IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

We were notified by the Washington County Department of Health that a raccoon that was captured in the Blind Buck Road area of Salem, NY last week tested positive for rabies.

Please make sure your animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations and be vigilant for other animals acting abnormally, nocturnal animals being out during the day, losing their fear of humans, etc.

Rabies can present with a variety of neurologic symptoms, similar to other illnesses.

Washington County Public Health received seasonal flu vaccine for farm workers who could be exposed to the H5N1 avian influenza or “bird flu” strain.

An H5N1 avian flu outbreak was detected in dairy cattle in the U.S. in March 2024.

The seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against H5N1, but may prevent farm workers from becoming sick with seasonal flu and H5N1 at the same time.

If you are a Washington County farm operator who would like to set up a flu clinic, contact Washington County Public Health: 518-746-2400 [email protected]

*Important announcement for equine clients*

There have been numerous positive cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in New York in the last week, including one in Washington County. EEE presents as neurologic symptoms, is transmitted by mosquitoes, and can be fatal.

If your horse has not been vaccinated against EEE in the last 12 months we strongly encourage you to have that done as soon as possible.

Neurologic symptoms include fever, stiff neck, lack of energy, behavior changes such as aggressiveness, circling, or hyperexcitability, impaired vision, muscle twitches, inability to swallow, paralysis, and convulsions.

As the first half of 2024 comes to an end, we'd like to take a moment to thank our clients for giving us the opportunity to do what we love - keeping your animals happy and healthy! As we transition out of our busiest time of year we have some new and exciting changes to announce.

We'll be adjusting our office hours beginning next Monday, July 1st. Monday through Thursday the office will be open from 8 am to 4 pm, and on Fridays we'll be open from 8 am to 1 pm. We will still have veterinarians working all day on Fridays, and our answering service will be taking calls (non-urgent calls will be held for the office to handle on Mondays). The office will be closed next Thursday, July 4th, for the holiday, with one vet on call all day.

We are extremely excited to welcome our new associate veterinarian, Dr. Jessica Jasenski, to the team! Be on the lookout for an introductory post after she gets a little more settled.

Finally, don't forget to get on the calendar before fair season starts. We are keeping up to date on new health requirements and will do our best to keep you as informed as possible.

New Year - New Personnel

We are sorry to see Dr. Sarah Jensen leave Granville Veterinary Service to pursue other interests but we are grateful for her years of dedication and service, and wish her the very best in her future endeavors.

To keep Granville Veterinary Service running at full speed we welcome the return of Dr. Rick Bartholomew. Dr. Rick began his veterinary career with GVS thirty years ago - fresh out of the University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine. After working with GVS for three to five years, he and his wife, Dr. Amy Bartholomew, ventured to northern Vermont and established a very successful, multi-doctor large animal practice in Enosburg Falls. Dr. Rick and Dr. Amy recently "retired", sold their practice and returned to Benson, VT to pursue some retirement enterprises.

We are ecstatic that Dr. Rick has made the time to rejoin GVS. He brings the skills and experience that thirty plus years provides, caring for cattle, horses, small ruminants, and camelids. We are very fortunate that his interests and experience dovetail beautifully with the GVS service offerings and client/patient population.

Stay tuned for an updated website with more details about our staff and our veterinary services.

In the meantime, Dr. Karalyn Lonngren and Dr. John McDermott are pumped to have Dr. Rick Bartholomew join the GVS crew and look forward to an exciting spring!

A note from Dr. Sarah....

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for all the amazing memories I will carry with me as I prepare to depart from Granville Veterinary Service at the end of the year. It has been wonderful getting to know you and your animals. I'm honored that you have allowed me to be a part of your lives for so many years. I consider many of you part of my extended family and I know that our relationships will continue even though our interactions will serve a different purpose, and for that I am eternally grateful.

As I prepare to focus on a different chapter of my life, please know that you all will not be far from my thought.

Have a Happy Holidays and may the New Year bring you only good things.

Sincerely, Dr. Sarah
