currently grazing the backyard down while we troubleshoot our fence box.

We left our cat Tavern open so the cats could continue to use it, it's shaded, shelter from rain and has a dog house in it as well. Apparently Helium and Mellow realized they could fit too.
