BARN NEWS .... As you know, we are pursuing our new Rescue Barn project. You have to start somewhere, so a big oak tree that was standing in the footprint of the barn had to go in order to be able to make space for the barn site. Seemed like a good idea to fell the tree first and then build the barn, instead of the other way around ...duh? It will also be lots of firewood come winter ... the folks around here think that the first day of summer is the time to start planning for winter! Ouch!

I SEE THE STARS, I HEAR THE ROLLING THUNDER, THY POWER THOUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE DISPLAYED .... We watched the storm come in and a beautiful rainbow appeared on the left side of this short video with the lightening and fury of the storm behind it .. my God how great Thou art!
AWWW! Sometimes when Ms. Ann and Jeri Allison: Animal and Pet Portraits are moving horses from one pasture to another, the dogs are not an asset! Left to right, Amos, Angus and Codi ... they lobbied longer than this video is, but it didn't change the result ... pups had to stay home for this one ...
RIDING INTO FALL ... After all the barn chores were done, Ms. Ann (on Dunny) and Jeri Allison: Animal and Pet Portraits (on Domino) took a nice long, late Summer trail ride yesterday and got back just before the rain came!
YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE IN THERE! We haven't posted in a while because we've been busy giving swimming lessons to the horses! Anyone who lives around here knows that I'm serious! But there is levity, often supplied by Doc and friends... Watch and listen to the video ...
OREO! Oreo was surrendered to Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary the first week of May. Suffering from acute laminitis, the sweet 8 year old Black and White pony mare's hooves were badly deformed and painful.
We had our expert farrier , Bryan Crouse, at the farm ready for Oreo's arrival. Bryan quickly evaluated the little pony's situation and began the work of nipping and trimming her twisted hooves. Oreo's toes and heels were carefully balanced which is critical to her recovery. She will now be trimmed every 3-4 weeks until her hoof growth is normal again.
After recovery, little Oreo, who is sweet, affectionate and good with children will be available for adoption.
The videos below show Oreo's arrival and Bryan's work in ️relieving her pain and beginning to put her feet back in the proper position. ❤️
WORMS? Every 8 weeks the horses get wormed, by administering a paste of Ivermectin or Strongid with a plastic tube that is dosed for each particular horse, based on their weight. The tube goes into the back of the horse's mouth and the paste is "squirted" out.
Today Ms. Ann had some very helpful volunteers come to assist in the process, Zoe Cremeens (High Country Farm Sitting Services) and Jeri Allison (Jeri Allison: Animal and Pet Portraits). Below is a short video of Zoe with Bo who had just been given his dose. As you can hear from Ms. Ann's narration, they did 10 out of 19 horses, which is a full days work, with another full day to come!
BIG JOE ...This new addition to the herd is Big Joe a 24 YO Tennessee Walker. Miss Ann estimates that he is about 250 lbs under weight. He was an owner surrender. If anyone wonders what we do here at SSFS, this is it. We've had much worse cases of malnutrition, but he would not have survived the winter in this condition. Joe was pastured with another horse who was fine, but at Joe's age and without having his teeth floated, he was dropping body mass quickly because he couldn't chew the grass around him and thus he couldn't get nutrition from the forage. He will now get 4-5 small meals of grain a day along with shredded beet pulp to replace the hay that he can't chew. May God lay His hands on this sweet horse and help SSFS to help him thrive again.
Big Joe needs your prayers and if you can help support his new nutrition routine, use the donate button on this page to make a one time gift or an ongoing gift for Big Joe.

BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT! Southern Sun horses were back in the spotlight during the filming of a western movie, written and directed by @Clint Johnson, one of our wonderful volunteers. It was filmed at Saloon Studios Live just outside of West Jefferson, NC where, today, they are having Frontier Day...a fun event for all! Come on out and enjoy the fun ... cowboys, gunfights, robberies, western wear and a whole lot more!
SPRING ENOUGH! Zoe Cremeens is a long time friend and volunteer at the Sanctuary and owner-operator at High Country Farm Sitting Services. Zoe has taken a special liking to Belle and visits as often as she can, even in winter to groom her and socialize her. But today was "Spring" enough that a quick ride was in order! Off they went and here's a short video as they return. Riders up ...it's Spring enough!

BIG DOC - Nimble Feet
BIG DOC - On a nice summer day, there's nothing like a Dogwood tree to scratch your back ... or maybe he's trying to learn the two-step, we're not sure, but either way he's got some pretty nimble feet!
