Big old boar Tacoma Lonestar and Gatsby got Friday night. Been after him since last summer. He ran for 2 hours, took them thru a group of hogs (which has worked in his favor in the past) but not this time. Proud of the dog work that went into this wise old veteran boar. He weighed in at 347.4

This litter is almost a year old and they are all making hands. Natural hunt, brain and built for speed and emdurance. Real pleased with how they are turning out. Cant wait to see what their doing at 2.

Day after day I see posts of people looking for "hog dogs". Whether it be a catch dog, bay dog, started dog or finished dog. They are never ending. One commanality I see is the price in which people want to pay for said dog. Hog doggers as a whole are the cheapest folks in the dog world. I constantly see guys wanting a started dog for 2-300 bucks.
Now let's do a little math. If you feed a dog a middle of the road dog feed at 30 bucks a bag, 1 bag a month for 1 year which is an average starting age that is $360 bucks add in deworming for easy math let's call it 400 bucks a year to raise a dog.
The average hog dogger wants to purchase a dog that someone has put time into to haul to the woods and hunt for half that cost. They do not value the work another person has put into a dog. Starting young dogs is not for the faint of heart. Its a roller coaster of good hunts and nad days..one step forward twp steps back. The average hog dogger will also spend the money to buy 3-5 culls at that low cost, only still be left without what they were attempting to purchase. Theybwill complain how they were sold a cull, but they never did their homework to start with. Those same guys will say that 600 is too much for a dog out of proven stock that you can go to the woods and hunt behind the parents of.
Now I know everyone and their brother has a story of how their best dog was free yadda yadda. I have had amazing dogs that were gifted to me. I am not saying there are not good free dogs out there. What I am saying is if you want a quality dog off quality stock be willing to pay for it. Be willing to take the time to go hunt behind the persons dogs you want to purchase from. Do your homework. Don't insult a person by saying their hard work and time doesn't fit your budget.
Also a real dogman does not sell out every October and repurchase dogs every February. Folks that do that care only about killing hogs not about the dog work that goes into catching hogs. Bear dogs, c**n dogs, deer dogs all typically have a price tag that reflects the time, effort and care the person that raised and trained the dog has put into the animal.

Pups doing the dang thing. Tovi the dark red and brindles first time to the woods first time to see a hog. She made it to a bay then rolled out on another got her on 3 for the day. My garmin died and I had to put her on a leash cause she wanted to keep hunting
