The hunter was able to get a short video of the shot. At first the glow of the lumenok looks like it was way forward, maybe even neck. He couldnt find blood or the bolt. So he backed out and called me. It was 6hrs after the shot when we arrived. We were able to freeze the video and seen the hit. It looked high above shoulder but below the spine. The wind was strong and swirling, Rip took me right to a fence and wanted to barrel thru it, I had to get him under and me over. Then right to another fence. I stopped him there and really looked for blood to confirm the deer crossed the fence. I couldnt find anything and called him off (big mistake on my part). Started him again at hit site. Still no sign of bolt or blood. Wind really swirling, Rip took a big loop into the beans and got down wind and headed back to the fence. This time I took him a ways down to an easier crossing(which was upwind from where we originally crossed. So he did a big loop and we ended up back at that second fence where he tried to cross the first time!!! lol got downwind and 60yds later to the deer which had gome 250yds from where he was hit. The bolt was buried in him with no exit wound. The only blood was where he laid, I back tracked and really looked to confirm. Always trust the dog, what would of been a 5 minute track took an hour. Congrats John on your buck! Happy Hunter!

After a long week of non lethal tracks, finally a clean quick 156yd recovery! Congrats Tylor on your first buck! He felt he had a good shot but snuck out and his Uncle told us to come in on a clean track! Thanks for letting Rip come recover him!

Well are last 2 tracks have been tough with no recovery. 1st was 4hr old track what was thought to be a little high but bolt penetrating into opposite shoulder stuck in the deer. When we got to the hit site it didn't take long to find the bolt that was actually a pass thru. The bolt had little blood mainly covered in fat. After analyzing what I believed to be a high entrance and exit they had previously tracked the deer for a couple hundred yards and believed to jump him. We preceeded to track and I noticed the blood was only on exit side and resemble and muscle hit. Rip followed the track to the bed and took me for about another 300yds and totally lost interest. We are still learning from each other but I felt confident the deer was alive from the bolt and blood and trusted rips reaction but we did a few more starts and a down wind thru bedding just to be safe. Hopefully the hunter can confirm later this season that he's alive. 2 the hunter knew he hit him back just infront of the hind quarter and a little high bury into opposite hip watching the deer cover a couple hundred yards with arrow still in him. He waited several hours then checked where he entered the thicket and only found 40yds or so of blood and backed out. By the time we made it out it was 22hr old track Rip was on the track from hit site and quickly covered the 200yds to thicket thru the thicket and out to a pasture he had some trouble and did a couple circles back thru the thicket until he locked back on and took us across the road where we confirmed blood on the track into cattails and more thicket about another 300yds to where we jumped the buck and needless to say I got a lesson quick! Rip dragged me thru the thicket leaving me cut up to say the least and I lost control of his lead. 20 min later I caught up to him at a river and we crossed it to a road which was a mile from the jump site and called Rip off. Never found the arrow or anymore blood after the jump site.

Congrats to Jason on his buck! He shot the buck last night at around 6pm and new it wasn't a good hit quartering to him. They waited an hour and decided to track and had some blood but never recovered the arrow and went about 150 yds. I got the call about 10pm and we decided to wait til morning. Little over 14hr old track Rip did a few circles thru where they tracked we got past to where it was just the deer and another 737yds we recovered him thru the cattails and in the muck along a pond! The hit ended up being about 6 in back from the shoulder with the arrow just penetrating between the legs just under the butt. Mainly all guts.

Congratulations Kevin on your first deer harvest! Liver hit quartering into guts with no exit wound made for no blood trail with drops few and very far inbetween. After the shot Kevin waited 40 min in his stand got down couldnt find his bolt and only hair and few drops of blood at the hit site. He pulled out and our mutual friend called us. We decided to give it a few hours and went in. The deer covered 307 yds Rip did a great job!

Got this from Dean Muckdog's Deer Recovery & Training Kennel LLC Rip is a young Alpine Dachsbracke. He has a fantastic nose but also an intense prey drive to hunt other game. This is not uncommon for young dogs and from talking with other Dachsbracke owners this is very typical of this breed. We want to be able to recognize by his behavior that he’s on off game and be able to redirect him which he does a nice job of and it helps that he’s super easy to read when he does so. Our ultimate goal is for him to ignore off game altogether or go back to work on his own after off game catches his attention. This track is a great example of him self correcting which is exactly what we are after!
