Make sure you have a current coggins. When hauling have your paperwork in order and with you. Generally you have not had to have a current coggins for in state equine at Nebraska events; but check with the events you are attending in the state as we're sure you will be required to have current coggins at all events in the State of Nebraska even if you are a state resident. Plan ahead, don't wait for the last minute and expect to get coggins when you need them.

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture announced Thursday it has confirmed the first case of an incurable equine virus found in the state in over a decade.

The Health Requirements for the 2024 Nebraska State Fair are posted on our website, https://www.statefair.org/ag-competitions/livestock-exhibitors/. One major change for 2024 is we will NOT be requiring Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) for in-state animals. Animals originating out-of-state will still require one. Veterinary inspections upon arrival will continue for all animals. Please keep in mind this can be adjusted in the case of a disease outbreak or at the recommendation of the Nebraska State Veterinarian.

And we have an excellent person doing our dentals. Watch our post for when we have dental days.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. While horses don’t exactly qualify as pets, this is still a good opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of having a veterinarian check your horse’s teeth at least once a year.

Following is some important food for thought (pun intended) courtesy of AAEP member Dr. Christine Staten:

“Did you know that horses don’t really need their incisors to eat? Yep, even pasture. But if their incisors are a mess, it affects their ability to appropriately grind their food with their molars and pre-molars.

Dental work in horses is not just about floating teeth to get off points. It’s about balancing the mouth so that they can get the most nutrition out of their food without pain.

Shearing hay in the mouth is necessary to get the nutrition out. The guy in the picture was skinny because he could not move his jaw laterally enough to shear his food, but his health and body condition score improved significantly once the incisors were balanced.”

When was the last time you had your horse’s teeth checked?

We are an ag State why do we want to tax Veterinary Services. All the Governor wants to do is lower property taxes to do this they have to generate the revenue from another place so they will tax other items. All they are doing is robbing peter to pay paul. Reduce spending is how to lower taxes.

ACTION ALERT - Veterinary Sales Tax Exemption

On Thursday, February 1st, the Revenue Committee will hold a hearing on LB 1311. All members are encouraged to take action to oppose LB 1311 - a bill that would impose a sales tax on veterinary services.

What can you do?

1) Email each of the senators who serve on the Revenue Committee and voice your opposition to the bill - you may email to all senators at once or each individually.

2) Post online comments in opposition to the bill on the Legislature’s webpage – click on the link below and then click “Submit Comments Online for 1311”. This step will ensure that at the hearing on Thursday, when Senators consider the testimony in favor and in opposition to the bill – they will hear from the Chairwoman of the Committee: “We received ____ Letters in opposition to the bill.”

Both steps should take a combined five minutes and will be crucial for the care of animals in our state.

Join us on Thursday for the NVMA Legislative Action Day. Two bills of interest will be heard on Thursday - LB 1311 (sales tax on veterinary services) and LB 892 (controlled substances to include xylazine)
