I was picking out some adults to start a new red wiggler breeding bin and I saw a clear blob on one of them. I picked it up and it started dropping the cocoon! It was so cool to see this happen in my hand. Wish my phone had been closer to take a video. At least I got a photo as soon as it slipped off!
They start out very milky white with a tiny hint of yellow before turning to a bright yellow then dark, almost burgundy, before hatching.
Worms are so cool!
Do you need some red wigglers to start your own worm bin? How about some castings to get those seeds off to a great start? Now’s the time to get your castings! Local pickup only for orders over 1 gallon. Shipping now available for 1/2 and 1 gallon sizes!

Yesterday I was reading a post on the Worm People forum. There’s a guy who sells lots of cocoons. Cocoons are a pain to count by hand so he uses a light box to help him see them. I made one real quick and was able to pull 250+ cocoons in under an hour! It took me over 3hrs to pull the same number last week!
I used an under the bed storage tote that used to be a worm bin and now holds paper grocery bags I use as bin covers. It’s one of those 2 in 1 items that I love so much. Space is at a premium here!

The white paper is some freezer paper taped on, foil on the lid (bottom) and sides then a couple led tap lights. I plan to use plug in strip lights with a dimmer next time as these were so bright I had to add an extra layer of paper over them & the batteries died quickly.

Here’s the light box and some of the cocoons. They really showed up well with the light shining through them!

Oh my, how time just runs away from me! So much for weekly posts!

So here’s a nice clean ball of worms for your eye ball pleasure. These guys are their way to Nebraska to work for another soil lover.

Right now I have 2lbs of pure reds (aka Eisenia Fetida) left that are ready to sell (can be shipped) and 6 starter cultures for local pick up. There are 3lbs of European Nightcrawlers (Eisenia Hortensis) ready to go too and a few more will be ready in another couple weeks! Only 1 starter of those left for local pickup.

The rest of the week I’ll be focused on new breeder bins to reach the new goal of 8lbs of pure Eisenia Fetida (reds) a week! Eventually I’d like to get that to 12.5lbs a week (or 50lbs a month), but figure it’s best to start smaller. Thats a lot of worms, especially when I’m also trying to maintain 5lbs of Eisenia Hortensis (Euros) a week!

Hopefully I’ll find time to get my website up and running by March. With all these mouths to feed, a family that needs clean clothes (and attention) once in a while, a dog who’s got so much energy it blows my mind, along with a couple easy going rabbits that would rather I feed them and leave them be, making time for the web site has been difficult to say the least! Although I do have a couple blog posts ready to go along with a few rough drafts. So at least once the site is built content will be ready to go for you all!

For those who are curious all of these worms are raised indoors. The reds live in a 9x10 ex-sewing room on the main floor and the Euros live in a 6x9 room in our basement. I also have mixed composting worms in a corner of the basement, far away from the Euros so there will be no cross contamination. I recently shipped out 7lbs of the mixed species so I’m completely out of those guys for now.

It’s funny how many people I communicate with on various forums who think I have a major operation going on, so I felt like it might not be a bad idea to put that information out there. I comment a ton on Worm People forum and do what I can to help others. Much of what I’ve learned has been through experimentation, something I’d like to do more of soon! I also like reading various scientific papers, both peer reviewed and not.

I’d love to have the space to expand, but the house is only so big. Maybe one day, God willing, we will move to a place with a large outbuilding where the worm population can really boom!

Thats it for now. Please send me an email or text if you’re interested in purchasing the last of the available Reds or Euros. Pure Eisenia Fetida (red wiggler) $40/lb + shipping. Eisenia Hortensis (Euro) $55/lb + shipping.

Feel free to ask questions or make suggestions for new content. I’ll do my best to answer questions quickly and even post them for others who might have the same ones.

Happy New Year! Yes, I’m a bit late. It’s been crazy busy feeding worms and shipping a few orders. I’m always amazed by the amount of food these little things can eat!
I’m officially out of pounds of red worms to ship, but will have more come mid to late February.
European Nightcrawlers are still available for shipping at $40 for 1/2 lb or $50 for a full pound, including shipping in the continental US.
Starter cultures of pure reds and pure Euros are still available for local pick up! Pure reds $40 & Pure Euros $45. Shipping will be available when the weather warms up for the starters since they are shipped damp and won’t ship well when it’s as cold as it is here. The worms and microbes need some moisture to arrive in their peak condition!
I do hope you all had an amazing New Year’s and the year to come is full of a bountiful harvest, in life and in the garden!
Thanks for following along. Next week I’ll be posting about starting a worm bin using a starter culture and a single 10 gallon Rubbermaid tote. I’ve found there’s no reason to stack bins as long as the worms have plenty of air via several air holes or even just by removing the lid or propping it open a bit. It has definitely made things easier keeping a single bin vs several layers. It’s also a money saver!

From coffee cup to a piece of plastic in the blink of an eye!
The cup was filled with some wet horse manure, coffee grounds, pumpkin puree and newspaper shreds. It took these little guys about a week to eat through the stuff inside and another week to get through the paper part of the cup.
Worms are so fun!

Why wait until Spring to start composting with worms? Winter is a great time to get your worm bin going, growing and thriving in order to have those wonderful castings by spring!

Seriously Worms is currently offering a winter sale for those who want to get started early. Worm castings aren’t just for your outdoor garden, they work amazingly well for houseplants too!

Current Sale ends Jan 20th, or when supplies run out so get your worms today and start turning your waste into a wonderful soil amendment! Feed the soil, not the landfill!

Pure Red Wiggler Starter Culture: Reg $45, Sale Price $40
Mixed Specie Starter Culture: Reg $45, Sale Price $40
Pure European Nightcrawler Starter Culture: Reg $50, Sale Price $45

There is only a limited number of each in stock so don’t wait too long or they may run out!

Worm starter cultures have become 2.25lbs in just under 70 days, during testing, when placed in a 10 gallon Rubbermaid tote and given plenty of bedding, food, balanced moisture and a nice warm spot, maybe under the kitchen sink or a spot in a closet!

Starter cultures have been given no less than 12 weeks to reproduce and turn the starting bedding and food into castings. You not only get the worms but you also get the castings and any unfinished bedding. This allows the worms to adjust quickly so there’s no need for adding a light above them like you might need when buying pounds of worms in sterile bedding. The worms arrive hungry and ready to start eating your waste so you’ll have casting by spring if they are kept between 68-75F, have good moisture, aeration and plenty of food!

Your new worms will also come with my booklet that includes information on feeding, best bin types, troubleshooting and lots more. The current edition is 11 full pages of text and updates will be available for free upon request. I also offer help to those who may have questions or concerns regarding the worms or castings. I’m just a text or email away! For urgent questions text to arrange a phone call or video chat, I can usually squeeze these in the same day or the following.
