Ｈａｕｌｉｎｇ Ｃｏｌｔｓ

While riding a c**t in public for the first time definitely isn’t the most glamorous job, it is a necessary one. We haul our c**ts as much as possible once they are broke to show them the city lights. If they are already used to the sights of rodeos (clown acts, bouncy houses and all), they have one less distraction when it’s time to enter. Any minor step to keep a horse’s confidence is a major step in our program.

Cude Quarter Horses is known for producing horses that can do it all. Our rope horses are competitive in the barrel racing pen, and our barrel horses have experience working cattle. While our training methods are a factor, we have spent almost 50 years selectively breeding for versatility. It takes a balance of speed and cow to have a horse that can do it all, and our horses’ papers reflect this belief.

Giving our c**ts time to grow and mature contributes to fewer injuries and a longer career. These young geldings have spent the summer growing, and we are anxiously waiting for cooler temperatures to continue their training!

It is our goal as trainers to make consistent horses, so all we have to worry about in the arena is our own performance. By using the roping sled, we can take out the variability of live cattle when teaching a horse to track up to an object. This builds the confidence and consistency it takes to be a stellar rope horse.

By the way, this is Valentino’s first day working with the sled👀

Our decision to invest in a red light laser device has proven to be a valuable asset for our equine health and wellness program. Its ability to speed up recovery time for ligament strains and joint soreness has made it an integral part of our treatment plan. We have also seen positive results when using the laser on ourselves, further emphasizing its benefits. As our animals' and our own health and performance are closely intertwined, we rely on technologies like red light laser therapy to achieve optimal functioning.

Naming our horses after a family favorite movie, Top Gun, was a creative idea that sparked a tradition. Each year, we continue to choose themes that help us not only come up with names, but also track the horse's age without needing to refer to papers. Our themes from the past six years include:

2019 - Hot Sauces 🌶️
2020 - Country Music Artists 🎶
2021 - Lion King 🦁
2022 - Luxury Brands 🛍️
2023 - Luxury Cars 🏎️

SS Sooner Cash (aka Sonny) still looks good 15 years later! The first picture is him as a six year old, and the second is him at 21. He is enjoying retirement from the roping pen while still getting to breed a few mares every year!

We have built an impressive broodmare herd over the years, with a mix of purchased and home-bred mares. Our breeding program yields an average of 10 c**ts per year the last three years, with diverse bloodlines that include Stoli, Boon San, Corona Cartel, and Flaming Fire Water. We eagerly anticipate the arrival of each foal crop, and the 2025 crop is expected to be outstanding.

“Why the 34?”

The 34 brand symbolizes a generational legacy beyond just our horses. The number 34 belonged to Bobby Cude when he played high school football. The brand was established in the 90s with Easy Eighty’s foals. Still being used generations later, the 34 brand is a stamp of pride and tradition in the legacy of our program.

The Wild Horse Prairie Days Double Mugging was one for the books! Brand Cude on Eightys Grandson (aka Tigger) won the first round with the fastest time of the day. Ryder Cude on Scotty Sooner (aka Scotty) won the second round and the average! This roping had a Pendleton start, which was a true test of the ultimate all-around horse!

!!Stallion Spotlight!!

Easy Eighty (aka Eighty) was purchased off the track and turned into an all-around horse. He was Brand’s go-to horse in the 80s and 90s, while he also produced roping and timed event offspring. He is the sire of Eightys Sport (aka Sweetness - 2010 2011 and 2012 AQHA-PRCA tie down horse of the year) along with many other horses that left their mark in our program. We are still breeding mares that have him in their pedigree to this day.

!!Stallion Spotlight!!

Flaming Nick Bar (aka Bud) was born on our place when we were boarding a mare for a family friend! His oldest foal crop is 6, and they are showing promise in the barrel pen while still riding around like good cow horses. Bud has been a good addition of speed crossed on mares out of SS Sooner Cash (aka Sonny).

"SS Sooner Cash" (aka Sonny) has been a part of our program for 20 years as a stallion and an all-around horse. He has competed in calf roping, breakaway, double mugging, heeling, goat tying, barrels, and poles! We have focused on crossing him on running bred mares to create all-around offspring. His c**ts have been used in every discipline, and he puts a great mind on them.
