Modern rewards based methods trainer PSA:
~If your trainer tells you that your dog is not allowed to sniff on walks, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer tells you that your dog is not allowed to potty on walks, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer tells you that you need to be alpha or dominant over your dog, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer teaches you to punish your dog if they don't do what you have asked, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer tells you that you need to be "in charge" of your dog, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer tells you that you need a prong collar or a choke chain to walk your dog or train your dog, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer tells you that tossing a rolled up and taped towel at your dog when they are doing something you don't like, is an appropriate way to address that behavior, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer tells you that shaking a can full of coins at your dog is an effective way to deter behaviors you don't like, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer tells you that shaking your finger in your dog's face and loudly shouting no at your dog is a way to help your dog make better choices, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer suggests that you need an expensive electronic collar with a remote button that they are calling a stim or an e-collar instead of what it actually is, a shock collar, in order to train your dog effectively, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer suggest poking your dog with your finger and hissing at him or her is an effective way to modify their behavior, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer suggests leash correcting your dog in order to help make them make better choices on walks, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer suggest that your dog does not need rewarded for making good choices, get a new trainer.
~If your trainer makes any suggestions at all that make you feel like your dog is uncomfortable, scared, stressed, or concerned in any way, throw that trainer out of your house and be your dog's voice and get a new trainer.
The real message here is that your dog depends on you to keep him or her safe. You do not have to tolerate people using outdated methods and calling it training. Some day this industry will have regulation to keep you and your dog safer. Until then, your dog depends on you and your choices. Choose your trainer wisely. And choose kindness. ❤
