🌾🐾Roscoe's Relief: A Foxtail Tale!🐾🌾

Today, we had the pleasure of helping Roscoe, a sweet little dog who had been dealing with a mystery discomfort for a few weeks. After some careful investigation, Dr. Malone used our ultrasound to pinpoint the culprit: a sneaky foxtail (think of it like a sharp little splinter) that had worked its way under Roscoe's skin!

Foxtails are uncommon here in Michigan, but Roscoe had recently traveled and brought back this unwelcome souvenir. With a quick surgical procedure, we removed the foxtail and got this brave pup back on the path to feeling his best.

🦎❄️ Winter Weather and Reptile Health ❄️🦎

Did you know we see more sick reptiles during Michigan's cold, dry winters? Low temperatures and humidity can take a toll on your scaly friends, who need very specific environmental conditions to thrive.

Here's how you can help your reptile stay healthy this winter:
✔️ Temperature Zones: Use a reliable heat source to maintain proper basking and ambient temperatures in their enclosure
✔️ Humidity Levels: Monitor humidity with a hygrometer and mist as needed, especially in dry winter months
✔️ Enclosure Check: Make sure your reptile's habitat is draft-free and that heating and humidity equipment are working properly.

If your reptile is acting differently - less active, not eating, or showing respiratory issues - don't wait to see help! We're here to ensure your cold-blooded companions stay warm and healthy all season.

Avian Influenza in Cats: What You Need to Know 🐾

Recent reports have highlighted cases of avian influenza (bird flu) affecting domestic cats. While rare, this is an important reminder to stay informed and proactive about your pet's health.

Here's what you can do to minimize the risk:
✔️ Keep your cats indoors
✔️ Avoid feeding cats raw or undercooked poultry
✔️ Stay vigilant for symptoms like respiratory issues, lethargy, or decreased appetite. Contact us if you notice anything concerning.

Here's a link to an article with more information: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/animal-health-and-welfare/animal-health/avian-influenza/avian-influenza-h5n1-cats #:~:text=Since%20the%20U.S.%20outbreak%20of,%2C%20leopards%2C%20and%20bobcats).

Together, we can keep our pets safe and healthy! ❤️

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats).

📢 Important Update on Librela for Osteoarthritis in Dogs 🐾

The FDA recently issued a report on Librela, a medication used to manage osteoarthritis pain in dogs. While it's true that every medication has potential side effects, it's important to note that the documented side effects of Librela are rare.

As veterinarians, we closely monitor these reports to ensure the safety of our furry patients. The benefits of Librela for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis pain outweigh the known risks. In fact, Dr. Malone has seen many patients benefit from this additional pain relief and even uses it for her own dog.

If you have any concerns or notice any unusual symptoms in your dog, please don't hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian. We're here to help and ensure the well-being of your beloved pets.
