OLD MAN WINTER has arrived! We had several inches of snow yesterday and an actual temperature of 15 degrees! The horses are all blanketed, they all have shelter to go in to and we finished the evening putting out round hay bales to keep their internal Bunsen burners burning! Sounded like a Hot Buttered Rum evening and so it was!

SANTA CAME EARLY this year ... the William Pope Foundation just contributed $20,000 to Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary! They contacted us and said they had additional funds to allocate this year and one of their Board members is a major horse lover living in Ocala, Florida. She suggested that they look for a way to help in the disaster recovery efforts in Western North Carolina and they found us! The John William Pope Foundation "makes grants to improve the well-being of North Carolinians by advancing the ideas of limited government, individual freedom, personal responsibility, and strong communities. The Foundation approaches this meaningful work in two ways: through grants that have lasting implications for a free and prosperous society and grants that meet immediate societal needs." This grant will certainly help accomplish the Foundation's goals.

Meet Chief! 🐴 Chief was Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary’s first rescue. After a tragic accident, no one claimed the injured gelding, and his road to recovery was a tough one. Abused and traumatized, Chief’s training was a challenge—two trainers gave up, and three people were injured. But Ann never quit on him. Years later, their bond is unbreakable. 💪

STILL AN URGENT NEED! 🐴
Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary is in dire need of a horse trailer. Our only trailer is 33 years old and was damaged in the storm. It is still driveable, but we are being asked to relocate "refugee" horses and could really use a 3-4 horse trailer, bumper pull or Goose-neck. If our current trailer breaks down during a transport, it will just make the problem worse. If someone can donate a better one to the cause it would be greatly appreciated. We can come and get it. We are a 501(c)(3) horse rescue, so the donation would be tax deductible.

This is Ashe County, where we live and the horse rescue, Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary is situated. Our barns and stalls were flooded. But at 3500' elevation we lost trees and fences. We managed to keep 39 animals fed, watered and sheltered without power or running water
We were blessed to have so many people helping.

Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary is located at 3500 feet and adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The mission of Southern Sun Horse Rescue is to provide a safe, secure place for abandoned, abused, neglected or unwanted equines. This mission includes providing feed, shelter, veterinary and farrier care as well as socializing. Some horses are adopted into loving forever homes. Some will have useful lives here such as trail horses. Some will live out their lives on the farm. Southern Sun is known to take those animals “least likely to find a home anywhere else. TRADITION LIVES! Each Summer we take a trail ride about a mile and half from Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary, Inc.to the Park Vista Motor Lodge & Diner and have lunch. The restaurant was closed for a while, but is now re-opened under new management and it is terrific! We put up a "hitching post" in the trees and it has stayed up for many years and "hosted" many horses. I'll post a pic of the riders at the hitching post in a few. BARN NEWS .... As you know, we are pursuing our new Rescue Barn project. You have to start somewhere, so a big oak tree that was standing in the footprint of the barn had to go in order to be able to make space for the barn site. Seemed like a good idea to fell the tree first and then build the barn, instead of the other way around ...duh? It will also be lots of firewood come winter ... the folks around here think that the first day of summer is the time to start planning for winter! Ouch! https://gofund.me/7f4a4b0a

I SEE THE STARS, I HEAR THE ROLLING THUNDER, THY POWER THOUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE DISPLAYED .... We watched the storm come in and a beautiful rainbow appeared on the left side of this short video with the lightening and fury of the storm behind it .. my God how great Thou art!
