I keep forgetting to post this. I have a past customer who has gotten two retired breeding pairs and a couple babies from me as well as a couple rescues elsewhere. She was super patient and didn't have expectations of getting them into one colony, but just slowly kept at it. Now she has a colony of 10! They are in a huge cage that she is adding more additions onto. Introductions don't always work, but with enough time and patience, MOST gliders will accept others.

I often get asked about my sugar glider cleaning schedule. This is what we do. It does not mean this is the only way to do it, but I thought it might be helpful for those wanting to make sure they are cleaning enough, but not overcleaning (which can make gliders smell worse).

Daily:
--sweep and swiffer floors in glider rooms
--remove food bowls and uneaten fruits and veggies from cage floor

Weekly:
--replace fleece sleep pouches
--disinfect drop trays and replace the packing paper liner (if your cage is in your main living space, or you live in an area with a lot of humidity, or if you have fruit flies then you might want to do this more than once a week)
--spritz cage and wheel with diluted chlorahexadine

Bi-weekly:
--soak water bottles in hot water with a little chlorahexadine (if you use silos or bowls, you will need to clean more frequently)

Rotation:
One item done each week, rotating so that they still have items that smell like them in their cage at all times.
--Week 1--clean and switch out all toys
--Week 2--clean and switch out fleece pieces (hammocks, vines, etc.) This rotation, we also remove and wash the shower curtains we have around the cages, wipe down the outside of cages, and sweep and steam mop under cages.
--Week 3--clean cage bars and wheel (during this time, we remove particularly dirty floor grates and wheels to soak/clean in the bathtub). *It takes us two weeks to get all cages and wheels done, but if you just have one cage, you could do cage bars on week 3 and wheel on week 4.
If you have easy access to taking your cage outside a couple times a year, cleaning it with a power washer or hose is very effective as well.

Cleaners we use: chlorahexadine, F10 Veterinary Cleaner, Odoban, dawn dish soap, scent free baby wipes

We also have air purifiers in each of our glider rooms. This helps with air quality and helps to keep the smell down. So if smell is a concern, I highly recommend getting one.

I also recommend having hand sanitizer or something similar to use before and after interacting with your gliders to minimize spreading germs!
