This is truth 💯. Rescues are full so be very cautious finding your horse a forever home. It’s all so scary and sad what some people do to these sweet, majestic creatures 💔

Keeping your horse is the kindest thing you can do provided you can care for him or her adequately

Rescues are full and not all rescues are responsible rescues so finding a local home, where you can check in your horse, is the best possible solution if you fo have to rehome

Get a contract
Check their property and references
Check up on the horse

Finances and health may mean a horse needs to be rehomed, but it can be done in a way that’s ok for the horse

But verify!

If you don’t personally know the person, you don’t have mutual friends that can verify it’s a good home- that’s on us to do the checking

Because someone seems nice online does not mean they are legit.

It’s a hard thing to rehome. It’s often pretty scary. But if you have to do it- take steps that help keep your horse safe

Picture of two horses having a nap. They lay down because they feel safe

Make sure your horse goes to a home w a buddy. Change is just so hard in a horse. A friend makes it easier for them to adjust.

🐴Rescue life is not an easy job, but thankfully most rescues work together to find the best possible solution. It takes a village and I am very thankful for mine.

I got a call 2 weeks ago from an elderly woman who needed to rehome her daughters horse that she had rescued less than a year ago. I began to ask questions about the horse and why he needed to be rehomed. She said the horses previous owners had neglected to care for the horse and provide a safe environment for him to live. Her daughter was able to convince the previous owners to give her the horse. Her daughter has been working to improve his health and weight since this sweet boy has been in her possession.

My question to this lady is, so why do you need to rehome this horse? She immediately started crying.

She said she is in a wheelchair and it’s hard for her to even get up to the horse to do anything with him and her Daughter had to move because of a horrible tragedy. She proceeded to tell me that the hurricane that just came through, and I said hurricane Milton? She said yes, it flooded their property and her 5 year old grandson accidentally fell in a ditch and drowned right after the storm went through. Now we are both hysterically crying together. I immediately lost it because my youngest son is 5 and I cannot even imagine what these people are going through.

We both pulled ourselves together and she told me her daughter can’t be here anymore. She can’t eat or sleep and is so depressed. They just want what’s best for the horse and that is to find him a new home.

I told her I would do everything in my power to help her but I needed a week or two. I thought about it for a few days and how I could help these people. There is no way I could bring him here. We are so overfull!! So I reached out to one of my good friends and fellow rescuer, told her the story, and she said she would take him!! I was so excited I called my husband crying and saying “Karie said she’d take Spirit!!! “
He was happy too!! 🙏🥰

Today was a special day for this sweet boy they named SPIRIT!!! We picked him up and took him an hour south to The Liberty Barn where he will continue his rehabilitation and healing journey!! I am so thankful for Karie and The Liberty Barn!! I am so grateful she is a part of our village!

We were told Spirit is about 3 years old. He is still intact, so needs to be gelded, and needs an annual check up! (Shots and coggins)♥️ And lots of groceries.

If you’d like to help with this sweet boy’s journey or with anything he might need, please contact Karie VanderWerf at The Liberty Barn!
Anything helps and remember it is a tax write off. Also please share!! 🐴

And a big shout out to Julie Wilkinson-Hochard for loaning me her horse trailer while mine is being used for hay right now 🤷🏻‍♀️
