Smidget is a 6 year old chihuahua who was rescued by the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby in Memphis, Tennessee in January of 2013. Smidge underwent an emergency C-section but, unfortunately, her puppies were underdeveloped and she had no milk, so her puppies did not survive. In fact, Smidget herself almost did not survive. Her wonderful foster mom, Whitney, nursed her back to health. They als
o discovered that Smidget was heartworm (HW) positive with a very heavy worm load. Knowing that her odds of being adopted in the local Memphis area were slim, Whitney arranged to have Smidget taken in by Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS) in Kanab, Utah and in April of 2013, Whitney drove Smidget to Utah. Smidget underwent HW treatment and waited for her new forever family. I visited BFAS in October of 2013 and immediately fell in love with Smidgey when I first laid eyes on her. She was reserved and shy, but tiny and adorable. And I had to have her! Smidget had her last HW treatment and another HW test which came up negative. On October 18, 2013, Smidget took the long flight home to Wisconsin and became a part of our family. And life hasn't been the same ever since. Unfortunately at her 6 month retest in April, 2014, Smidget once again tested positive for HW. So in mid-April she began her second course of HW treatment. It's bad enough she had to go through this awful treatment one time, but it's worse that she's now having to undergo treatment again. She's the reason behind why I started this page - to help spread awareness of HW and HW prevention.
